Exactly
They aren't unprofitable. For the longest time through the 80s and 90s X-Men was Marvels premier franchise. Marvel sold those rights as they were amongst their most profitable. Marvel may try to bury them but they'd still be profitable, it'd just be marvel would be choosing not to profit from them.
Yes, during the 90s the X-Men were a big deal for Marvel. Outside of Spidey, the X-Teams were likely their biggest asset.
But the lack of live action rights has crippled the profitability potential of the franchise for Marvel, and ultimately the Mouse. Certainly Disney could squeeze a few additional bucks out of the franchise by putting Electronic Wolverine Claws on the shelves and putting Gambit into Disney Infinity 3.0. But even so the X-Men and related characters would lag far behind the Avengers, Spidey, Guardians, the Netflix Defenders and the two SHIELD shows on ABC in terms of generating income.
For Marvel, the FF and the X-Men are the two lowest ranking salesmen on the board, nowhere near qualifying for the Cadillac Car. Or even the set of steak knives. I see this as a big problem for both Marvel and FOX, and I am hoping it will get resolved.
