February 2009 Solicitations

Maybe that's what "has progressed" means. v:Ov

The actual Trinity are still not in Trinity by February? I don't know if that's a good thing. In fact I'll just go ahead and say that it's not.

JSA looks interesting but I'm really not hoping for that much at this point.

Well, the trinity seem to loom large over the events of their book by February, at least. Better than the current status quo. Personally, I'm looking at Trinity as "DC Universe Weekly" and I'm enjoying it, but I can see why people would be disappointed that a book called Trinity doesn't involve the trinity.

As for JSA, I'm kind of looking forward to it. The Marvel family may have been f***ed up left and right for the past few years, but this arc seems to center on Black Adam, the best of the Marvel family, and Johns has done pretty well by the Marvel family so far. If anybody can restore them to their former glory--or at least put them back on the map as anything other than ******ed turncoat failures with a cloud of mediocrity clinging to them like flies around Pigpen--it might just be Johns.

That's how I'm looking at Trinity too. It's a great magnifying lens into THE DCU and its characters in the way that 52 was. I don't think the disappointment stems entirely from the fact that the Trinity hasn't been appearing, I think a big part of it is that there wasn't really all that much done with them even when they were appearing. And I mean done with them character-wise, not "LOOK AT THE COSMIC DESTINY SHENANIGANS." Busiek's superb writing and dialogue and Bagley's art makes this practically imperceptible, but when you look back at the first half of this series, almost nothing has been done with Batman or Wonder Woman's characters. Superman's really the only one who had some cool character revelations in the Crime Syndicate subplot, and that was just a few issues.

Along with my recent massive disappointment in JSA, I worry about an arc focused on Black Adam and Isis in that there's nothing wrong with Black Adam and Isis at the moment. They're awesome, they're doing great. It's Billy, Freddy, and Mary that don't work right now. I'm sure they're be satisfactorily handled, but they're really begging for a "Captain Marvel: Rebirth" here, and not "JSA vs Black Adam, round 8!"

DiDio's newsarama interview was actually very informative, at least in regards to how things look from DC's perspective. He gives a pretty candid analysis of the Marvels' situation at DC at the moment.
18) Speaking of Black Adam and the Marvel Family as a whole – we did have a question that came in to Newsarama asking us to ask you if we had a chance, about the Marvel Family and how the treatments they’ve had over the last few years seems to have left them fractured and unfamiliar to long-time fans...are they going to be pulled back toward at least a little...better known ground?

DD: Here’s the thing – the Marvel Family interpretation in regards to what most people want to see – the CC Beck version of Captain Marvel and the world of Fawcett City does not interact well with the rest of the DC Universe. Tonality-wise, it just doesn’t work. It’s a much lighter, much more open style than what’s going on in the DCU. We’ve been working –if you noticed – we’ve moved Billy out of the equation, he’s on the Rock of Eternity, and the characters that we’ve been working with the most have been Freddie and Mary, because we felt there was more character there to address. Freddie’s origin was a lot darker...Mary’s origin was something off to the side. A lot of people also point to the Jerry Ordway stuff, which is really wonderful material, but again, tonality wise, we were looking for a way to bring the Marvel Family into the DCU as it was operating.

That being said, one of the reasons we created Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam was because we wanted to capture the special magic, wonder and heart of those characters. We thought we achieved that quite well with the Mike Kunkel stuff. I wish it was coming out little bit faster to be frank, but I think that captures a lot of the tone that people remember from Captain Marvel.

But where it stands right now is that we’re finding Captain Marvel’s place in the DCU – Geoff has done a wonderful job in bringing all the aspects of Marvel’s family – especially the Black Adam side – back. The thing about the Captain Marvel Universe is that we’ve mined it for so much richness – from Sivana to Black Adam to Mary Marvel to Freddie to Shazam himself. Billy hasn’t been part of that equation, and that’s something we’re working on right now – to make him part of that equation again. And some of that will be addressed in Geoff’s Black Adam story coming up in Justice Society.
I appreciate him not bull****ting, but I find his logic illogical nonetheless. You're so sure that the world of Fawcett doesn't interact well with the rest of the DCU? When was the last time you even tried it? We haven't seen Fawcett City for years! I appreciate DiDio having instincts about these things, but the complete disconnect between what he thinks readers want and what readers really want has been so damned frustrating.

I know what you mean about Billy. I thought Johns put the Marvel family back on the map when he introduced Billy as a probationary officer for a trying to reform Black Adam when he joined the JSA. I also liked the idea of Captain Marvel on JSA, then having KC Superman on the team instead.

We did see a glimpse of Fawcett city in Black Adam: The Dark Age. When Teth stopped by Fawcett city and found the new "Phrase" to become Black Adam. It was on a few pages he was in town. I don't completely agree with DD about saying you can't work with the town.

