E3 2011: Nintendo Edition

Oofta. Put a really good online service and Nintendo you can just take my money now.

Not surprising at all.

I really like this part of the original article.

"Nintendo is doing this one right," said an anonymous source. "[It's] not a gimmick like the Wii." What else, beyond graphics, this may imply about the system is unknown. What kind of controls the system will support (we imagine a need for both classic analog configurations and motion controllers) or what level of software and infrastructure Nintendo will provide for online gaming is also unknown. However, it's a positive sign that the system might be more than just an HD Wii.

I said that the new Nintendo console would not be released in 2011 because of the 3DS, but in 2012 was a given...i also said it was going to be as powerful or more than the 360.....i won.

For my next trick......Microsoft will release the next Xbox this year...or at least announce it and release it in 2012.

I said that Nintendo is the only company that can get away with releasing a new console. Neither Sony, nor Microsoft will anytime soon. I also said in another thread that I'd bet on Nintendo launching a full HD, no gimmick system and bring along their new userbase with them. Nintendo was smart with the Wii... they got a whole new fanbase that will follow them anywhere now.

I agree there will be no xbox or ps4 announcement this year that is a definite. The possibilities are entirely endless with Nintendo bringing out a powerful system.

I hope they keep it fairly casual and don't bother trying to punt out "hardcore" games.

I doubt they'll ever go back to their "We're trying way too hard to be cool and edgy" Play It Loud days, but if the rumors are true and they're trying to do a better job of securing good third party support, you can bet they'll have at least a few core titles that you wouldn't normally associate with Nintendo at their press conference.

**** just got real.

More info, from IGN:

Our sources have said the the console is significantly more powerful (not just a little) than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and that Nintendo’s intent is to recapture the hardcore market. (multiplatform games for the 3 consoles?) – IGN article

IGN’s article contains other interesting nuggets. Apparently the company will distribute a press release this month – confirming the rumors – and will fully unveil the console in June. IGN also notes that the console will be backwards compatible with the Wii and will support 1080p resolutions (can it be the first console to actually have 1080p?)

Moving on, there is quite an interesting article on 01Net. The site’s source leaked NGP specs prior to the handheld’s reveal, which gives the publication some credibility. Like IGN and Kotaku, 01Net has also discussed the Wii HD’s power, noting that it is on par with the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Even more interesting, however, is that the system will feature a “very original” controller – and it doesn’t sound like it will be similar to the Wii remote or Kinect. 01Net additionally believes an announcement will come at E3.

Last but not least, the E3 Twitter account has posted a very interesting message on their Twitter account. Make of it what you will…

“Could it be? Tune in June 7th (Nintendo press-conference day?) and see…. http://fb.me/G77gvduy”

I doubt that they truly know what Nintendo has in store… but you never know!

I'm just thinking about how smart Nintendo is... Seriously, a lot of us may have hated some of the stuff they did with the Wii but the fact is they have a brand new fanbase that will buy anything with Nintendo's name on it now. On top of that they can now focus on us (the ol' die hards) that will buy this up, more so if it has full 3rd party support.

I don't think Nintendo is necessarily going to "focus" on enthusiast gamers per se, but rather they're going to try and do a better job of accommodating us a little better than they did with the Wii.

My question is: What about my Virtual Console purchases? And will Nintendo bring a renewed focus on the Virtual Console for the hardcore market? Maybe adding in some systems that they couldn't have done before like the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast? Maybe adding in some new downloadable games that Nintendo consoles have skipped over like Mega Man 8?

It would be really great if they let you keep all your downloaded games, and I hope they do, and it's what they absolutely should do, but with Nintendo's...lets say "unenlightened" approach to most online stuff, they may be the least likely of the three to support that.

Though if they're serious about getting core gamers on board, that's definitely something they should have right out of the gate.

They need to differentiate themselves from the competition with this next one. I have nothing against motion controllers or casual games, but right now, I'm 4 ft. away from a Wii that hasn't been turned on since last year. When I want a single player game, I turn on my PS3. For online, my 360. My Wii's on only when a triple-A Nintendo exclusive comes out. That needs to change drastically in the next generation of console gaming.

what'd you win? Is Nintendo sending you a free console on day of release?

Not gonna happen. I doubt that we're going to see a new Xbox until 2014 at the earliest.

That's too bad. To me the majority of games are copy pasted across Playstation 3/Xbox360 platforms baring maybe half a dozen exclusives games that are basically like all other games multiplatform. By comparison the WII didn't feel like a interchangeable media centre.

I'd seriously like to see Nintendo gun for Xbox Live. NOTHING less than Live should be acceptable for them, IMHO, more so since their current set up is embarrassing. I mean, it shouldn't be to hard to top PSN... I'd like to see them challenge themselves by trying to create an online function that can compete with Live.
