Dracula Year Zero Rises at Universal

Source: Variety July 11, 2006

Universal Pictures has acquired the spec script Dracula Year Zero by new screenwriters Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless and set it up with Michael De Luca to produce via his De Luca Productions, says Variety.

The story explores the origin of Dracula, weaving vampire mythology with the true history of Prince Vlad the Impaler, depicting Dracula as a flawed hero in a tragic love story set in a dark age of magic and war.

Alissa Phillips of De Luca Productions, who brought the project in, will serve as co-producer. Donna Langley, president of production, and Jeffrey Kirschenbaum will oversee the project.

I'm sorry, but, isn't that what Coppola did with his Bram Stoker's Dracula back in '92???

What happened to the Dracula 2 project (Jan de Bont's Blue Tulip Productions teaming with Atchity Entertainment) ?

it might turn out well.

I hope it does. I'm a vampire fan. My concern is that the premise is very similar to Coppola's.

True. What are your candidates for the role?

I loved Oldman's Dracula.

I thought of Michael Wincott but he's a bit old (48), that is if they want to make a franchise out of Dracula. If it's a one shot deal, I think he can pull it off.

Dracula Shmacula

Dracula's been left out in the sun too long. He's cooked! :ghost:

Somebody stick a fork in him. He's (well) done! And by fork I mean stake!

I mean really. Nobody's afraid of Dracula anymore. He's been done, redone, copied, parodied, lampooned, satarized, etc. They even made a movie about the making of one of his movies. Shadow of the Vampire. Now THAT was a pretty good one! :)

For Christ's sake! Flawed tragic hero? C'mon! THE MAN FED A BABY TO VAMPIRE WOMEN!! THEN HE LET LOOSE HIS WOLVES ON THE MOTHER!! How evil and un tragic can you get?

Can't they just do a straight adaptation of the novel?

And have an interesting and true-to-the-book story? Why on Earth would they want that? :)

This isn't the same as the proposed direct sequel to the Dracula novel, is it? Because that idea sounded promising, and it'd be a shame for it to degenerate into this.

I honestly think I will enjoy it. At first when I read the title i was like "this is stupid" but after reading the plot... I dunno, know I wanna see it!

The characters been in close to 1,000 different bad translations, what's one more going to hurt? Maybe it will be one of the handfull thats actually good?

*Remembers Universals recent take in Van Helsing* Okay... Maybe not...
