Fox Buys ‘League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen’ Adaptation As Put Pilot
By DOMINIC PATTEN

Captain Nemo could be coming to the small screen and he’s bringing some friends with him. FOX today gave a put pilot commitment to League of Extraordinary Gentleman. The one-hour drama is based on comic guru Alan Moore’s multi-volume series featuring Nemo, Allan Quatermain, Dracula’s Mina Hacker, the Invisible Man and Dr Jekyll/Mr. Hyde. The Victorian Era-based series from the Watchmen and V For Vendetta creator was first published in 1999 with subsequent volumes moving through time to the contemporary UK. Like with the 2009 Watchmen film, Moore is not involved in this project. Michael Green will serve as EP and showrunner for the 20th Century Fox TV produced project with Erin Stoff also executive producing. Today’s announcement is not only the studio’s first major drama sale at FBC this development season but comes just under a year after the Gotham creator inked an overall deal two-year deal with 20th TV for cable and broadcast projects in co-junction with Stoff. Of course this isn’t the first adaptation of Moore’s League. 20th Century Fox put out a feature adaptation in 2003 starring Sean Connery and Jason Flemyng among others. The tepid box office response killed off any plans for a franchise. Michael Green is repped by WME, 3 Arts and attorneys Patti Felker and Bruce Gellman.
Let us pray this shapes up better than the movie.

Peta Wilson was hot as a red head in that movie.

I'd be curious to see who they'd attach as director for the pilot, but that could be a ways off.

If it were on any other station I'd have no problem. This will probably be just as neutered as the movie.

Yeah, LoEG could make an incredible TV show... on HBO or Showtime. Even AMC.

But Fox? I'll cross my fingers but I ain't expecting a lot here...

They gave me five seasons of Fringe. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

It could work if they stick to just the idea and tone of the first volume. It was pretty much just a straight-forward adventure tale that happened to star a bunch of Victorian characters. It wasn't until the second volume when Moore started introducing the darker and more complex elements of the series. If they just stick to adventures, it's easily doable, and could be good, too.

This will probably be awful.

Always a beacon of positivity, Matt.

Thinking of a red headed Peta Wilson blinded me for second as I thought it read it was coming to FX. Not liking it's chances being on FOX.

Hmm, a new show on Fox about a woman leading a team consisting of some guys she doesn't know at first, each with unique and unusual abilities.

I hope the show ends up something like this:

I'm excited that this is getting another shot. Yet it being on Fox doesn't really inspire a whole lot of hope. The first volume didn't really have much extreme stuff other than Griffin raping the schoolgirls, which wasn't really needed in the first place. Honestly take all the rape out of Moore's writing and it's still fine. But I hope Quartermain's opium addiction stays.

Like Bonne said, the first volume really doesn't have a whole lot of extreme stuff that something like Fox would water down. But still, I'd feel a lot more confident if this were on HBO, Showtime or even FX. But maybe with some like The Following that's on now, they won't be so skittish when it comes to the more darker elements. Just stay true to the nature of it for God sakes. The material is amazing and should be stuck to whenever possible.

The comic is in my top five favorites of all time so I'm giving this a shot regardless.

Do we know if it would actually be on Fox, or is Fox just developing it for FX, perhaps?

I'm willing to give this a shot and as a person who never read much of Alan Moore's work I've liked most of it regardless of his feelings towards it.

Honestly I don't know what's people's deal with Fox as a network. I mean is it as simple as them cancelling/mistreatment of Firefly? They've cancelled a lot of good shows but at the same time they are the only ones willing to take a shot on them to begin with..

Not personally. It's just there's a couple reasons.

1) Budget being the most important right now. That's why it could be better suited for HBO. With those channels, you see the money going into it. Plus, a problem I see with period pieces is stuff like wardrobe. It looks like they were just made and slapped on the actors. Also, this will require a good amount of special effects. Namely Hyde.

2) How much they'll go in keeping with the material. It being on localized networks runs the risk of needing to appeal to everyone so it could be watered down. It'll be a TV-!4 anyway, but MA you can just go there without being afraid to, despite choosing to do what with the material.

I would absolutely love for this to work, but... I have serious doubts.

It would work better as a movie, not sure it's tv show material, but then again, Alan Moore only watches tv shows nowadays, seems like the only way they can make him watch an adaptation of his work.

As a cap for each episode they should have a 10 second clip of Alan Moore raging.

I actually think the opposite, I think the material is much better suited to a serialized medium than a two hour (at most) film.

Yeah, television is a much better fit than movies for the League. Moore won't watch it anyway; he's already said he doesn't watch adaptations of his work. And I think after the legal stuff that happened with the LOEG film would sour him from it, I'm sure.

I'm not sure, i allways found the structure of each one of his League book fiting to a movie, not to mention the special effects necessary for some of the stuff in these stories

The structure is, generally, a standalone tale across each volume. That much, you could say, fits a movie. But there's generally a lot of stuff happening, a lot of little details that inform the whole plot. A TV series would help fit that in much better.

The effects could be an issue, but if done well enough, you could do all of it on a TV budget. At least from the first volume. I don't think there was anything overly grand in that to try and adapt, outside the steam ships, I guess.

The only thing I really see as a cause for concern is whether a network would ever go for this kind of a period piece.

It's a long shot, definitely. It'd have to really impress execs to get the go ahead. The only real marketable character is J&H, too, so you've basically selling new characters, too.
