Rise of the Silver Surfer DR. DOOM/Julian McMahon Discussion

^ sounds very good to me. i dont mind the powers as it would take to long to explaing the him using magic.

No one (who has seen the movie) has picked up on how close to classic Doom , movie Doom has now become as a result of this sequel.

I will put some points for consideration in spoiler tags for those who wish to remain cinematically pure:cwink:
  • Doom has the classic scarred and burmed (or melted) face behind the mask and even has an underling use tools to remove it who he kills because he's being impatient.
  • He sits on a big throne watching several spy cam screens of global events
  • You see images of his ancestors and a quick glimpse of one in armour which explains why he chooses to wear it
  • Doom in fiinal costume is totally armoured and looks so much closer to the more traditional Doom appearance
But most importantly and most overlooked

  • Doom now is FREE of the organic metal skin, so in essence with the exception of electrical powers, he is a man in a armoured costume...WOW!!! They have totally retconned Doom and got rid of the Ultimate FF controversy
  • So can we all call a truce with Fox, we now have to a degree a Doom (which at least in looks and now as a lightly powered human) is closer to 616 than ever?

He is still not the original Doom

Scarred/Burned face is not the original Doom, he only had a slight scar, but still decided on a mask to cover it....as far as the rest, I would not go as far as to say it is a retcon, just alittle better than the first.....BUT if as a villian he's "bad ass", I'll forgive the other......I was willing to forgive the messing around with Doom the first time......but he wasn't even a good villain.....

^ it was the original doom. when he put the mask on is burnt him becuase it was stil hot, and he put it on in the first place to cover up a scar which what happened ( sort of ) in the film.

Hey, I'll take any improvement over "Marco, Polo":cwink: :yay:

I do want to commend Tim Story & Co. for one thing: We are less than 24 hours away from the U.S. debut of this film, and they've successfully managed to keep Dr. Doom's final armored look under wraps completely. Bravo!

Yeah, that's incredible. Great work FOX!

Yeah I am pretty damn impressed by Fox on that aspect...Doom's new look (other than the toy and those grainy leaked photos) is something I can't wait to see, no matter how long he is on the screen.

When its not shown in

1. one tv spot...
2. one trailer...
3. and is cgi, therefore set pictures do not show it...

Well I would hope they could keep it under wraps......lol

Yeah, but then Doom put the mask on his face while it was still hot, which resulted in him pretty much burning his face to crap.

It seems to me a bit odd to hang so tightly on this point since the comics and their creators are anything but unanimous about how that happened, and what is the current state of matters.

Agreed.

Albafan is right though, Doom was utterly horrible in the first and from some of these reviews I've read, not any better in the second...Some new armor and a new face cannot change bad acting and terrible lines...Doom, the ultimate villian that Darth Vader was conceived from being portrayed by the guy from Nip/Tuck, ya.

You act as if it's Julian McMahon's fault for Doom being bad.
It's not like he woke up every morning thinking, "Well now, how can I f*** up Doctor Doom today."

Frankly, I think this version of Doom could've been better with a different actor. However, I'll reserve that judgment for certain until after I see how he handles himself in the new movie. Maybe he'll redeem himself.

Since Doom is apparently brought in to "help," I have to wonder if anyone in the film even mentions that he attacked New York (including the police) and blew things up and tried to kill a bunch of people/DID kill some people in the last movie!

Again, maybe I'm missing something. Doom may have been the greatest villian in the Marvel universe but in my opinion in many of the issues (especially early Lee-Kirby) he was kinda silly, I mean how serious do you want him to be without him standing out like a sore thumb in these movies. They went for a more realistic tone, yet they still had him in the hood and mask so they respected the character to a point. He said things like 'dolt' and spoke in third person, on a printed page...ok. Live action modern audience? Silly.

To me Doom is a twisted eglomaniacal genius who hates Reed and wants absolute power and to rule the world (I know he uses black magic, etc, etc). I think in this movie we see this and Doom unmasked is conniving and ruthless which is the character distilled. I remeber the 60's FF cartoon and the one with Herbie, and Doom was always silly in his featured episodes (the voice work was goofy and he was even less menacing) but he must have been accepted as Doom by the kids who viewed it.Did he come across like they had alway's imagined?

Which leads me to my point, Doom is a comic book villian and with all the people who have read the comics and imagined him in their heads, which to say is the right interpretation?

Again, i'm not saying they got him totally right, but that some fans not liking the film translation does not make it bad for the rest of us.

Its not that simple, and the issue of his suitability is firmly raised in the movie with dire consequences. When its the end of the world, anyone who can help probably gets a pardon.

Well, you know Monarchs have diplomatic immunity...;)

I'm honestly glad Doctor Doom doesn't act like he does in the comic....the comic version tends to be far too over the top and corny.

Refresher course on the unmasked Doom conundrum...

http://forums.superherohype.com/showpost.php?p=11842491&postcount=805

I really prefer the more modern versions of Doom we've been getting lately. Mark Waid did very well with his dialogue (even though there are a lot of things about Doom's actions in "Unthinkable" I would argue with) as did Ed Brubaker's "Books of Doom" . He still comes across as very arrogant and erudite without dipping into the third person so much. I would like to think he only does that for effect from time to time...

I can't wait to not only see the "New Doom"...but I thought that Julian McMahon was one of the only GREAT parts of the first film, and Chiklis, everything else was just OK IMO...

CAH

The thing for me is I don't even really consider Doom in the first film to be unfaithful to the source material. I like how he was portrayed save for minor problems *cough* marco polo *cough*.

The way i see it the first film was more of a set up for Doom to lead him into his full glory for the sequel. Now given the information we have about the more faithful and evil Doom we have in the sequel, is anyone willing to accept the Doom from the first film within the context of how he is presented next? Instead of looking at it as two movies, look at the arc of Doom and how he's grown as a character in the movies. Surely you can say after FF2 that they did a good job developing the character.

Just look at Doom within context of both films and you can see how the FF1 Doom fits.

Well, now I can agree with that for sure......just so the bar-b-que line stays in the novelization and didn't make it to the big screen.....

It always fascinates me the way people will hone in on a single line of dialogue and act like it destroyed the entire performance.

"Marco.... Polo" was the least of my problems with Doom.

Of course it wasn't the biggest problem.....but it is certainly one that I remember everytime the name Doom is mentioned.....and when I read that line in the novelization, it JUST DIDN'T FIT......it wasn't funny.....
