Fantastic Four: First Steps General News & Discussion Thread (TAG SPOILERS)

The OG 2000s FF was FUN with GREAT CASTING. Idc what ANYONE SAYS
For the most part the cast was good. Chiklis as Thing was pretty much perfect. Evans was a fun Johnny. Gruffudd was fine as Reed. Alba wasn't even that bad as Sue but the makeup for the second movie was distractingly insane.

Julian McMahon as Doom, though? Totally uninspired casting. Granted a lot of what was wrong about the character was a script issue but McMahon didn't exactly do anything to improve it.

The first film was 11th in a year with Star Wars, Harry Potter, King Kong and Batman Begins at number 9.

But more important than the theatrical run was home video and Network TV.

There were times I couldn’t turn on the TV without seeing the FF.
11th place doesn't mean anything, it's about real world dollars and the first movie only made $330 WW and the 2nd just over 300 WW. That's not terrible especially considering their budgets of 100 mil and 130 mil, but that's also not outstanding either. They're mid level blockbusters. There is a reason a 3rd movie never happened

They did okay between box office and home video but if we use merchandise and marketing as a popularity barometer for comparing it with the other Marvel movies back then, it was pretty far from the level of Spider-Man or X-Men. I also remember Ang Lee's Hulk having a bigger marketing blitz than the Tim Story FF movies even though that one didn't do as well at the box office.
That's just it, they did OK. There is a reason a 3rd one was never made. It's okay if you have nostalgia for these movies, but I just cannot agree with the statement that they were popular.

Racist. It's called racist.

I find it strange that her hair in the first film was much more natural and then they decided to make her a platinum blonde which made her look like M3gan.

Rumor has it the blonde damaged her hair so she didnt want to dye her hair again

This is why I'm always hesitant to wave off dyeing actor's hair for roles, especially when it's not necessary.
I'm not.

It means, as I said from the start: They were “fairly popular”. They weren’t blockbusters (and I never claimed they were), but people saw the films.

I would say 11th place was “fairly popular”. If you want to quibble over that definition, go ahead.

I agree. They didn't leave much of a lasting impact outside of Cloud Galactus being a pressing issue for comic book fans.

Agree to disagree on this one. Outside our slice of heaven on here and other comic book nerds I know, I don't know anyone that remembers these movies at all or even saw them. Even at the time, and I knew plenty who saw X-Men, Spider-Man, etc.

I can't watch it now cause I am at an Easter thing for my youngest!!! Grrrrrr

Biggest takeaway is that Youtube's videos are looking like s*** lately. That compression is terrible.

As for the movie itself... errhh, besides the production design, it isn't showing me anything different that I haven't seen in the Tim Story movies, honestly. It looks like a remake of Rise of the Silver Surfer.

Lately? Their compression has always been terrible. The Batman trailers , due to the heavy use of grain, were borderline unwatchable on there.

I know, but is gotten even terrible now that they have the "1080p Premium" option.
