We finally have Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, the real verison of that film and thus disregarding Lester's Superman II as THE Superman II film since 1980. Reading and listening how the Donner cut came together, it somehow made me think of how fans make their own versions of movies (trailers too) by splicing together clips. Then I ended up thinking of the other Superman films and I thought of this:

What would it be like if I, or some fan, took Richard Lester's Superman II, Superman III, and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace and spliced them together to create a whole new movie?

I think we could use the Paris sequence from Lester's SII since that's not in the Donner cut, and would lead to the plot in SIV. Since I have never seen SIII and SIV, I'm gonna state guesses and examples from what I know from them from what I've been told. Examples: I believe we could use the Smallville scenes from Superman III and as for SIV, use the whole movie but cut out things to make the film okay or good (50/50 chance on that).

Cuting things like him talking to the Kryptonian council in the Fortress, him as Clark flying with Lois, maybe the kid who was begging Superman to get rid of the nukes, take out Luthor's escape from prison and tone down the Lex/Lenny scenes, maybe take out (or try to) the part where Lois gives the package to Clark and inside is his cape and the crystal that revives him. The final things would be to cut down the camp and cut down, or take out, what makes SIV so bad to begin with. Also, I believe Ma Kent being dead should stay but the farm being taken over should go. Unless it can't.

My guesses for SIII and SIV are this: for SIII, I believe we can still use the Good Superman vs. Bad Superman but we might wanna take out the Richard Pryor connection. How we could do that? I don't know. And for SIV: the Daily Planet take over could be taken out but I guess it has to stay (again, never saw these two films). For that, its up in the there.

If this were to happen, one of things would be to give this project film a title and a plot summary. Now I don't know about the title, but I guess you could say in this project's plotline that its about Superman trying to find a greater purpose in this world rather than being a savior, he might wanna change things about the world for the better. After going back to Smallville and taking care of a personal tragedy (Ma Kent's death) and ending up meeting a past love (Lana Lang), he goes back with his desicion to get rid of nuclear weapons (where SIV comes in).

That's basically my idea. Love it, like it, hate it. I can imagine alot of things from people's mouths when they read this. But it could be a good idea. Since Superman Returns has replaced Superman III & Superman IV, and Donner's Superman II has replaced the Lester version, these are not important anymore. Unless we do this.

What do you think?

it's a good Idea but you really shouldn't jump to conclusions about things you havent seen. My advice, watch III & IV and then go back and watch II then rethink your idea to see if you were right in your asumptions.

It's a great idea, but would it be too choppy, and would there be too many differences in terms of continuity?

I thought of it as more of taking Lester's SII, SIII & SIV and making a whole new movie and thus replacing those films in the process.

Like I would look at it as:
Superman: The Movie>>Superman II (Donner Cut)>>Superman III (the fan project one).

To me, only Superman I and II: Donner cut would edit well as one movie.

I think they should edit the scene where Superman gets drunk at the pub in III between Lois' death and whe Superman turns back time in I. Throw in a Marlon Brando voice over for kicks.

My son, it is forbidden for you to interfere with human lives.

Absolutely. It's one giant script split into two, after all. Supes I and II are one big story. III and IV are individual stories.

I've decided that I'm going to attempt to do a sort of maxi-cut of my S:TM and my favorite Lester/Donner scenes of SII and try to construct one long epic film. After that, I'm going to try my hardest to put together my own personal versions of SIII and SIV. I've already done a rough cut of the changes I always wanted to see in the movie Supergirl, and the finished product came out much better than I thought. I don't have enough PC power to do the kinds of edits I want, but I've done some simple splicing of scenes that eliminated many of the horrible plot holes in the film as well as some of the unnnecessary scenes, bad dialogue, or bad FX shots. For that one I used my Director's Cut DVD from Anchor Bay, and an outline of the problems of Supergirl made by Dharmesh @ Superman Cinema, which helped to greatly streamline the film and give it a sharper sense of logic and clarity. Hopefully, there are enough workable deleted scenes in SIV to do a fan cut of that movie as well. However, I've heard advanced word from people who've bought the Region 3 and 4 discs that said there were numerous scenes missing (probably to derail ideas like mine), but I'm going to give it the college try.

That's quite a project! Good luck.
