Fantastic Four: First Steps General News & Discussion Thread (TAG SPOILERS)

No matter how bad the economy is (even in one as horrid as this), I've noticed that people will still spend their money on three things: alcohol, sex and entertainment.

People will go to these movies.
Yes but is it enough to greenlit sequels? People still watched Snow White and yet it is considered as a box office bomb.

Fantastic 4 needs to make the Disney executives happy if we want to see a sequel and 3quel in the future.

While this is true, extra money you have for things like this doesn't go anywhere near as far & when cinema isn't the only form of entertainment available, as well as being costly particularly for families, well there's no doubt that's a contributing factor in the declining attendance in cinema in recent years.

Post pandemic, I skipped a lot of movies because they are available in streaming. I only make exception to movies I'm very invested or waited years to come out. I watched Mufasa, Moana 2, Wicked, Companion and Bridget Jones 4 for the first time this month. I would have spent 36 American dollars for 5 tickets (if my calculations are right) if I saw those 5 movies in the cinemas. A monthly Netflix/Disney subscription fee (combined) costs less than 10 dollars from where I live and I can cancel at any moment for the next month's fee.

I think a lot of people are now skipping these movies because of streaming and I don't see Disney trying to combat that, when you see them advertising their big movies when they are now in Disney+. Youtube ads, social media ads.

Just for context for people outside the US, have ticket prices gone up?

Yup. Every year the ticket prices from I live go up. But the increase when cinemas returned in November 2021, was huge compare to when cinemas was closed in March 2020.

Some cinemas are a bit cheaper, about 3 dollars but those aren't the best cinemas in the city.

Those were standard ticket prices. My ticket for Atmos screening of Brave New World is also more expensive, compare to the price in that picture.

The cheapest movie tickets I can find for Thunderbolts right now (non-matinee) within 20 miles of my house are 14$ per ticket at a very s***ty theater

The closest theater, an AMC, is $25 per

Holy crap, where do you live? My local AMC is $9.25 for non-matinee.

North Jersey/ NY Metro area, gotta love it

Doesn't help that the AMC has no normal theaters, it's all Imax or real3d or Dolby Cinema or "Laser at AMC" whatever the hell that is

Families are more discerning than individuals when one trip to the theater costs $60-$80 (tickets + drinks + food) depending on how many kids you got and where you live. That's Disney asking for $180-$240 a year just for those three MCU movies for families and not counting any other movies or studios.

A Disney+ subscription costs:
$160/y annual premium
$16/m premium ($192/y)
$10/m basic ($120/y)
Mickey Mouse isn’t holding a gun to their head and saying “SEE OUR MARVEL MOVIES AND BUY EXPENSIVE THEATER COMBOS”.

Most rational, reasonable parents will choose 1 or 2 of those movies, and wait for the remainder to hit streaming.

If you look at all 3 movies, I would be shocked if parents didn’t lean towards BNW and Fantastic 4 over Thunderbolts.

And this is coming from someone who has kids.

Fantastic 4 definitely looks way family friendly than Thunderbolts*

Will be interesting to see how the Thunderbolts* movie performs this week and how it impacts The Fantastic 4: First Steps.
