Kevin Munroe, the writer/director of TMNT, has stated several times that the new film will accept the first film and "aspects" of the second as canon. I never quite understood what was meant by that, so I asked Murphy from Mirage Comics (Editor of Tales of the TMNT) and he asked Munroe directly.

Here's Munroe's response:

"I'd say the answer to the question is that the things acknowledged from 2 are that Shredder is dead, the turtles discovered TCRI... and that Vanilla Ice is dead. I would say, tho, that the film mostly follows the 1st, and has 'nods' to the 2nd and 3rd for sentimental reasons."

This helps clear things up significantly. So pretty much it's the first film + the TMNT's knowledge of TCRI. So I can sleep better knowing that I can basically disregard the awful second film, lol.

Murphy is now a poster over at the Technodrome Forums http://forums.thetechnodrome.com and he seems willing to answer any questions posted.

Its TGRI

In the comics it was TCRI and Munroe listed it as TCRI. Could be a typo on his part, or it could be a little retconning especially since much of the 2nd film will be ignored continuity wise.

I always knew that Vanilla Ice was trouble.

What about Master Tetsu?:o

I always he assumed he was dead after Casey hit him full force in the head with a golf club (again I have no respect for the second film so I could care less about his appearance in it).

It was changed to TGRI for the second film because they replaced "cosmic" with "global" to remove the alien aspect of the story. If they're smart, they'll change it back to TCRI for the new film.

I'm sure they will. They are trying, and rightfully so, to distance themselves from the two sequels.

Isn't it a bit concerning that he spelt though as tho?

What is TCRI?

I saw all of the movies, but don't remember this...was it the ooze?

I would love to see them acknowledge the Turtle Rap in the movie. Just have a stereo playing, it switches to the song, and Ralph slices the stereo with his katanna to stop it. :woot:

In the comics, and vicariously the new cartoon, TCRI is a front company run by Utroms, and the ooze is waste product from a teleporter, In the movies, it was changed to TGRI, as Spider-Ham said, because the subplot with Perry as an Utrom was dropped. It was never explained what the ooze really was in the movies, except that there was a lot of it being developed, despite nobody knowing what it was for.

Yeah, and Raph uses sais, not katanas.

But then, maybe this Ralph person does use a katana. I wouldn't know. :cwink: :p

So pretty much the movie is "Superman Returns"-Turtle style then?

Hmm...this should be interesting because to me "Superman Returns" was an "ok" movie but it was too much of prequel-sequel where it works in the film's continuity but parts just don't feel right or up to speed which is what I fear with this movie.

I hate the CGI-human designs. Too Disneyish for my tastes, but the Turtles and Splinter I think are great. Just wish we could get the old actors and voicecast back.

I don't know I'm still at an 8.5 on liking this movie.

That seems like a reasonable explaination; thanks, Aztec & Mr. Munroe.

They seem to be going the SUPERMAN RETURNS route, which I don't mind, because it set the tone that a movie can be part of a series and yet not slavishly have to acknowledge past sequals that are almost universally panned; SUPERMAN III & IV and TMNT III in particular. Especially when you have characters that you presume don't need to be reintroduced in terms of origins; as the Turtles have had a new cartoon show for the past 3-4 years, they're assuming their target audience knows who they are. And they assume that older audiences have seen those older movies too (which have aired countless times on cable & network TV and have been available on VHS & DVD for years, in fact over a decade in terms of VHS).

I was never big on Tatsu, maybe he retired or something. ;)

Plus, what many fans disliked about SUPERMAN RETURNS was that it was ploddy in pace and had little action for their buck; I doubt a TMNT film will be lacking in action, and is seems on pace to be more "dark" than the last two films were. So I'm expecting good things here.

I wouldn't mind if Hun replaced Tatsu. Hun's much cooler than Tatsu IMO.
