Fantastic Four: First Steps General News & Discussion Thread (TAG SPOILERS)

Again I still think Norrin Radd might show up, but at this point, IDGAD.

As long as we hear “To me, my board!” and the character can take a punch from The Thing that sends them clear across Midtown Manhattan, I’ll be a happy camper.

If he's not Surfer but just Radd and he's bald, he can say "to me, my X-Men!"

The Marketing has been bad. Pretty random if you ask me. The trailer looks good production wise, but the Silver Surfer looks like a joke and it seems to be the dominant topic in discussion which overshadows all else. I wholeheartedly agree with your second point, the character dynamics for what I'd expect from the FF are missing.

It hasn't been great marketing thus for for any of the comic book films to be honest, whether it be this, Superman or Thunderbolts. The difference is Superman has a pretty big name director in Gunn who has a significant social media presence and a cute dog that will bring in an audience Superman normally wouldn't attract. FF and Thunderbolts don't really sustain the conversation online like Supes does, although there is often a near decade old controversy that partly keeps that dialogue alive.

Right now, I'd say Gunn's Superman reboot will be the only one that makes serious cash.
I disagree with it being badly marketed.
They've done a pretty decent job so far with the FF's marketing.
All of the July films haven't done much promoting yet because it's too early and, in Marvel's case, because they have to focus on promoting another film first.

We will really see the marketing kick into gear after Thunderbolts releases.

I also think part of the reason for Fantastic Four's marketing is the tight shooting/release schedule. I'm also comparing it to other promotion they've done in the past, which seemed to build more anticipation prior to the trailers dropping. I like that people seem to point to The Thing as a positive, he should be one of the most beloved characters in Marvel.

For Superman, it had a 5 month head start on production. I think part of the reason they didn't show more footage besides that opening scene at cinema con is because of the reshoots that have happened. Even though Gunn doesn't do or need reshoots.

The reaction to Silver Surfer online is not good.

I'm not sure why Marvel Studios just didn't choose to use Norrid to avoid possible discourse. Like its quite typical for franchises/film adaptations to get these reactions and they still went for it.

All of the July films have only just started to really go in on the marketing. They'd want to maketing costs as low as they can within reason as to not inflate the budget too much. That's a big reason why marketing for films in general have changed from being months on end to starting only a couple months before release.

Superman is the same in this regard. You don't want to blow all your money on advertising, especially in this climate where you can't guarantee it doing huge billion dollar numbers

Discourse will always happen online. That's just the climate we are in. The usual suspects already attempted to do that with Vanessa's innocent comment on how she will portray Sue.

They just need to show Silver Surfer doing cool stuff and looking cool from now on and the negativity will be drowned out.

Superman is going to succeed at the box office, because its Superman. If it doesn't, then that would be because of the quality of the film, rather than disinterest to the character.

Thunderbolts* and Fantastic 4, could be much better films but those two aren't as popular as Avengers/Spider-Man/Iron Man/Wolverine yet. Won't be the first time a good CB movie underperformed at the box office - see X-Men: First Class.

I think she looked cool in the trailer.

“Vanessa Kirby on ‘THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS:’ "It will be a completely different chapter from the previous ones, much more daring: seeing it you will [make you] understand why. Interpreting it was exciting, we all had a lot of fun on the set, I believe and hope that the audience will notice it.”

I think she looked cool in the trailer.
She had two cool shots, but showing a glimpse of how powerful she is can go a long way to winning people over.

The General audience doesn't really know enough to care whether it's Norrin or not. Give them a cool and interesting character then they will be on board.

Good point. If First Steps and/or Thunderbolts get the reception of First Class I would consider it a success ultimately.

First Class underperformed but it's one of the best X-Men film done and is pretty highly regarded today. Hopefully one of them does at least.

It will be difficult based on where the MCU is today and where we are culturally.

The recent trailer does a good job of showing the familial aspect of the Fantastic Four. Which, in my opinion, the others never did.

Captain America: Brave New World only earned $200 million domestically and 415 million worldwide, with very little competition. I think its safe that Fantastic 4 and Thunderbolts won't open as huge as Brave New World - $100 million in 4 days domestically. Worldwide, who knows. We can't count on China numbers anymore.

Fantastic 4: First Steps is opening in the same month as Superman and Jurassic World. At this point, the movie having a better 2nd weekend drop, is the only thing that I can see it doing better than Brave New World's box office run. I feel like Marvel Studios is back to those days, when not every new movie isn't a guaranteed hit and they have to prove themselves through good reception (Captain America 1, Thor, Ant-Man), and this doesn't have the same build up as the first MCU movie for Spider-Man, Black Panther and Captain Marvel.

I don't expect Norrin to show up in this movie (other then as part of her backstory if they get into that)

as this is an alternate universe where events played out differently...
(where she became the Surfer instead)

but, it does leave room for him to be the Surfer of main universe

Releasing 3 MCU movies within 6 months is also asking a lot $$$ out of the audience.
I mean, not really. Plus that’s assuming that everyone goes to all 3. I skipped BNW due to the reviews, and I’ll do the exact same with FF and Thunderbolts if they also miss. There are lots of options for movies this summer, and I’ll gladly pay for them all if they’re good.

3 movies in 6 months is demanding the super fans to spend money on tickets, and I meant super fans who can't wait for streaming. The rest, the general public who aren't as invested would likely skip and say "another Marvel movie? I just watched one recently" and Disney should avoid that becoming a habit, because the numbers are just going to keep decreasing out of disinterest to the franchise. With streaming, price inflation in general and box office numbers already peaking in 2019, I really don't think its the best for this franchise to continue to pump out the same amount of movies like it is still 2017. Its not especially when they also have MCU shows which could be taking some shine from these new MCU movies.

Families are more discerning than individuals when one trip to the theater costs $60-$80 (tickets + drinks + food) depending on how many kids you got and where you live. That's Disney asking for $180-$240 a year just for those three MCU movies for families and not counting any other movies or studios.

A Disney+ subscription costs:
$160/y annual premium
$16/m premium ($192/y)
$10/m basic ($120/y)

A Disney+ subscription service is a much better option. I just watched Moana 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King back to back this month.

The cost of cinema tickets, at least at the 2 or 3 I go to locally have nearly doubled in the last 4 or 5 years.

For your standard sort of seat you're talking £7.50 & there's a few places like Odeon for example that have Premium & Premium+ type seats that cost more because they're in 'better' spots, more leg room & more comfortable seats. I think they go up to £12.50 if you wanted those.

Tickets used to be £4.50 & there was a cinema in particular had specials on Tuesday's for £3. It doesn't sound like much of a rise, but when you're buying a couple of tickets as well as maybe some snacks it's not long adding up.

No matter how bad the economy is (even in one as horrid as this), I've noticed that people will still spend their money on three things: alcohol, sex and entertainment.

People will go to these movies.
