I think many of us in here like to think of ourselves as film buffs to a degree. So here's the scenario, a friend who knows your love of films comes to you and asks the question 'Know any good films to watch?'. Now you could easily go for something nerdish that you'll like, or be a bit more showy and go for some gritty art house piece that only you've seen, but both aren't guaranteed to be liked by everyone, or you could also be lazy and just say the last thing you saw. Boring! Put the thinking cap on, you've gotta think of something that's broad and appealing to the masses, something that is unlikely to offend, something that's easy to find at the DVD store, and you've gotta think quickly as your movie watching reputation is on the line. Break the glass, pull the spare parachute, your mate is waiting for your answer, what is your emergency movie recommendation?

What about a foreign film that is more mainstream in the way it presents itself. That way, you win on both sides of the fence.

Films like:

Baader Meinhof complex
Mesrine
La Haine
The Green Butchers
Amelie

Foreign-film wise:

Pan's Labyrinth
Let the Right One In
The Orphanage

Son of the Mask

they'll never bug you to watch a movie with them again :cwink:

but in serious...

Hero
or one of the great Bond Movies

I guess I should add mine. I gotta say Midnight Run.

American Beauty
The Sting
All The President's Men
Charlie Wilson's War
A Fistful of Dollars

All these films are have gripping performances, are briskly paced for people with short attention spans and are the kind of movies not a lot of people have seen but still etches its claws deep into the viewer and don't let go until the end credits. Most importantly, for the general audience, these films are just plain fun to watch. Of course there are many, many more and these are just a few off the top of my head.

In Bruges.

i always recommend this and barely ever does anyone watch it

now someone gives me a good suggestion

been revising for exams and its my birthday tomorrow so for the next few hours i wanna kick back and relax with something light hearted to take my mind off of ****ing exams (and the 4 hour drive I gotta do monday morning)

I lost all my movie cred with someone after I suggested that film.

It's definitely a love/hate thing. I guess. But I lose all movie credibility for anyone who doesn't like it.

^Perfect use of that picture. :lmao:

The Big Lebowski is one of those films that end friendships.

I can't be friends with anybody who dislikes that movie. Just can't do it.
