Does an MU: Civil War film adaptation work without Spider-Man? Or work at all?

So by now I’m sure everyone has read the IGN supposition that Marvel could be angling for a Civil War type storyline somewhere down the road.
In the comics a MAJOR player in that story is Spider-Man and the revealing of his Peter Parker secret identity. In the story he was allied with the Pro-Registration side initially and exposed himself (snicker snicker) to show that he supported the initiative.

I feel this element of the story in the comics was HUGE and necessary to drive the story. Without a similar element what would motivate viewers and other heroes to side with Pro-Registration forces over Thor and Cap?

Will the story have the same gravity if there is no Spider-Man or character like Spider-Man that sacrifices his right to privacy for the greater good? If it is necessary to the story which character could serve the same function?

It also got me to thinking that not a lot of characters introduced in the cinematic MU have secret identities. Since that is a driving factor behind registration/non-registration, how does this storyline at all?

I don't think a Civil War works on the big screen, with or without Spidey, because there just aren't enough superheroes available in MCU to make it happen. Besides, I don't think Civil War is such a great story that Marvel is mandatory to adapt it for the sequel for The Avengers.

It's way to soon for CW, with or without Spidey it won't work.

If MUA2 couldn't even put together a decent video game about CW, I seriously doubt you could get Marvel, Fox and Sony studios to put their heads together to come up with a film (series) about it.

I *do,* however, think Marvel Animated should tackle the story arc in a DVD.

It's too soon for a Civil War...There's less than 10 superheroes in the MCU right now that's no Civil War that's a street fight.

If they get the rights back for Fantastic Four and Daredeil I'd say go for it without Spidey.

Make it the third Avengers movie which won't be due until 2017 or 2018.

I rather avoid Civil War altogether.I mean there is the infinity gaunlet, Kree/Skrull and several other epic stories to pull from.Civil War shouldn't even be considered.

Civil War is more a Marvel Animation project imo.

If Marvel gets FF rights back I can see Dr. Doom show up in The Avengers' sequel as well.

I'd love to see Civil War done as a two part movie. But they need to get the rights to more characters back. Mainly Spidey and FF.

Dramatically it would be better to bring them altogether for Secret Wars before you turn them against each other in Civil War.

:ff: :ff: :ff:

Spidey and FF need to come back to Marvel, that's priority number one.

Well yeah...

Then I want a Power Man and Iron Fist TV Show set in the 70's.

:D

RDJ won't be happy if Iron Man is turned into a bad guy.

I think RDJ would enjoy the challenge. Especially since IM wouldn't be a straight up bad guy. The Civil War actually made Stark a more interesting character.

You got it wrong. RDJ made Stark an interesting character, Civil War made Stark a contemptible character that rebounds after the movie.

I think for the sake of both characters, they should keep away from the in-hero conflict. Especially when the competition thrives in heroic harmony. At least modify the script altogether without Stark cloning Thor and interdimensional gulag thing. Civil War was Stark low point, 2008 is Stark high point never forget that.

I disagree Chief. Stark has always been interesting and RDJ captured all the characters best (and worst) qualities. The Civil War story provided extra depth as to what the character is a capable of doing for what he believes is necessary. Conflict is what creates a good story and sometimes you need to hit bottom before you can grow and move on. Never forget that.

Civil War is not an even-handed stories. It may tarnish mainstream perception of some heroes and when the opposition is still doing great with their goody, almost perfect heroes (including Batman who has a high moral discipline) especially in their comic line, that's not good.

People might like flawed characters, but not as flawed given out in Civil War done to Iron Man and Mr Fantastic. Simply there's a threshold of how much damaged can the character be before viewer said enough. In Mainstream movies, that threshold should be lower with kids and moral-minded parents watching.

How can we do Civil War?

We don't have access to Spider-Man, Fantastic Four or the X-Men.
Is the New Warriors owned by Disney?
I know Nitro is owned by FOX.
Not to mention we can't use 1/2 of Thunderbolts.

To get Civil War actually believable at least 1-2 superheroes have to be debuted on the next Marvel Studios films and on the TV shows at least 4-5.

Just make it an animated feature.

I agree with an earlier poster: I'd rather see a "Secret Wars", where you get as many superheroes as you can (or you have the rights too), and battle the omnipotant Beyonder. I don't see anything like this happening, however, till they develop more characters, so we're looking at the latter part of this decade.

just playing along with the thread question, in a hypothetical sense. if marvel did want to make it i personally don't think spidey is integral to civil war. it is cap and iron man who would be the focal points. the only one i would miss is reed and his negative zone prison, but pym could replace him if they don't have reed at that time.

sure spidey was around but he was stark's sidekick in all of this. he could easily be replaced with another hero who steps forward and reveals himself. this is the hypothetical part i was mentioning. lets say we have a larger MCU. maybe it would be more impactful if the person who reveals himself is a world leader that people know of, like black panther for example.

i know wakanda was neutral but without the x-men with mcu t'challa won't be having a wedding with storm. so he would just be a former avenger who chose a side. would be benificial from a political stand point for him to side with the US government instead of some "rebels". just to keep his people in good standing with the US, not out of fear mind you, just playing the game of politics.

No, that series all but destroyed my intrest in Marvel. Unless the USA cable network revives USA Up All Night, I will never watch a Marvel Civil War movie.

I liked Civil War, but I feel like there are just much better stories to tell. I also don't feel like they ever need to try to do a live-action movie of THAT scale, as far as how many characters there are and all that. Think of how X-Men the Last Stand and Wolverine felt, with so many characters just shoehorned in. There is no way they could build up enough tension to make it work. Also, as said before, the heroes of the Marvel movie universe don't seem so concerned about secret identities.