I'm glad Mary marvel is getting exposure, but I feel like they should focus on Billy more. I thought the idea of a kid transforming into a Superman like character is awesome and original. And it made him unique that he still was a kid even though he was powerful. It's a shame he is tied to the rock of Eternity as "Marvel." If they were to free him from that, you would then have too many Marvels flying around, kind of like the situation with Superman and Kc Superman. They still haven't done anything with Freddy yet, even though he is suppose to be part of Robinson's justice league.

DiDio's just spouting nonsense there. If he wants to see how the tonality of a true-to-its-canon Fawcett City would work, he should turn to the animated stuff. Look at Billy's characterization in "Clash" from JLU and he's perfect--his naivete is noted and appreciated by the other Leaguers because they come from such dark worlds. Even Batman can't help liking him. What's wrong with doing the same in the DC universe proper? The entire world doesn't have to be doom and gloom all the time--Fawcett could be its one little oasis of general decency.

And, you know, it doesn't even have to be at the level of Billy Batson and the Power of Shazam--which, while I appreciate the effort at shining a little more light on the Marvels, is always going to be apocryphal and largely ignored by the main DC readership. Light and fun doesn't have to equal goofy kids' fodder. It's amazing to me that DiDio can't see that.

I'm disappointed that Johns/Frank was not attached to the Feb. issue of Action Comics.
Is Johns swapping Superman titles with Robinson soon?

Really looking forward to the Agent Orange storyline in Green Lantern.

kind of intrigued by the upcoming Black Adam/Isis storyline in JSA.
I hope it is done well.

The Nightwing solicitation seems to have some pretty blatant spoilers about the ending of RIP.

Yeah. No joke. Who writes these things?

Who cares? I'd prefer a little spoilage rather than Marvel's stupid "CLASSIFIED" solicitations.

Not really for RIP, since Bruce Wayne as Batman shows up in Final Crisis, and Morrison has said Final Crisis comes after RIP. And it just says "Batman is dead", which has been the metaphor for this whole event.

Strikes me as being vaguely worded (or else, badly written); regardless, the FC thing remains. Now, I suppose he could kick the bucket there.

My purchases:

Booster Gold #17 - We've already done a Flash guest spot, but whatever; I'll be interested to see where Jurgens plans to take this series. It's neat symmetry for him to end up in charge again.

Green Lantern #39 - The rollout of the rainbow corps continues; the Sinestro Corps was a fantastic innovation, but the others have yet to really convey that level of gamechanging-ness.

Northlanders #15 - I had originally planned to drop this, but it got left on my pull list, and the first issue of the new arc was pretty good, so why not?

Secret Six #6 - Junior is still not much of villain, but we'll see; this has been enjoyable so far, though I'm not as in-love with the Six as many are.

Wonder Woman #29 - Not Lopresti's strongest cover, I must say; the rest looks fine, though. Also:

One particular attack could spell the end of the Department of Metahuman Affairs

Don't be a tease, stupid promo people.

That WW cover is just epic bad. And I don't mean the good sort of bad, I mean bad. Like sucks.

What are these "Origins and Omens" things about?

Yeah that was pretty ugly. Like a Liefeld drawing minus the part where at least your average hyperhormonal 13 year old can still find it appealing.

I don't understand the point of brining Adventure Comics back and not continuing the numbering.

ROBIN #183
Written by Fabian Nicieza
Art and cover by Freddie E. Williams II
A “Batman: Last Rites” tie-in and featuring an “Origins and Omens” backup story! Gotham City has found a new hero and his name is Robin – but with a battle for Batman's cowl looming, is Tim Drake ready to become something more? Guest-starring Jason Todd and Lady Shiva. And don’t worry, this final issue doesn’t mark the end of Robin – it’s just the start of an all-new beginning!
FINAL ISSUE

awsome!:woot:

I'm interested in the Batman stuff, I want to see what's going to end up happening. I'm guessing Dick Grayson will be the next Batman.

I'm downright excited for Outsiders. That book has been a cluster**** since inception and now we're getting Tomasi who does a damn good job on everything he does IMO. Although it seems like Black Lightning is leaving the Justice League for the Outsiders. Kinda odd though, I pegged him to be more for Robinson's Justice League if he ever left Justice League of America than going back to the Outsiders. And who the hell is that wierd looking guy.

Is that Owlman???

Or Nightowl? What the heck? I'll be getting that fo sho.

Anybody else think REBELS sounds kind of cool? I always liked Vril Dox, Jr.

LOL i still dont believe that book is real. have they advertised for it yet?

That DC Direct Creeper figure looks pretty good. Depending on how well his scale compares to my other DC figs, I'll probably get him.

They advertise for it in the DC Nation page of about half of DC's books right now with a picture of Hal and Ollie with the words "under construction" at the bottom. The other half of DC's comics have Van Sciver's promo picture of Barry from Rebirth with the same "under construction" thing at the bottom.

Everytime these *****es come out, it makes me want to commit seppuku.
