Now that FF12 has finally released over here, I was wondering what anybodies initial thoughts were?

Any other nationalitys welcome also.

Initially, my thoughts are mixed. The graphics are solid in a Vargrant Story style, and the hi res textures are great.

The new camera is good, and the olde style is different compared to newer FFs.

The fighting style is also different, and I think the licence board will be a step up from the sphere grid of the last real FF.

But, with the fighting style supposedly being different, with added movement in between attacks, I still find the combat to be turn based. For example, I hit a Cactuar, and 'run' off for my bar to refill, but automatically I'm hit with a 'ram' attack despite being mile away.

Does this change? or Is the free roam combat merely a pretty face for the same gameplay?

Overall, I like it, but I'm not blown away. YET.

Seems that no=one else has bought the game then........

Yeah right. Come on guys!

I bought it in Australia but when I came back from EB my PS2 kicked the bucket. I should have it back in the next couple of days.

Yeah, I'd like to hear more about it too. I want to buy it but I'm still trying to complete Kingdom Hearts. i dont wanna start another game until I've done with that.

Meh I really want to, but I have a damned degree to finish in the next couple of months, and it's such a big game. I'm going to have to hold off until summer I think.

From what i've heard, I don't think i'd enjoy it very much. Not a lot of focus on the characters of relationships between said characters. That was one of the series' strongest points, IMO.

Well for those still waiting or busy, since I started the thread, I've since become hooked.

Yes, the game does lack a real emotion core (at the moment), but the new gameplay, once acclimated is top notch.

The story is basically a ripoff of Star Wars thus far, but the overall tone and feel of the game works.

Good luck with the degree Avelanche, what're you doing? You're gonna have some catching up to do with this and GoW2.

I'm in the third year of my law degree. I think I'm definately going to have to give FFXII and GoW2 a miss until after the exams are over. I'm too easily distracted from the work I'm supposed to be doing, and having those two games around is a sure fire way for me to not do as well as I should.

I've waited about two years for FFXII. Another few months won't do me any harm.

well I think most people have played it and have posted in the other FFXII thread. I have been playing this for 5 MONTHS and still not done. Thats over 110 hours. Im at the last part and Im thinking of not doing the rest of the sidequests and just beating the game bc I need to move on to other stuff. I'll go back to the extras later

After playing about 25 hours its safe to say this is a great game. The game play reminds me heaps of Vagrant Story, which is no suprise considering the guy behind that game came over and helped on FF12.

I thought it was Vagrant Story style too.

I've missed the Ultimate Weapon already, due to my greed. Whilst I do love the game, I doubt I'll replay it again for the extras like FF7-10.

Once I'm done, I'm moving on to GoW2, Mercenaries and The Thing.

I never played Vagrant Story so I cant comment on the gameplay or story but the artistic style of the game looks like that game.

Well, visually, there are great similarities, the dungeons and medieval tone are the same, but the main gameplay factor is the combat.

In Vagrant Story (as far as I can remember) when you slect attack, time stops and you get a grid/sphere which shows your reach. This increases with projectile weapons, and you could also select individual body parts.

It was more similar than it sounds there I think.

the graphics are really good, the story atm seems to lack twists. and normally you dont know who the final boss is going to be but ive known since i first started playing it

oh and the lack of shiva and the other summons is a bummer... i mean how could they make them into air ships ¬_¬

The summons will be back. The only reason they weren't in this game was because it was based on a world already created in the Final Fantasy universe which pre-dated the summons we know and love.

I hope to see them in FFXIII.

Summons are in this game; they are just called Espers

what he means are the more memorable, Ifrit, Shiva, Bahamut, Leviathan, Odin etc, rather than the fairly forgettable ones of 12.

Yup, sorry, should have clarified. The Espers aren't the summons that the modern Final Fantasy audience has grown to love. There are a couple that look interesting enough, but none that rival classics such as Shiva and Bahamut.

You know, I've played FF6-12 (except for 11), but never FF Tactics.

Which is better?
