The Penguin Episode 8: A Great or Little Thing (Spoiler Thread)

I'm just trying to piece together how Arkham (and its inmates) are going to factor into all of this at some point. Because right now things seem to be going down a very mob-heavy road. Part III could very well be Two-Face vs Penguin.

I get it, but I hope there's no season 2.

They told a great one and done story, they're keeping it moving in Part II, just move on to another character instead.

Don't screw with perfection.

I mean, they hinted at Oz's future ambitions. Ambitions that would be wonderful to flesh out beyond being a secondary character in a Batman focused movie can do. Frankly, probably best to keep Penguiin focus on the small screen, to get different villains in the movies.

If we're going the Mayor Cobb route, then I could see Oz orchestrating a breakout to focus the GCPD's efforts on the 'freaks' and, maybe by extension, the Batman. Could be a great time to bring in Bartholomew Wolper as a talking head on the news blaming the rise in new villains to the presence & lawless-ness of Batman.

I wonder if that's what the Bruce part of the story is gonna be

Maybe Bruce's first action as Bruce Wayne to help the city is to try and secure ownership of Arkham, due to him deducing Sofia being framed and investigating into Arkham's corrupt underbelly?

And maybe the owner of Arkham (potentially Strange, potentially not) is his main obstacle in that regard

That's been my theory for a good while now, albeit with likely the added rub that the back half of Part 3 probably pivots to Joker and Two-Face, after Penguin and the mobs are all taken down.

My guess is Bruce either winds up in Arkham or a heavy focus on Joker in the Hannibal role.

That was a great finale and I can agree with the decisions they took with the main characters (Vic :waa: ). What a show!! Will be rewatching that a bunch of times, and so happy Sofia still lives at the end of it.

Made a couple of avvys for anyone to use

As if Milioti hasn't already done enough damage to smoking reduction efforts worldwide. :funny: There should be a legal limit on how cool you're allowed to look while doing it.

I think the key of the show here, is that we are seeing the devolution of Gotham's gangs. I mean, Riddler's people are still out there, but now the more organized crime families are pretty much gone. The mob structure and hierarchy was pretty much all overthrown.

This is the arc of the Batman universe since Batman Year One.

Bruce Wayne becomes Batman to fight the mob, corrupt cops, etc. That main threat is ultimately replaced by the costume supervillains and the crazies. That has been the constant theme for Batman for a long time in comics and other media (Long Halloween, The Dark Knight, etc).

Reshoot all of Penguin’s scenes from the movie with this kid. Bats and Gordon just laying into a twelve-year-old while he mocks them for their bad Spanish.
If David Mazouz wasn't older now than he was when Gotham first started, I'd say let him and this kid just recreate random scenes as Bruce and Oz.

Marvel would have made it a point to bring up the Spanish again… but this showrunner and Matt are smart enough to not.

Yes and no. I think Selina writing to Sofia in Arkham is an important parallel to her first time there. Her brother was the only one to visit her. In fact, so much about her actions were a result of her losing Al. Now, here she is, she has burned, killed, and alienated pretty much all traces of her old life and family. Which is why they show her kind of catatonic when Dr Simp came in. But, now, here is a new family member reaching out to her. It goes with her goals of a new life.

It feels like setup because we are comic book nerds and have learned to expect that from everything.
My only disappointment was that Zoe didn’t do a voiceover while Sofia was reading the letter

One great call/insight, reading around

Reddit comment (Medium_Trip_4227) in r/ThePenguin:

"I don’t know if it was foreshadowing or not but the first time we meet Oz’s mom might’ve been the clue all along

He asks her why her pills are in the tub and she responds “the boys were in the tub they didn’t want to get out”. Here comes the absolute brilliance of the show. The look Oz gives his mother when she says that is scared/confused and bewildered. We as the audience think Oz is reacting to his mom mind slipping into dementia but Oz really makes that face because he fears she’s connecting the dots to him murdering his brothers (locking them inside and letting them drown in the water). I could be wrong but it seems too close to be anything other than that. It just shows the absolute mastery of this writing."
Good Catch.

I dont care what anybody says i STILL think Dr Julian was a hallucination :funny:

Seriously the sole complaint i have with this show is how this character waas edited in. So awkward. And hes just working at Arkham now like normal now?

It doesn’t seem too far fetched to me. It’s not uncommon for people to leave a place of employment and then return. And it’s not like he was fired or anything. If anything, he has a considerable amount of dirt on the place and could probably blackmail his way in if he wanted to.

In a town with Joker and Riddler, Oz is easily the sickest **** around. Dressed up like his ma? Jesus.
Kinda makes you wonder what horrifying antics Joker and Riddler would be up to in this universe without the restraints of a PG-13 rating, and that's with Riddler already pushing that envelope in the movie with the rat trap scene alone.

I've also gotta say, to anyone saying "I hope Batman beats the hell out of Oz in Part II", I agree with you for one. But until then I implore you to rewatch the Batmobile chase scene again, specifically the end. It's especially cathartic now seeing Oz's car get absolutely wrecked.
