Here's a story about the Flash (DC Comics) dealing with a pit of hell and trying to use his terrific speed to save the world from the abominable bottomless pit of darkness.

I'm using Barry Allen's Flash, since he's a founding member of the Justice League of America!

Barry Allen woke up from a summertime nap and found himself on a strange planet where there were only vines and eerie sounds. Barry/Flash thought he was dreaming but considered the possibility that Lex Luthor, member of the evil Legion of Doom had developed some kind of teleportation telekinetic device and used it to transport Flash to this strange planet. Flash was covered in a strange green light which destabilized his energy, and of course, there were vines crawling around his legs and around his arms.

As the vines pulled Flash into a terrible hole in the center of the planet, Flash saw visions of souls in purgatory, aching to crawl out. Barry/Flash realized that this hole was some kind of 'dreamscape black-hole' created by the eerie psychokinetic energy on this strange planet. "If a normal black hole is a place of nothingness, perhaps this hallucinatory hole is some kind of place of dream-inversion!" Barry/Flash thought to himself.

Flash considered the possibility that to crawl out of this metaphysical 'hole' of hell, he would have to imagine great and beautiful things, things that made him unbelievably happy and comfortable and then use the energy gained from that mental glee to energize his body long enough to zoom out of that hole and evade the vines keeping them with elastic strength. Flash performed the mental act and then energized himself and zoomed out of the hole. When he got out, he immediately realized he was back on Earth. Barry/Flash was so exhausted he went unconscious.

When Flash awoke, he found himself in the lair of Lex Luthor.

LEX: Welcome back to Earth, Flash...
BARRY: You sent me to an abominable planet, Luthor!
LEX: You managed to escape the pit of darkness from that planet.
BARRY: No thanks to those creepy vines or the nightmares you spawned!
LEX: Relax, Flash. I'm here to ask you to be my 'messenger.'
BARRY: I have no interest in becoming your 'evil employee,' Luthor.
LEX: Your experience in that pit of hell makes you a 'teacher of darkness.'
BARRY: I have no interest in 'teaching' people about an eerie hole of hell!
LEX: Would you rather go back and be a 'minion' of light and forget the hole?
BARRY: I will tell my friends at the Justice League about that hole...
LEX: Your friends at the JLA will wonder how much you appreciate 'evil.'
BARRY: Why? Because I have 'firsthand experience' in that hell-hole?
LEX: Precisely, Flash. Work with me and we'll analyze darkness together!
BARRY: So tempting, Luthor, but the JLA knows I'm their consultant only.
LEX: The best view of heaven is from hell, Flash, and we can be allies.
BARRY: That hell-hole simply taught me that hope never dies...
LEX: Yet, just imagine if a 'regular Joe' ended up in that hell-hole!
BARRY: Very clever, Luthor, but I think the JLA wants me to conquer vanity.
