Superman Returns flight demo sequence & minor visual effects shots

Like I said. I had just come back from the theater and I was amazed that it wasn't the train wreck that I thought it was going to be at first. Then it took a few hours of thinking about it and I started seeing all of the plot holes, etc, and I started getting pissed. Like the absurdity of Lex's plan. Teh fact that Supes was lifting up a landmass full of Kryptonite when he was powerless standing on it minutes before. Teh fact that he had a piece of kryptonite in him. The fact that Richard was the hero of the movie. That Superman didn't have many lines. That it was really no fun. That they just stole pages of dialog from STM. All of the Christ references. I realized it was a train wreck. As far as the wanting to see it on IMAX, I did at that second, but the next day, after realizing it was a train wreck, I didn't want to see it again at all anymore.

It doesn't take me that long to figure out if I like a movie or not, you find these plotholes and problems when you're watching the movie. At least I do, but I digress...

It's just refreshing to see your review...:cwink:

God you guys are making such a big damn deal out of this. When I first came out of the theater I thought it was just okay. I was unhappy with a few things. I went out of the theater and at the front door there was a large group asking each other things like "what did Lex think he was going to do on a worthless piece of rock?" and "If his plan succeeded money would be no good" and "All they were doing was playing cards".

I got back to my office about 15 minutes later and quickly typed the review, then went back to work on a effects shot I was rendering while I was at the theater. I started thinking about what the crowd in front of the theater was saying and thought about it. And I started hating the movie. As I started thinking more and more about the plot holes, like the fact that if Superman left earth and came back here he woudl have been gone for double the time it took to get here as a baby, which in the laws of physicsm (and established by Jor-El in STM) was "...many thousands of your years". I got pissed off about that.

I threw in a movie while I was working and, even though it isn't the greates movie in the world, and made for 1/10th the budget SR had 5 years ago, it had much more action, and a hell of a lot more story. When the movie was done I thought about how much story was actually there. Then I looked at the other movies in my DVD collection at the office and started thinking about them, and they had a hell of a lot more story, even in a shorter running time, and look like what they cost.

So by the next day I was getting pretty upset at how much of a train wreck the film was. As the week went by I started thinking of other things wher the film failed, and how much was stolen from STM after I rewatched it the next day while working. I also saw exactly how much story and action it had with about the same running time that SR had. We go from Krypton, to Smallville, to the North Pole, the Metropolis, to California, and it told everything you needed to know about Superman. At the end you saw the story with improtant events of Superman's life, and it was a fullfilling story. Then you had him save a Lois and a helicopter, stop a cat burgler, bankrobbers, save a cat from a tree, and rescue Air Force One all in 10-15 minutes. Then you saw him chase a missle and throw one into space, and then stop all the things caused by the earthquake from the other missle. So much action and yet it still had so much story. And I started comparing it to SR and then I got really mad. So that is how it went.

Then when I saw it in IMAX (which I was forced to go) I saw all of the plot holes and really hated the movie. And without even talking to my cousin about it, after the movie, he started listing all the plot holes and problems with it. He also said "Why is it when villian;s have a superhero depowered they just don't shoot them and be done with it? Why do they have to drop them in the water? It was cool in Superman 1 as that was the first superhero film, but why don't they just shoot them? Why did he have to only stab him? Why not shoot him too?" He also had a major problem with him lifting something that minutes before in the film he was depowered standing on, especially when there were big huge things of Kryptonite coming out right next to him. He really thought they messed up on that

So I know you SR lovers are making a big deal out this because you guys can't stand people who don't liek that turd of a movie that you gusy love. But if you want to see how I feel about the film, go read my review after I fored myself to watch it on DVD in one of these threads.

Pickle. Your on my blocked list. I don't read any of your stuff. So it is stupid to reply to everything I post as I don't read anything you post. Don't you have better things to do with your time?

damn buggs, no offense...but you're like a magnet for forum drama, haha...

I have to give these guys a call when I make my movie.

If I don't reply to your posts, I feel like I haven't lived a full day.....Wait, but you'll never read this.

If Pickle replies to one of Buggs posts, but he is on the ignore list, does it make a sound? :wow: :wow: :wow:

they show all the cool stuff from matrix but they only show some demo flight and some colour correction? come on WB. show us how you made those complex shots that everyone is talking about. show us how you made those CGI capes.

That footage is owned by WB , not PLF. It will probably take a few years or so before you'll really get some big scenes like the stuff of the matrix movies.
I discovered the matrix Pre-Viz reels in 2005 , PLF finally posted that stuff. And the matrix sequels came out in '03. So don't expect WB do release that stuff any time soon.

Besides PLF was just the Pre-Viz studio who did minor work on the VFX. The studio that really handled the complex CG superman work was Sony ImageWorks. If i were you i'd check their website daily :cwink:

i agree matrix had nothing on the dvd about CGI and other effects. :o

NOTES : similar to MCG’s verson needs particles and ripple effect.

did anyone catch that ?

McG's version of the ripple effect

I thought that it was more inspired by the matrix movies. They had a similar ripple effect in Reloaded when a building exploded.

Nice spot patrickbateman.
The FlyBy crew had already previsualized and storyboarded almost the entire before McG left including a plane rescue sequence thats very similar to Singer's.I'm glad at least one idea from the aborted attempts made it into SR.

From Entertainment Weekly:

But Singer was intrigued by an idea that director-producer McG (mastermind of the Charlie's Angels movies) had developed when he was considering directing the new Superman film. (For an account of the production's many false starts, click here). McG and his team had worked out a storyboarded sequence in which Superman rescues Air Force One — an homage to a scene in the original 1978 Superman: The Movie where lightning destroys an engine on Air Force One and Superman (played by Christopher Reeve) guides the crippled craft to safety. Singer ultimately rejected reprising this presidential-plane idea, but he liked some of the imagery McG's crew had dreamed up. ''A certain amount of that lived forward into the Bryan Singer movie,'' says Stetson. ''Some of the shots in our sequence are taken directly from the McG previsualization.''

I love how you categorize people, "lovers" & "haters", some people didn't hate it as much as you, some people liked it, some people loved it. The funny part is that you formed your own opinion, wrote about it, then let other people's thoughts in the audience change your opinions.

Why did it take you so long to discover the "tributes" to the Donner movie's in SR? Seems like you are a big fan of the Donner movies?
