According to today’s NY Times, Warner will be releasing a straight-to-DVD animated movie tentatively called Tales of the Black Freighter five days after Watchmen opens in theaters. It “follows a side Watchmen storyline about a shipwreck… The DVD will also include a documentary-style film called Under the Hood that will delve into the characters’ backstories.”

The story postulates these kinds of promotions as a way to attempt to reverse soft DVD sales — last years’ figures declined for the first time in the history of the format — and keep the amount of shelf space at retailers from being cut back. Personally, I used to buy a lot more DVDs than I do now. But then I realized how many of them I haven’t watched, and I saw how prices would drop significantly if I waited, and I don’t care about their attempts to create a higher-priced (Blu-Ray) format.

Ron Sanders, the president of Warner Home Video, said, “We are offering retailers a meaningful opportunity to be involved with the theatrical event, to have a product that will generate foot traffic and sales.” But Warner also gets the benefit of having all these little DVD ads on shelves for the increasingly important second weekend in the theaters. The article reports,

The immediate goal is for the parallel release to help start a potential new movie franchise.

How do you create a franchise out of Watchmen? Isn’t the point a single story? Also, DVD plans are as follows: the original tie-in, the film itself on DVD about four months later, and then an eventual “‘ultimate’ edition in which the two are edited together into one megamovie.” Director Zack Snyder says, “The überfans of this property are going to go crazy for that.” Does Watchmen have “uberfans”? Or does writer Alan Moore? That’s not all:

In addition, the studio plans a dozen 22- to 26-minute Webisodes to help make the complex story easier for the uninitiated to digest. Called “The Watchmen Motion Comic,” it will be a panel-by-panel slide show of the graphic novel narrated by an actor.

So this news is essentially "we are making you buy this dvd 3, or possibly 4 times." Great :whatever:

well, there's some of us who rather wait for the package we want
Kill Bill, for example

Why can't the ultimate edition come out the same time as the regular DVD? Interesting marketing idea.

because there's people who will buy both versions, yet, will complain about both versions being made available

I'm prepared to buy any and all editions that come out, and I'll do so with a smile on my face.

Zack Snyder says WATCHMEN DVD will be 3 hours 25 minutes

I’m at the press junket for “Watchmen” and I just spoke to director Zack Snyder. I’ll have exact quotes posted in the next few hours, but I wanted to get this up asap.

While the theatrical release of “Watchmen” is about 2 hours 36 minutes, Zack just told me the DVD/Blu-ray will have two versions to appease the fans that wanted more.

There will be a director’s cut on the DVD that will be 3 hours 10 minutes and another cut with “Tales of the Black Freighter” that will be 3 hours 25 minutes!

He also told me what deleted scenes to expect and I’ll have those exact quotes in the next few hours. Look for an update soon.

UPDATE: Here's exactly what Zack said...and I just posted 9 movie clips from "Watchmen" so click on the link to check them out!

Collider: What is the final running time on the DVD and what can fans look forward to?

Zack: The final running time without the Black Freighter is 3 hours and 10 minutes.

Collider: When you say the Black Freighter, so you’re going to put in some of the animated bits?

Zack: No. The Black Freighter version of the movie, which we call the final cut or the ultimate cut – it has a marketed name that I don’t know exactly what it is. That version of the movie, because when we were up there we physically shot the in’s and out’s, scenes at the newsstand that go into the movie. There’s like scenes where our characters pass the newsstand and then we pick up action at the newsstand and it gets us into the Black Freighter….with shots that go into it and it comes to life and you follow the Black Freighter story and then come back into the movie. That version of the movie is the director’s cut with the Black Freighter intercut. That version sort of traces the structure of the Black Freighter that's integrated into the comic book… So that version is the 3 hour and 25 minute version. So you have all those in’s and out’s…but the director’s cut includes the Hollis death stuff, that’s just a lot more connective tissue…it’s hard for me to even remember exactly what’s in it. But it’s just a lot more.

Collider: So let me ask you, is there footage that isn’t going in this director’s cut that’s sitting on the sidelines…or is this really everything?

Zack: It’s really pretty much everything. The 3 hour version is pretty much everything. There was very little that we shot that I didn’t like or use.

I'll be waiting for the ultimate version.

I'll want all three cuts, if possible (hopefully they'll all be included in one big set). I'll probably like the Director's Cut best. I'm not convinced that the TALES OF THE BLACK FREIGHTER will mix with the film so well, especially given the footage we've seen of it so far.

I hope that Snyder filmed all the stuff with Dr. Long and his wife, and the lesbians. The little speech Dr. Long gives his wife at the end, before he tries to break up the fight is one of my favorite moments in the book. Hopefully it's all there.

I wouldn't get your hopes up.

I'm not buying the initial release. I'll wait for the 'Black Freighter' cut.

Well out of the missing 34 minutes, it wouldn't take up much time. I doubt any action scenes happen in the 34 minutes its just probably more Dr.Manhattan narrating and more of the side characters.

I'm sorry...did Snyder say that Hollis' death is NOT in the theatrical cut?!

What do you guys wanna bet they wait a few months after the theatrical cut to release the super-duper mega ultra watchmen cut?

I'm probably gonna buy the Director's Cut but w/o the Black Freighter, and buy the latter when it comes out. I don't care too much to see it mixed in to justify the extra $30 to see it mixed in, so I'd rather see Watchmen as itself w/ all of the footage in but keep Black Freighter self contained

They've said that's whats happening. Around ComicCon the first DVD will come out and then in the fall the Ultimate version will come out. A lot better then waiting a couple of years for it.

i'll see the movie. rent the directors cut. then buy the ultimate cut.

What's your thoughts on the ultimate cut Motown?

I'm excited for it but also wondering the same as other fans. Will the Black Freighter and the news stand scenes feel right in terms of pacing with the rest of the movie?

I usually buy things on the day...or even pre order...but i really wanna buy the right one...i dont wanna hold off but if black freighter doesnt blend well...then i wouldnt want to get it (id just buy it on its own)
im gonna have to wait and see...seems like i might end up buying alot :(
