I saw this book on the shelves and quickly glanced through it. It looks great, but it's fifteen bucks, is it worth it?

It's alright. I bought it and I don't know if I'd say it was worth my money. The art is terrible IMO. I can't beleive someone like that got hired for Marvel. The story is alright. The whole thing is supposed to be an exploration of the FF's psyche during the first few issues of FF. It does an alright job of that, except they add a whole new subplot about this mutated scientist and his "end of the world" scheme. If you saw it for five bucks used or at your library it wouldn't hurt to get this, but for fifteen bucks it's a stretch.

I was surprised to be so underwhelmed by this. I didn't even finish buying the mini-series.
Joe Casey unquestionably understands classic FF and Kirby. Just look at his out-of-this-world Godland series for Image. Not to mention the very Kirby-esque "Ben 10" series he co-created and continues to produce for Cartoon Network:

But this whole thing felt forced and unnecessary to me.Perhaps if the art had felt more appropriate to the era represented. I dunno.

I'd still love to see Casey work on the regular FF book, but the art's gotta be Kirby-esque.
