I am just wondering..... NBC pays big $$$ for the rights to broadcast every Norte Dame game on national TV. Are there that many Norte Dame fans across North America? Or is it the Toronto Maple Leaf effect.

The Toronto Maple Leaf effect can be discribed as the following. The eastern Canadian media broadcast Toronto Maple Leaf games & get very good ratings in Ontario. So, in their infinite wisdom, they conclude that all of Canada must also love to follow the leafs. So if there is a Toronto Maple Leaf game being played on a particular night that has the slighest possible playoff implication, all other hockey games are bumped off TV in order to broadcast the Toronto Maple Leaf game across all of Canada. Western Canada does not care about the Toronto Maple Leafs. We have our own hockey teams.

So, is Norte Dame really that popular that millions will tune in every week to watch them play in TV?.... or is it the Toronto Maple Leaf effect.
(Eastern New York media get very good regional ratings & figure the rest of the country must also follow suit.)

You'll find equal numbers of leafs and habs fans in eastern Canada.

It's two completely different sports.

ND has fans/alumni all over the nation, and NBC does get a good rating from the games.

And, college football is HUGE, and is a great sport. Seeing young guys play their hearts out, and not getting paid, is a great thing to see. It's dedication, not salary.

Not getting paid my ass. How many players aren't there on a football scholarship? Not to mucking fany I bet. Getting a free ride into uni based on being able to toss a ball is getting paid.

Since Penn State and Notre Dame have the highest ratios of alumni, does anyone know that the ratings were for yesterdays game?

hard for me to say. my brother went to ND, as did my uncle- and i'm from a big Irish family where everyone sends emails back and forth, multiple times a day, analyzing the previous games and making predctions for the next ones.

Only time I watch Notre Dame is when Michigan plays them

NBC broadcasts ND football because it is a Catholic School- and almost all Catholics root for ND.

What the hell does Catholicism have to do with NBC showing Notre Dame football?

Notre Dame is just that popular, plus remember that they are an Independent so you don't have to worry about conference games.

Except for fans of Boston College (another Catholic school who happens to be one of Notre Dame's RIVALS)

When it comes to college ball, I watch one team and one team only. :word:

I love Notre Dame football. Except on October 17 I hope my Bruins beat the hell out of them.

Hey Addendum,

I'm picking Michigan to win this year's national title.

I'm a diehard State fan, and am picking my most-hated rival to win this year!

That won't happen.

If anything, it will be a hard-fought game. If ND wins, it will be a blowout. If UCLA wins, it will definitely be earned.

Thanks, although they probably won't. Michigan is around #11-#13 in the rankings. I doubt that they'll get in the running for the title.

Though I am hoping for those damned buckeyes to lose their #1 ranking:woot:

Eh, I know on paper Notre Dame looks awesome but I don't know. By then we should work out the kinks against teams like Washington and Oregon as good road tests. Also, by then Notre Dame will be full of their own success and the Heismania that is Brady Quinn. Hopefully they'll pull a Willingham and take their dive early.
Though, ND does get a bye the week before they play us (how convinient.)

Yeah... if you were born in Michigan, you were automatically born to hate OSU.

I scored tix to that MSU/OSU game at East Lansing... it's a 2 hour drive, but it's totally worth it! I can't wait to tailgate and chill, hours before the game.

I'm counting on MSU to put up a fight against OSU. If Trannon can stay strong and connect with Stanton on passes, they can beat a lot of teams.

On the ND thing... looks can be deceiving. Everyone thought State would be crushed by them, but look who won, 44-41.
