Episode 14 - 'Mystery in Space!' Discussion Thread

I thought 13 was meant to be the season finale.

I thought they'd be taking a hiatus after 13 (like The Batman and Spectacular Spider-Man did). Apparently not.

I knew they had 26 episodes already in the can (with a recent order for 26 more), so I guess they're just going to go through the whole slate.

I'm glad Adam Strange is appearing, since I know only a little about him.
Aquaman is always fantastic, so it'll be interesting as to why he's sad, maybe he finds out that everyone considers him a joke? :woot:

Previews are up at Worlds Finest:

Looking fantastic, and good to finally have another female role. Adam Strange looks great, despite that I've read so little of him. Nice to see the Gordanians too.

But man oh man is that preview with The Question cool. Yes, I wish he did a little more, but this Equinox character is very intriguing, is he made up for the series? Also, since that is only the teaser can we assume this is the "story arc" that one of the producers stated would happen in the second season?

Any chance someone can put the preview up on youtube?

Thank you kind sir. =)

Good episode. I was surprised to see Aquaman get some more depth to his character.

In the teaser, the mysterious Equinox kidnaps Gorilla Grodd and the Question, and plans to kill them in order to restore the "balance". Batman foils him, and he and the Question team up to chase Equinox, but escapes. An excellent teaser that not only introduces us to the Question, but also sets up a major storyline for the second season.

As for the main story, a depressed Aquaman joins Batman in an adventure on planet Rann as Adam Strange and his army defend it from the Gordanians. I have to admit, the main story isn't that interesting. Adam Strange and his space world were visually interesting, but the story was kind of dull. There's also not a lot of humor in this one, the little of it coming from depressed Aquaman.

However, the motivation for Aquaman becoming depressed was actually good. So far, all of Aquaman's adventures were victorious, so when he faces a tragedy (even a seemingly small one), he probably wouldn't take. Fortunately, he got better. I also have to praise the Adam Strange/Alanna romance. It was refreshing to see full-blown romance on an action superhero show without being corny. Not something you see everyday.

Overall, a decent season opener, but the teaser was the best part.

NEXT WEEK: Batman fights the Calendar Man, as he unleashes his holiday crime on Halloween Night. Then, Batman must travel back to 19th century Victorian England, and help Jason Blood clear his name for crimes caused by Gentleman Jim Craddock

I was lukewarm toward this episode.
I thought with both Batman and Aquman around that Adam Strange got shorted.
Adam was always a solid "Thinker" and "Planner".
I thought Adam came off as a whiner.
Plus I wish Alanna and Sardath had a little to do.
But it was nice seeing them in action.

Did enjoy the opener with The Question.

I don't know much about Strange, but is he also a Flash Gordon knockoff ala Hawkman. I think i even heard some Queen-type music in this episode's soundtrack.

This episode in my opinion was one of the worst of this series. Not really any comedy, the plot was dull, Strange didn't have much in this episode and seemed his bits could have been longer along with Alanna and Shardarath(spelling bad), Aquaman was all depressed and the beginning(the bit I was most anticipating) was a letdown. Equinox is an interestng villain and I hope in seeing him again but Batman stole the spotlight from yet another hero (the question). I mean, Question barely said anything and seemed like just some c-list hero compared to Batman which he isn't. The background, Equinox and an animated Strange/Question was nice though and so was the music but apart from that a very dull episode. I'm kinda dissapointed actually.

4-5/10

Yeah, the Question bit sucked. The character has alot to live up to after his awesome JLU episodes, although they made him alittle too "Rorschach-y" in those episodes.......i know,i know......Rorschach is the Question.......on crack.
Speaking on Charlton comics,i want Captain Atom!

Equinox seems very interesting, was also nice to see the Question. :) Now the episode itself was really boring, because for me it was just a science-fiction story with 50s surroundings, i mean the silly alien lizardmen and the pew pew lazors just isn't my thing. Aquaman's subplot and his encouraging speech on the otherhand was awesome, so was Adam Strange and his lover. :P Oh well in next episode we see Batman with his Gotham Gaslight costume, this show is made of win.

I'm not understanding the hate for the episode, I loved it. It wasn't the best so far, but it was damn enjoyable.

Adam Strange I felt was very well done here, I like that out of all three of the heroes, it was actually Batman who got the lesser screentime. Emo Aquaman was hilarious, I loved that it too bringing Adam down to his level to realise he was being an idiot. His speech was awesome sauce. His reason for being so sad was actually quite good, an adventurer like him seeing that despite all his efforts, his friends are slaughtered everyday would most definitely be very upset.

Back to Adam Strange, I love that his romance with Alanna was explored, it was nice finally get a major female character in the show, and the romance was sweet. I also loved loved loved seeing Gotham again, I was happy to see Adam Strange's periodic returns to Earth shown, loved his quick thinking too.

And of course great music for this one, I love that they are diversifying. The opening was spectacular too, it was so noirish. I'll be a bit annoyed if Question doesn't get a whole ep though, but I think it's pretty much assured he will.

Overall I'm greatly happy about this opening, I recommend watching again!

I was less entertained by this than I thought I would be. I wouldn't cite it as a bad episode, but a little below what I'm used to from this show.

I was just hoping Aquaman wasn't bemoaning a fight with Mera or something. The Beluga Whale issue was easier to swallow, but still left me a little flat. I did enjoy his speech after his rejuvenation. I was waiting for the customary "Outrageous!", but must have missed it if it happened.

A little more Adam Strange/Rann focus would have been nice and I certainly hope to see more of Equinox later on.

Batman, how's your aim?
Impeccable.

:funny:

what? No offense, but compared to Batman, The Question IS a C list hero....that dosent make him any less good.

I didn't really get the beginning, how did Batman stop that giant scale from dropping them into the fire by landing on the Question's side?

Equinox wanted to stop Grodd from taking over the world and upsetting the balance, but in order to do that he needed to kill Question too because otherwise killing Grodd would upset the balance between good and evil also.

When given the choice of saving Question or Grodd, Batman chose Question, because Equinox would never kill an uneven amount. If he had tried to save Grodd first, Batman and Grodd would fall to their fiery doom while Question would live, because then balance would be achieved. But because Batman chose Question, everyone was spared, as there was no way to achieve the balance Equinox sought to bring.

Rather clever I thought.
