My PS3 has decided to start dying on me and I am going to have to ship it to Sony rather soon. But before I do that, I want to get an external hard drive to back up my data.

I came across this particular external hard drive and I was wondering if this would be a good one to get:

I never really heard of this brand before and the few customer reviews I read of Digistor products seem to be really good, but the fact that I never heard of this brand makes me rather wary. So should I get this one or a different external hard drive?

Honestly, for $20 more you can get a Seagate 2 TB (2000 GB) external HDD. That's what I would get if I were you. That way you can use it for more than just backing up your PS3.

Personally I hate those SG HD's. Had one it failed within a month, someone else I know had two and they both failed. But another friend has two and loves them.

Go to newegg.com and get either a 1 or 2TB. Going to be the best bang for your buck right now. I like Seagate and Lacie. But in all honestly they all have about a 1-10% failure rate so it doesn't really matter.

What I do is buy an internal HD.

A. Because they are cheaper.

B. Their warranties are generally 3-5 years.

C. If you buy with your AMEX card it doubles their warranty.

I like external because it's often easier to move to another computer or similar device if you need to transfer files and don't want to or can't use an internet connection for it. The obvious downside is when connected externally you're often on a slower USB2 or Firewire port unless you've got an eSATA capable drive and computer. Otherwise internal is the way to go.

Oh I REALLY like the Lacie External HDDs. I haven't had one problem with the one that I have, and they look really good too.

sorry to hijack a little but going back to the PS3 thing:

my PS3 drive is kaputz. Instead of buying a brand new PS3 (for info sake, I have the 80gb one), can i just buy one of these harddrives and swap it out?

I don't really care about what i have stored on the harddrive. I don't have too much on there. I'm just wondering if I can do this and save money instead of getting a whole new system

Absolutely. You can even get a plain ole laptop hard drive and replace the one that is currently installed in your PS3. It's really not hard to do at all. In fact, here is a pretty good tutorial on how to do it.....
