Fantastic Four General News & Discussion Thread (TAG SPOILERS)

‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Trailer Clears 202M Views In 24 Hours, Best For A Marvel Studios Non-Sequel

Per Deadline, that’s the most views a non-sequel Marvel Studios film has ever received. It comes in third place overall for all Marvel Studios movies, following Deadpool & Wolverine (365 million) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (335 million).

That means The Fantastic Four: First Steps is likely going to be a huge, money-making hit, as Deadpool & Wolverine made $1.3 billion at the global box office while Spider-Man: No Way Home ended its theatrical run with $1.95 billion.
This is simply awesome news and portends for a potentially really successful summer blockbuster.

Tonal wise, this seems okay for Fantastic Four, although it does remind of the MCU Spider-Man first two movies. Personally, I just didn't like Homecoming or Far From Home that much, well, not that much at all really. I do like Tom Holland. That wasn't the problem. For me, it was the tone. There was too much comedy. Spider-Man: Homecoming was practically a comedy which it shouldn't be. It sucked out all of the seriousness of its two predecessors, and I really didn't like it. For Thor, I think comedy works, just maybe not over-the-top like Love and Thunder, but to me, Thor was always the funnier superhero, even while being involuntarily funny.

That aside, not only did the tone of the MCU Spider-Man films bother me, but I also got tired of the new costume porn, if you will. They were constantly upgrading the Spider-Man suits. In Far From Home, Spider-Man had a black stealth suit which felt like a punch in the gut because we weren't going to have a Spider-Man and Venom crossover, even if they likely do that in the future, it will feel redundant having already seen a black suited version of the suit...two, in fact. I kind of enjoyed Venom or even Sam Rami's Spider-Man 3 better to some degree--I mean not all of it, but aspects of it. And when you look at it, these tones by contrast, MCU Spider-Man felt too Disney themed. It feels like Venom wouldn't fit in this universe, but he should since he's part of the Spider-Man lore.

I admit I liked Far From Home slightly better than Homecoming even though I'm still not quite a fan on the whole. It had an interesting twist, but it was obvious for most Spider-Man fans and we all knew Mysterio was the villain. I did like No Way Home quite a bit despite being disappointed with the film's ending, but I was able to take this film more seriously than the first two MCU Spider-Man movies. I think the villains of the first two MCU Spider-Man films weren't that good or threatening like Green Goblin, Dr. Octopus, Sandman or Venom. Just my view.

In conclusion, I don't think all the MCU films need to be comedies (as of now or since Joss Whedon). Speaking of which, I miss when The Hulk was actually taken seriously even though I loved Thor: Ragnorak, but to me, Smart Hulk is a joke. For Fantastic Four, I think a lighter tone works. For Spider-Man, I don't think it works. The high school comedy...just flat-out was bad to me. For F4, a lighter tone I think works but it should have some ground. Even in the 2005 original Fantastic Four, it was very light but they had a dark villain and I thought it was pretty good. Dr. Doom was dark and imposing. I thought the film had a good balance with the humor, whereas Spider-Man didn't.
I think the light tone of the teaser was intentional to appeal to as many people as possible including families, but not necessarily indicative of what we'll get.

I really can't reasonably conceive of a film that includes Galactus being light. There will be comedy and flippancy as per usual, but not in regards Galactus and the overall story. Galactus is meant to intimidate, even kids. You can't compromise on that.

I’m not sure I’d say it had a light tone. Around halfway through, the music and mood seem to turn ominous. Sue and Reed seem to be having a fairly serious discussion, and we have the visual of Ben looking alone and depressed intercut with that.

When Sue mentions being able to handle anything “life throws at us” we see a sky lit up with cascading meteors? Fireballs? Then John Malkovich and Galactus’ shadow all seeming menacing, and when she finishes with “as a family”, it almost seems she’s on the verge of tears.

It’s hard to do a lot in such a brief clip, and while it seemed there was some fun, that fun seemed tempered with menace.

