I said the exact same thing to my co-workers not too long ago. I mean, yeah, he was great in Whiplash and The Spectacular Now, but part of the reason he was so convincing in those roles is BECAUSE of his punchability factor, lol.

Funny you girls are saying that. Just the other day I was telling a co-worker that every time I see Miles Teller, I want to punch him. He just wreaks of certified *****elord.

i wouldn't bet on that... FOX does have share holders... and well... if this film bombs and they realize all 3 films were a colossal waste of money... (and if it's true they do pay "rent" to some extent on these properties.. then... there's no longer a point keeping them.. they will just continue to funnel out money with no return profit... Might as well make a deal for something you could actually use (x-men tv rights) rather than just let something collect dust

Question though. At what point is there too much harm done to the franchise? Obviously Marvel Studios would love to have all of the IP's back, but what about after the tomfoolery we've seen for FF4? They've made it a joke to the GA.

I don't think it's so great to beat people yourself, period.

So if you're going to be a character who is perhaps best known for punching people, and have some kind of arc where you turn that use of violence into something productive, I would think something like that would be okay.

I do think calling it "child abuse" is splitting hairs. It's abuse, period. Hurting people physically is generally abusive in one sense or other.

And yet physical violence is the backbone of the "hero".

Ben shouldn't be linked with "abuse" period... he's not even more of a "lover than a fighter" in the books.. he's not violent and not the hulk... he breaks through walks picks up stuff and throws them, protects his family... he's not really superman or batman and comes out there beating people

See, I don't hate that. That's actually sort of an interesting idea to incorporate that classic line, properly executed.

If they had say, used that to juxtapose the once-bullied Ben and his ability to now take down bullies, and his joy in being able to do so, it would give that line and its use some real emotional weight.

Or make it part of character interaction and build up like: Ben advises Reed to stand up against bullies and fight, offers to be there to help him. Reed says you cannot solve all problems by clobbering people. Then in a scene where Reed is being beaten up, Ben shows up and says the catchphrase, linking to the previous. And it becomes an uplifting thing. Because sometimes you DO need to clobber people.

I don't think seeking legal action is the right thing to do... FOX can easily counter their argument by saying "well you did cancel your own comic" or "they refuse to sell any merchandise of the characters we can make movies on... even cartoons..." and there's likely enough evidence to support that... and not enough for marvel to say "Well we let you use our logo and we put lots of advertising on the disney channel"

the best option is for FOX to suck it up, and try to make a deal for the X-men TV rights

Seeing as how abuse is a form of bullying, and bullying is pretty much what superheroes stand up against when it comes to powerful supervillains and the like...I don't think it's that far fetched or irrelevant to the themes involved. Especially in a movie that bothers to show Reed and Ben during their childhoods.

In the comics, "gentle giant" or not, the character is constantly punching things and getting in battles. He engages in physical violence on a regular basis. To the point where his catchphrase indicates this.

Oh, I think so.. I think there's so many ways to weave the 4 in... especially their catalog.

A lot will depend on how they do with Spidey, he's in a more similar situation.. and if his reboot is a success.. then Marvel will likely feel more confident with the F4 too..

now we might not get a solo for a bit.. but it wouldn't shock me if they show up in phase 4. There's so many ways to introduce them.. they can show up in an avengers film, a spider-man film (he did try to join them after all), an inhumans film, and even a black panther film.. there's ways to weed them in .. they are so central.

I don't think the damage is undo-able.. look at hulk... it took Avengers for them to get him right and make him enjoyable

Theres nothing irreparable about this franchise. Just takes time, and a little sweet magic. The F4 are forever ruined and marvels name isnt tarnished.

Yeah, what makes him sympathetic is that he was a guy who had his entire life ruined by the accident, he was turned into a monster. He will never have any semblance of a normal life. No need for abuse to be in his backstory.

Also all this bullying garbage. Ben Grimm gets picked on by his older brother. Join the freaking club! When I was young, my older brother would never give me a moment's peace. There's only one snippet of this. It's hardly what I would consider ABUSE.

In fact, after it happens, his mother quickly shuts it down and takes the brother to task.

The article is full of uncensored swearing so I can't link to it, but he talks to a random waitress about his penis size and says he'll order the reporter the "no rape service" from Uber after she tells him about their recent sexual assault accusations, among other things.

The reporter lady clearly hated him but even after you take out all of her commentary, none of what he says sounds good.
