I wonder what happened to the Neil Gaiman script Del Toro was meant to direct?
Imagine if that trifecta was still possible?

I'd be ok with Depp. Given the reversal of fortunes in the last 10 years where before he would have been too big a name and too costly to go after for upstart Marvel Studios, now MS is the giant on the block and Depp's in need of some career rehabilitation. I doubt he'd cost Pirate's/Alice in Wonderland/Lone Ranger salary type of money. He needs Marvel more than they need him at this point. And they've got to be thinking about that transition point after TA3 when we don't likely have RDJ to be the main(super star) face of the MCU.

Anyway, he's not the top of my list for the role but he's not even close to the bottom either. He's an undeniable talent and could do a great job. I just hope for no Vebinski(he tends to go over budget and frugal MS wouldn't be having any of that anyway) and probably no Burton(though to be honest, a restrained Tim Burton might fit the character/mythos like a glove). Maybe get Neil Burger or another solid craftsman-like director to do it.

So now it's looking like Disney isn't having talks with Depp? Shame, I think he would've been great

Depp could do fine in the role, no doubt in my mind.

Here are some others I could see as well...

Benedict Cumberbatch (not too inspired, but still a good fit)

    Casey Affleck

Matthe McConaughey (I don't know how likely it is he'd do a comic film, but his career has been very interesting lately)

Johnny Depp being Dr. Strange would be the one of the only few times I'd actually be excited to see a Depp movie!

JGL as Strange would be indeed strange.

I remember someone suggesting Cumberbatch for Strange and Bryan Cranston for Dormammu, as the general public would go wild to see the two actors go head to head, and I gotta say...

    I'd totally be among them.

I think the final verdict between all these sites is that he did meet with the studio like the original claims said, just that it was awhile back and went nowhere. So not in as of now.

Yeah, sounds like LR was printing way outdated information.

But it at least confirms that Marvel has Strange in development for 2016, as most of us already suspected.

Hmmm Casey Affleck. Hypothetically speaking, if he was chosen for role, would there be an internet breakdown in similarity to the announcement of his brother being chosen for Batman?

    NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! :jedi

He's my choice for Lex Luthor. :oldrazz:

Now, I can certainly get behind that. He would knock it out of the park.

I may be in the minority but i'd like to see Strange as an older character than any of the Avengers.

    Say mid 50's or so

I'm right there with ya, but folks around these parts apparently don't like old people in their superhero movies. And it'd be tough to find an Avenger older than 70-year old Hank Pym (Michael Douglas).

Bit of a generalisation there, Sam. I for one think the casting of Douglas as Pym is fantastic, and I know that I'm not alone as ive read so on the relevant threads.i

As for Strange, sure, theres nothing wrong with casting an older actor, if thats were theyre going with it. My recollection is that Strange was late to mid thirties when he had his car crash, so its only natural to assume thaf the actor cast will be there or there abouts. Unless they go older, have a Strange that studied for decades and do the origin in flashback (similiar to the movie adaption of the Shadow). As I said, nothing wrong with either approach.

I think it just depends on the character. Strange alway came across as an older gent to me. Pym as a mid-thirties guy, Rand as a mid/late twenties.

Aside from Fury there isn't many old 'heroes' in the MCU or young heroes, the youngest is probably 29 or something.

One thing i like about the XCU is there is Teenage heroes, some as Adults and some as old-age characters.

OH GOD OH GOD DYING AT THIS!!!

I *need* Jon Hamm to be true, or the (supposed) runner up, Timothy Olyphant!!

GOD YES PLEASE SEAL THE DEAL, MARVEL!!

This seems way more in-line with how Marvel casts their movies too, so I'm super duper down with this business.

All this news on who is going to play Dr. Strange is a bit premature. The movie hasn't been announced yet and probably won't be until after Cap 2 is released.

I too have always looked at Strange as an older gent, thus my frequent suggesting of Liam Neeson. They could go a bit younger I guess but personally he'd feel weird to me if he weren't at least in his early 40's or so.
