Of all the major criticism I have seen with this movie, one constant point is how weak the villains are. Is that a fair criticism?

Not at all. I loved Hector (very creepy) and Parallax was awesome. Underused? Yes. Weak? No.

I thought that the villains were terrible. Hated Hector Hammond and Parallax is just a stupid CGI cloud with a face in it.

I liked them.

Parallax was pretty cool, but I would have liked to see his more...yellowish bug form.

Hector was a (at first) character I felt a bit bad for, a pushover, possibly a bit of a creepass (I dunno, thanks for cutting out alot of footage...if it exists.) but still sucks to be him. Once he got his powers, he was a class a *****ebag.

I'd say they are bad and lame villains but the movie did a great job with them and HH had a "Joker pencil" moment that made me and my theater go WOW!

The villains were serviceable, nothing special. They could've done more with Hector, or gotten rid of him completely and find another secondary challenge.

Hector Hammond is possibly the worst villian in comic book movies that I've ever seen. After the performances that Hiddleston gave in Thor and Fassbender and Bacon gave in XFC, this was an embarassment.

I don't blame Sarsgaard at all, it was just poor writing. We're not given any background other than Hal Carol and Hector all grew up together and we're supposed to fill in the blanks, while they waste screen time for Hal's brother and Nephew, who are never to be seen again in the film.

I loved Hector. He could have been fleshed out a bit more, but Peter did a fantastic job. Very creepy guy.

How does Hector Hammond compare to other comic book villains in movies? Does he measure up to his counterparts in other movies?

My opinion isn't very popular, but I think he's one of the most interesting and well acted villains in a long time.

Hector > Loki.

Hector reminded me of how The Elephant Man looked, kinda cheesy too. I liked Parallax quite a bit though.

I disagree. The prosthetics were absolutely perfect and very comic accurate.

The villains in this film sucked. Hector was 1 dimensional and whiny. I think the mirror Hal apsect they touched upon was a great idea, but they didn't do anything with it and completely underminded it with how that was paid off in the film. Parallax also wasn't intriguing. The design could have been more imaginitive, he was beat like a punk, and had little to no character.

It's a very fair criticism.

Paralax looked corny to me. The head looked like the aliens in Mars Attacks.

I think having a CGI villain was a bad decision for GL. IM got some complains about his villains being under the armor, but at least they are human. GL should've battled the evil yellow lantern corps or someone, not a blob of pixelized mess.

I did feel like something was missing with Hector... you're not quite sure what his relationship was to Hal and Carol previously. He clearly has a thing for Carol, but was there something more there? Was he a borderline stalker? Were they all really good friends once but had a falling out because Hal and Carol became too "cool" to hang with him? I don't know. What also didn't help in that regard was that he looked 10 years older than the two of them with the hairline and mustache.

Still, I thought Sarsgaard was good in the role. I think part of the problem with Hector Hammond is that while he's a good villain, he's not really a good villain visually. I think, if I were to attempt to write a GL origin film, I'd use Sinestro as the main villain and probably leave Hector out of it alogether, but that's just me.

As for Parallax, well, I thought he looked cool enough but when he spoke it just threw me off for some reason. I think it was worst in the intro scene where
the aliens are speaking whatever their langauge is and he awakens and speaks English. That just felt a bit cheesy.
I thought having him "speak" via a psychic connection would have worked better. But he certainly felt like a massive threat and that was essentially what he needed to be. Much cooler than Craptastic Four's version of Galactus, that's for damned sure.

Really? I actually thought he looked scary at one point. Overall, awesome design.

I know which moment you're taking about and my theater had the same reaction. That was awesome. :woot:

Parallax was terrible, but Hector Hammond had potential to be a tragic villain in the vein of Doc Ock—only if the writing wasn't so terrible.

I think the issue lies in that the villains were never that interesting anyway. Hector Hammond's always been something of a pushover villain in the comics, more of a cosmic joke than anything, and Parallax is just a fear entity who causes other people to do bad things or feeds on fear. The portrayal of both Hammond and Parallax in the film was terrifying and disturbing at points, even moreso than a number of other classic DC movie villains over the years, so I don't think they were bad villains, per se. They just weren't terribly interesting ones.

Right there with you (I happen to have a knack for unpopular opinions).

This is sort of the problem of starting Sinestro as a "good guy" it prevents us from seeing a stronger villain in the first movie when we really needed it.

Now I mean the franchise is sort of in jeopardy. We may not see a sequel.

Parallax was woeful. He somewhat reminded me of storm cloud Galactus in F4: ROTSS.

Hammond was ok. Nothing special or memorable.

The syringe to the forehead was nice to see, but that's about it.
