Guardians of the Galaxy Early Guardians of the Galaxy Box Office Prediction Thread - Part 3

Agreed. GotG REALLY came out of nowhere for me. I had NO idea I was going to have that much fun watching it until it was over. As a matter of fact, I have no argument with anyone who liked CA:TWS better. Maybe the fact that I was so pleasantly surprised by GotG had something to do with the fact that I rated it (slightly) higher. My low point, as far as how movies were going overall, was late June/early July after watching Transformers. At that point in time, I believed all was lost.......

Edit: The only thing I didn't like about GotG was the after credits scene. I would have much preferred to see some foreshadowing or tie in to the other MCU movies.
I'm perfectly fine with the after-credit scene because it continues the same tone in comedy the film had. Plus, I don't really see what other tie-in they could have done beyond the use of Thanos and the Infinity Gem that were already in the main part of the movie without it feeling forced. Plus, we already got the main tie-in to the next Avengers movie with the mid-credit scene from CA: TWS.

I don't see why everybody thinks every after-credit scene just HAS to move the story along or set up some crazy storyline. I believe both TWS & GOTG progressed the story along enough that they could afford the Howard the Duck cameo in GOTG's after-credit cameo.

A healthy balance would be nice; some of the after-credit scenes should serve to move the story along & others should just be a nice little wink at the audience to make them laugh.

Nothing wrong with infusing both over the course of the MCU.

^agreed. I can guess why some fans get upset though. Once upon a time I was a much more involved comics fan who thought the titles he read were Very Important and deserved consideration as Real Literature and all that. The truth was I was mostly erecting defenses against people who said things like "dude, you're 23 years old and you still read comic books?" A "joke" character like Howard would have been a death-blow to all my pretensions. Eventually I got over myself and quit worrying about what other people thought about my choices for entertainment.

Great attitude to have. Too many comic fans have this pathetic need for their hobby to be taken seriously due to insecurity.

I was VERY happy to see Howard the Duck in the after-credit scene. He's a fantastic character that had a landmark run back in the 70's, and is overdue for a revival. I'd love to see him show up in more Marvel movies, and maybe eventually have his own movie again. :)

Howard the Duck is a legend of comic lore. It's great that he's made the jump to modern day and I hope we see him somewhere in GotG2. And welcome to the Hype

yeah. A LOT of people were ragging on GotG early on (A talking raccoon and TREE???). I'm not slamming Howard; just not my cup-o-joe at this point. I'd gladly learn better and I certainly am not upset by the after credits scene. I just wanted to see something more along the lines of what I have become used to seeing. What's in store for GotG and how it may or may not tie into the bigger MCU has yet to be seen. They may or may not have been able to give us a glimpse of a future tie in (or, god forbid, maybe did????? :woot:).

I just felt a little deflated after seeing it. No biggie. Like I said, I walked out of the theater with a HUGE grin on my face and felt all of the TASM2 and BSformers disappointment melt away. A good day for me to be sure.

And the future is gonna be more comic-film dominated than it is Transformers. Don't lose hope buddy! :woot:

so when its all said and done will GOTG stay the number one grossing movie of all movies to come out in 2014 in the US- or will it fall to both Hunger and Hobbit? Even if it does fall to #3 it wont change anything, just personally i love how its the "little engine that could" so to speak. So for u box offe fanatics whats the current projections??

If I had to guess, I think Mockingjay will top GotG and The Hobbit won't. I think the former will be pretty close and the latter no so close. WW, The Hobbit is going to cream everything (uggghhhh.....except maybe $#!t-formers - PART LAST - I hope). Right now, it's estimated to have pulled in almost $307M with a gross last weekend of $10M.

One thing that might hurt it is the fact that Into the Woods and Unbroken both did very good business last weekend and people who might otherwise have gone and seen Mockingjay have gone, and will go, to see them instead.

There are people on this forum who calc this stuff out more carefully than I do and can give you an answer that has a higher probability of being correct, but the drop offs at this point in time of Mockingjay's release tend to be less steep than those early on. My guess for Mockingjay is that it will end up somewhere in the mid-$330s, but, like I said, I'm guessing based on feel rather than hard stats.

I think you're just about right with everything you said. The only other thing to factor in would be the staying power of those new movies. If they have good legs & can stay where they are it'll cut into the profits of Mockinjay just a bit & could deter it from taking the number #1 spot.

If not then, well, you know.

I will definitely be going to see Into the Woods (when I get a chance) and not Mockingjay (I rarely go see a movie twice. GotG was an exception as was Avatar; both of which I saw in 3D twice).

Yeah, looks like Mockingjay will top Guardians domestically, though not by a lot. FWIW GotG continues to pull in a few bucks at the theaters. It's only about $140k short of $333 million. Again, not a bad run at all.

Gitesh Pandya @giteshpandya
#HungerGames #Mockingjay now comfortably set to overtake Guardians to become #1 dom film from 2014. Prob $340M+ final.

2nd place is nothing to sneeze at. Few people predicted it would finish that high.

Yeah Mockingjay was supposed to make double what GotG made domestically.

Not an extra 7 million. :oldrazz:

It was an AWESOME run for a great, fun movie. I remember people talking 200 or 300M WW. Who wants to see a talking Raccoon and Tree? It isn't well known outside of a bunch of fanboys.......and so on. The silence you hear is stunned silence.

The whole point is that we will have a sequel (plus an Awesome Mix #2) and the movie is going to bust out of the gates like Mjolnir on steroids.

Well, just for the record Mockingjay finally inched ahead domestically by about $8k yesterday.

Looks as if Guardians will finish just a bit over $333 million.

Even though American Sniper will make 99.9% of its money in 2015, its limited release in 2014 means that it goes on the 2014 box office chart. It currently stands at #20 on the 2014 domestic box office chart and will continue to rapidly move up. It will likely end up as the #1 domestic grosser of 2014, pushing Mockingjay down to #2 and Guardians down to #3.

It's always been standard practice to count films with a limited release in a handful of theaters in December that then go into wide release the following year on the yearly chart of their initial limited release. It's just unusual, and perhaps unprecedented, for a limited December release to go on to make so much money that it becomes the #1 movie of the year.

After checking out last weekend's Box Office, I'm not so sure anymore. We'll have to see how it does this weekend. If it comes in around $20M, maybe not??? I think it's going to be a lot closer than we thought it would be a couple of weeks ago. Probably ran into that buzzsaw we call the Super Bowl. Now there are some competitive movies on the horizon.....

Yeah, it now looks like it's going to be a close call through to the end. It might end up just a few million short or a few million ahead.

I agree, I don't see it passing Mockinjay or GOTG, especially with Fifty Shades on the horizon. That's going to take an immense chunk out of the profits of every movie that's out right now.
