Does Batman follow a "Straight Edge" lifestyle?

Hey everyone,

I was just curious.....but does Batman/Bruce Wayne follow a "Straight Edge" lifestyle ( abstaining from alchohol, smoking, and drugs )?

It is my understanding that Batman does not drink as it would "interfere" with his work, and even as Bruce, he'll just pretend to drink at social events.

Has it ever been established that Bruce also doesn't smoke or use drugs ( be it recreational or performance enhancing )?

as a teetotaler (one who does not drink) as well as one who does not smoke or do drugs (i guess you could say i'm straightedge), i always thought it was bad-ass that my favorite comic character (and probably in general) is like me in that regard. although he probably abstains for different reasons, such as what TDK4ever said him not wanting it to interfere with work whereas i abstain b/c i don't want to intoxicate myself, i still think it's cool.

i love the scene in TDK where he takes the glass of the champagne and then tosses the poison of the roof!

Bruce drinks alcohol especially at his parties but not alot and he does not smoke. He has to stay healthy to be Batman. And yes i'm sure he had sex just one night stands and alot of them.

Straight Edge is a very ridiculous trend.

But it does make sense for Wayne...I mean, he did toss his drink at Dent's fundraiser, plus staying away from sex would be like staying away from sex before a big fight or football game.

^^^it's not a trend. maybe the term is, but i think at least that is like 20 years old at least. but people all through history have chosen to abstain from these activities.

and, as far as sex, i think it's clear in the comics (at least the older ones) and movies (B89) that bruce has sex.

EDIT: sorry, i mistook trend for fad. but, anyway, i don't think it's ridiculous, but admirable. now, some of the extremes it is taken to is ridiculous, but as a belief system (and being one that i agree with for the most part), i think it is something that should be considered by all.

i dont do drugs or drink, but i wouldnt call myself "straight edge" because its not some conscious effort, nor at i trying to make a statement about anything. drinking and drugs is just something i never got into. nor am i against such vices. i would think for one to label themselves straight edge would require them to be making some outward statement about purity and whatever crap.

as for batman, im sure he's not against drinking, in fact im sure he drinks at social events, responsibly. im sure he's experimented with particular drugs in the effort the train his body against them. but, obviously, he's not a user. but the reason batman wouldnt engage in recreational practice of substance and spirits is simply for the reasons of health, common sense, and not wanting to compromise his mission. and not for the reasons of some self righteous statement that comes with the straight edge label.

Any idea of self-restraint is totally foreign in our society but philosophically many purpose-driven people like monks and even prizefighters during training were abstinent.

Other superheroes are sexually active. For example Spiderman definitely has sex and Jean Grey is a big old ****e. There always been a very strong undercurrent of sex/sexual desire with Superman and several women, including LL and WW. But even for sexually explicit writers such as Frank Miller have understood that Batman 1)is too obsessive about his training to have time for women 2)cannot emotionally form the attachments to women for sex 3)might actually have some sort of psycho-sociological barriers such as longterm depression that precludes the desire/gratification for sex.

I've never heard of straight edge lifestyle but from I infer yes batman does live that life, and it's similarly due to adherence to a higher philosophical/moral purpose that motivates that behavior

Batman definitely did not "get down on catwoman." There have been writers (for the TV show for example) who basically didn't get Batman and there's an element of sexual tension on the old Adam West serial. But unlike Superman and his female counterparts (LL, LL, WW etc) where the attraction is reciprocal and consistent, with canonical Batman there's a traditional understanding that while Batman is an object of lust for Catwoman, it's not strongly reciprocated.

The 14 year olds in you will post that it's because Catwoman is "evil" therefore Batman cant get with her but that's not the motivation. First of all, there's no prohibition in comics of a hero hooking up with an antihero... among superhero couplings, it's almost as common for a hero to get with an anithero as with a hero... Spidey/Black Cat etc. If you understand anything about Batman, it has to do with his emotional detachment and the transference of his PRIVATE feelings and emotional connections only being able to be expressed in a GENERAL love/emotional attachment to Gotham City as a surrogate... ergo his obsession with saving Gotham.

This is not only with Catwoman. Even with Dick Grayson there's a strong undercurrent/conflict of Batman not being "checked in" in his emotional dealings. Or even his dealings with his most trusted partner Superman... whose relationship is portrayed as conflict almost as often as it is partnership. the man simply cannot form normal emotional attachments nor express it in day to day life. he's certainly not going to express it sexually

and to Capt Picard above me... you make not like it but clearly Batman's tradition of pedastry in the comics leaves open the analogy to Sparta. it doesn't mean he is definitely gay but logically it leaves the door open. keep in mind that before the 20th century the idea of being "gay" as we know it didn't exist. Spartan dudes had wives and heirs and regular lives and packing fudge was just something they did sometimes it didn't "define" them. IMHO Batman is not actually gay... he's ascetic and it's possible that his development ******ed and his sexuality never concretely developed (the only thing he can "love" is Gothan). But be mature. as for sex it's obvious. for all the reasons above Batman isn't going to have sex as a means to express emotional connections. The only other reason is for pleasure. watch Batman Unmasked: The Psychology of The Dark Knight,in a segment, it tells how much batman wants to be with catwoman, but simply cannot.

Batman + Gay = NO. i dont have a problem against gay people, as a Mof, my friend austin is.but batman is not gay. and if he is, i guess that means joker's gay too, cause joker is the yin to his yang. once again : :facepalm
