I just busted one when I read this! My freaking God I can't wait!!!!!!! This is going to be a popular topic! The original is one of my favorite films of all time. Top 20 for sure. The sequel blew ass but can you imagine what they could have done with this franchise? Now we'll see and with a real budget!!!

Butler

Hot off the socko bow of "300" this past weekend, star Gerard Butler is at the center of a package that CAA began shopping Monday for a remake of John Carpenter's 1981 actioner "Escape From New York."

Neal Moritz is attached to produce, with "Black Hawk Down" scribe Ken Nolan penning the screenplay.
Several studios are battling for the pic, mostly because the $70 million launch of "300" signaled the arrival of an emerging action star in Butler. A deal is expected to be made this week.
Butler would play Snake Plissken, the one-eyed convict who's charged with heading into the inescapable maximum security prison formerly known as Manhattan to liberate the U.S. president. Kurt Russell originated the role and reprised it in the 1996 sequel "Escape to L.A."

"Escape from New York" Remake Dead

By Garth Franklin Thursday July 21st 2011 04:56AM
While four of John Carpenter's early features have scored remakes, a fifth one in the works looks to have hit a wall.
Deadline reports that New Line and Warner Bros. Pictures have allowed the option on a remake of 1981's "Escape from New York" to expire.
Kurt Russell starred as the eye patch-wearing antihero Snake Plissken in the original which was set in a near future totalitarian United States where Manhattan Island has been turned into a maximum security prison and Plissken has one day to rescue the U.S. President who is being held hostage there.
New Line and producer Neal Moritz have been working on the reboot for several years. The likes of Gerard Butler, Jeremy Renner and Tom Hardy have previously been linked to play Plissken.

Maybe it's for the best. Who knows?

......besides, the plot of the upcoming Judge Dredd reboot, "Dredd", has parallels to that of "Escape From New York", not to mention the protagonist(Judge Dredd ofcourse) being a bada$$ anti-hero like Snake Plissken.

kurt russell IS snake plissken, but i'd be interested in seeing this.

I'm overjoyed. Kurt is indeed Snake. If they want to make an Escape 3 I'm game. Otherwise leave it alone. I'd even accept a prequel set during Snakes war service before a flat out remake.

Thankfully the remake is dead & stays dead! It's blasphemy, because Kurt Russell is Plissken & no one else. Remakes suck soooooooooo bad.

Guard - What do you think you are doing

Butler - I AM ESCAPING

In his Leonidas yelling voice

Couldn't have picked a better company for this to be at than Silver. This movie is going to be great. :)

I'm all for a remake sorry but the original sucks. It's classic 80s cheese and not in a good way. Yeah yeah I hear oh Snake Plissken is a bad ass but why is he exactly because I'm told he is. There certainly wasn't anything in that movie that showed me he was. And I agree with Jason Clarke. The world needs more Jason Clarke

i honestly didnt like the original much either

Perosnally I prefer Big Trouble in Little China over 'Escape from NY'

Nah, it's classic 80s. A LOT of 80s film were full of cheese, this one was no worse than most.

No, it's not because you're told he is a badass. It has to do with his overall attitude and how he doesn't take **** from people.

I do too.

I really didn't want to see this happen but I knew it was inevitable. If they cast Jason Statham I will 100% boycott this project to the end.

^I would be dissapointed in Statham too, not that I dont like him, but he isnt a Snake Plissken.

I do actually think this may be one movie that would benefit from a re-make though, the first one, while still pretty good, is very out-dated.

See thats why its so special to me, because of the time period it was made I love how "outdated" it is. It's a classic film and one of my faves, pure classic John Carpenter at his absolute best.

As far as casting goes, I would prefer an unknown actor. Someone that you can easily see as the new Snake. I also like Statham, but agree that he isn't right for the role. I want to see some form of Snake, not just Statham with an eye patch...if they include the eye patch.

I thought this remake was dead in the water.

IGN has Statham or Hardy but neither of them I really want. Russell just has that look about him, you know?

Doing this kind of film now just doesn't work, just look at Lockout. Recasting Snake is like recasting The Terminator to me, you just can't do it.
