Elijah Wood is a Serial Killer in "Maniac" Remake

Last year it was revealed that Alexandre Aja (Piranha 3D, The Hills Have Eyes) was developing a remake of "Maniac," the classic 1980 slasher film. Then in August, "P2" director Franck Kahlfoun was brought on to direct.

Now comes word that Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings) has been cast as Frank, the lead character in the film. He will be joined by Nora Arnezeder (Safe House) who will be playing Anna. The plan is to begin filming later this year.

In "Maniac," Wood plays the role of a serial killer who works at a shop that sells antique mannequins. He finds victims on the Internet and stalks them like prey, all the while suffering from hallucinations that throw him back into the past, when he was abused by his own mother. In his twisted mind, he gains a measure of revenge against his mother with each kill.

This isn't the first time Wood would play a deranged killer. The actor previously played a cannibal named Kevin in "Sin City."

I just watched the original a month ago and I loved it. Joe Spinell was just haunting as the serial killer.

Elijah Wood is the nice, next door type neighbor, that seems approriate to play a demented killer, like what he did in Sin City. He's really well suited to play such a role.

I've seen the original and it's quite a disturbing movie. I'm not opposed to a remake set in contemporary times and Elijah can definitely do the part justice.

The original is one of my favorite movies, nothing can ever out-do the original's gunshot to the face.

The dumb-thing is that the original was panned big time by critics for being to violent and disturbing (seriously, what did they expect!? ) while this one will surely be praised -_-

Elijah's portrayal as Kevin in Sin City still haunts my darkest nightmares.

He really is perfect for this type of stuff.

I still need to see the original. Even though Wood's played a killer before there's something really interesting about him doing these type of roles.

The original film is worth seeing, It's a very mental deconstruction of a madmen.

Without giving away the plot, Elijah Wood's character is obsessed with them.

Serial killer profiling rule #1: Arrest the guy who works at a shop that sells antique mannequins.

Seriously though, this looks cool, like Kevin's story from THG fleshed out (so to speak) over an entire feature.

I think Wood fits perfectly as psycotic characters. I hope he develops a taste for these kind of roles and becomes a future Sir Christopher Lee, ie. iconic bada** villain actor!

Elijah Wood is just dandy for that bat**** feel. Dem eyes.

The "Why are you scared? WHY?!" line creeped me. Can't wait to check this out.
