Just curious as to whether anyone has heard anything new. I read the book and it was excellent. My grandfather was in Iwo Jima, so I think its about time some type of film tribute be paid to those guys. Its being directed by Clint Eastwood, and produced by Stephen Spielberg. I think it's slated for a February release. That last thing I heard about it was that Paul Walker was suppose to be in it. :(

Oscar buzz surrounding this film already, mainly due to Eastwood & Speilberg's involvement no doubt.

Never in a million years will they be able to translate the true horror of that battle realistically onto film. The best Eastwood can do is to suggest how it was. Iwo was a real meatgrinder and does not lend itself to a conventional, flowing narrative approach--chaos, artillery constantly going off and guys getting chewed up and blown into pieces. And those countless acts of heroism and supreme sacrifce will no doubt be given short shrift. One can only hope for the best. I hear Clint also wants to do a film of the battle from the Japanese point of view.

Im seeing it because Clint is a genius and I love everything he does (at least of what I've seen). Who'd a guess Blondie/Dirty Harry would be a cinematic genius

having great screenwriters helps.

Bumping this up as I think we're about to get some promos for it.

Can't wait. I'm very fascinated with WW2, and I hope Eastwood brings something new and original to the table while still making the film technically brilliant a'la SPR and BoB.

In a stroke of genius, he is also making a film from the Japanese side of Iwo Jima called Red Sun, Black Sand whose title reminds me of another one of his films called Black Heart, White Hunter. I liked the old title better : Lamps in the Wind.

It'll be interesting to see a soldier get killed in one movie, and then in the other movie we see his whole story up to that point.

I'm looking forward to this film so much. I just hope it shows some of the horror. ButEastwood and Speilberg are behind it so it should rock hard.