At least that’s what it felt like to me.🤷‍♂️

I wouldn't take these views as a great sign, because from Marvel Studios clearly sent the video as a YouTube ad as I encountered the trailer as an ad. Sony/Paramount do this a lot.

But I'll take any promo for this succeed in July. I want a F4 trilogy. But even with Disney/Marvel Studios, that isn't guaranteed. I just can't at the thought of another one/done F4 film or a F4 duology. When Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman did so well at the box office, I thought they were guaranteed for a trilogy.

All the major studios do that for their big blockbusters.

And I think that is combined for all the social media the trailer was released on, not just Youtube.

I know its just not YouTube as it doesn't even have 50 million views there. If there's paid views (ads) for the trailer in YouTube, then it could happen to other social media network as well. I know IG does that too even to accounts that I already follow.

these views aren't really organic when the trailer was released as an online ad. And online ads have been worse in the last five years so its not really a good metric for success.

Of course they also ran the trailer as ad. That's the whole point.

What point are you talking about, because I read that Deadline article above and they didn't mention any paid ads that could have boosted that number. Its not really that impressive. We don't know how much from 202 million views without from the ads (that automatically played the trailer).

And @JP I wasn't surprised they promoted the film because they have to.

Ads or not, the point is there's massive anticipation for this film. And that's gotta be reassuring for Feige, Shakman, and Co. Hell, it should be reassuring for us.

For many months now, so many of us fans have been dreading that the FF brand was irreparably damaged by the box office poison from the previous FOX films. These huge view numbers prove that Marvel may indeed have a major hit on their hands. It doesn't matter if the views are coming from organic sources via YouTube or ads because if there wasn't interest, people wouldn't click.

And with the Avengers all but disbanded, and 3/4 of the MCU's original "fab four" dead or retired (Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man, Chris Evans' Captain America and Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther), audiences are clearly thirsting for a new flagship team for the Marvel franchise. The Fantastic Four may be it, and these millions of views show people are here for it.

Does anyone think that we'll see Thing without a shirt...or shirtless? Sounds weird when you put it that way, but I always preferred him just wearing shorts. Not that I mind the shirt, but sill prefer more orange.
I haven't seen the previous f4 films in a long time and after reading your post, I didn't notice this is actually the first film, he isn't shirtless. For this film, I prefer if he wears a shirt for a change.

It doesn't matter.

The point is to reach as many people as possible. Trailers are ADvertisement for upcoming movies.

Use some common sense, person.

I hope they still release a tv spot or something during the Superbowl. It would be a big mistake to not promote the film at all during that event.
If its a 30 or 60 seconds tv spot, I hope they add new footage.

Since we are talking about trailer views, do y'all remember when movie trailers used to be huge on YouTube? And when I say huge I mean 100m+ views for a single film. I feel like Tiktok has probably taken away YouTube views for the past few years.

My partner (who's just gotten into the MCU with me) and I enjoyed the trailer and are excited to see it. We loved the 60s/futuristic aesthetic, and I particularly liked Thing, whose design is perfect. As for the voice, it wasn't what I expected. When I read the comics, I imagine the Thing's voice as a gravely version of his voice as Ben, but keeping his voice (presumably) the same after his transformation is an interesting move. I think it's meant to highlight his humanity. Even though it was a short clip, I can see Vanessa and Pedro's strong chemistry as Sue and Reed. The only thing I'm still nitpicky on is Pedro's stache/struggle beard, but he sounds and acts like Reed. Overall, this movie looks like it'll be great. A new era for the MCU.

Too much to bare? Too orange for you? :tearsofjoy:

Its a combination of being a bit bare, and an extra detail to differentiate it from the previous films. I don't know why Thing is usually shirtless when it comes to battle. I don't know if its the heat or battle outfits are just to small for him. But I can't really name a lot of superheroes who go to battle/missions shirtless.

I suspect Ben is largely practical - with a big guy wearing a suit and then the hands and face animated.

And that’s probably part of the reason he has such a full suit.
