Hey, kids. I've haunted the Hype for awhile now, but never the Anime forums. I used to be like you, connected to what was new and kewl (like we used to say) in Japan. But I been out of touch now for a few years.

My question is, how can I be like that again? I mean, besides Naruto and Bleach, cause everybody watches them (with good reason, obviously), what else is out there that's brand new and rocks?

Feel free to include suggestions for J-Pop, or anything else you like from Japan. Websites that you use to stay on top of things would be appreciated as well.

Have you heard about Full Metal Alchemist yet?

and I don't know if you're looking for Manga as well, or just strictly Anime, but I can tell you about an amazings eries called Blade of the Immortal as well

Gantz-
Inuyasha-
Getbackers-
just to name a few. they can all get you hooked again.

please actually tell people about series and don't just list them for them :(

Gungrave ... great drama series about 2 best friends who join the mafia. It's been called the Goodfellas meet the Crow :up:

Blood+ ... A spin off of Blood the Last Vampire movie. It's not actually a sequel or prequel but it has the same character.

Azumanga Daioh ... A funny random anime about Japanese high school girls. Real funny ****.

Chrno Crusade ... Nuns with guns. Nuff said.

The Full Metal Panic series ... there's 3 different series & an OVA out for this. The 1st is all mech, the 2nd is all comedy & it's back to serious mech **** with the 3rd.

Samurai Deeper Kyo ... A great samurai series. Highly underrated.

Samurai Champloo ... A samurai series with an hip-hop mixture to it. Same ppl who made Cowboy Bebop made this.

Samurai 7 ... Based off the Japanese classic Seven Samurai. It's not as good as the movie but it's good in it's own rights. What seperates it from other Samurai series is that the samurai here are mechs. Not all of them but of good few them, mainly the Bandits.

Eyeshield 21 ... A comedy sports series. The sport being football, not futbol, but football. The downside, the sub release are real ... real .... slow. The series is at around 60 or 70 episodes while the subs are at 47. :(

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya ... A comedy series that follows this high school girl who has a thing for aliens, esper, time travelers ... basically **** that's out of the ordinary. The series is told in complete randomness.

Sousei No Aquarion ... great animation to this mech series. And very underrated.

Trinity Blood ... A vampire series. It's due to air on [AS] this fall or early next 2007.

Peacemaker Kurogane ... another highly underrated smaurai series.

R.O.D ... You should watch the OVA first then the tv series.

Monster ... One of the best drama/mystery series out.

here's some movies you should check out ...

The Place Promised in Our Early Days, Fullmetal Alchemist: The Conqueror of Shambala, Steamboy

and finally there's manga series to check out ....

Death Note.

Almost forgot about the J-music you were talking about.

You probably already know of L'arc en Ciel. They're mostly known for the theme song to Full Metal Alchemist titled Ready Steady Go! The leading singer Hyde has his own solo project going on as well. He has a theme song on the anime series Blood+.

There's FLOW whose known for the Naruto theme song Go! & Re:member. I have their Game album, which is real great. I just need to find the rest.

High and Mighty Color is being called the Japanese version of Evenesnce or however you spell it. I have all their albums, which is 2 :o Not really feeling the 2nd as much as I feel the 1st. I can play the 1st album from 1st to last track. It's that good.

a couple of others you should give a try ...

Orange Range, Kung Fu Generation, Bivattchee, SuperCar, Mika Nakashima, Sowelu, Home made kazoku, T.M.Revolution, Uverworld, Izawa Asami, Coolon ... probably more that I'm forgetting to mention.

Contrary to belief Digimon has several great mangas.
I'm hooked. Heres a link to all you need to know.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/digimon

Also Gantz is an anime/manga that has me hooked like an addict.
Kei Kurono and his childhood friend get killed in the beggining, but somehow the are transported to a mysterious room and are not dead. A strange being called"Gantz" has given them a second chance at life, but this time they play by Gantz rules. Chances of thier survival=00.1%

You can't go wrong with the classics.. I'm more of a classic guy, so sue me. So anything from the 80's and 90's that catches your eye. Go for i

Also, some goodies around

Medieval stuff

Berzerk is a good one if you are into the semi-gore and good story

Escaflowne is a combination of Shoujo(girl stuff, Sailor moon) and Shounen(boy stuff, Naruto, DBZ), pretty good fantasy/semi-steampunk. It's about a girl from earth and a boy from a place like Lord of the Rings... with Robots

Slayer. Female tomboyish sorceress. Fun. Watch it. It's really funny.

Record of the Lodoss War is a good story, but it requires a lot of geekness to watch it. Really good

Cyberpunk stuff

Ghost in the Shell, Akira and Cowboy Bebop. Don't need no explanation

Wolf's Rain is a good one. It's about Wolfs. No really. It's about wolfs that go around looking like humans, but are really wolfs. Check it out. At first thought it was cheesy, but it turns out to be cool :)

BioMega is a new Manga, just two volumes so far. It's good and it's raw. Look for it. Don't know if it's licensed in the US, so you may find manga scanlations(scan and translation) "illegaly" through the internet

Ergo Proxy is also new, but it's anime... Haven't watcvhed it yet, but some friends said it's good, and those friends are the ones I trust, so I might check it out, so far I know that it hasn't even finished airing (It's a one season anime, or 24 episodes)

people also tell me that Battle Angel Alita is good, but I can't really say either. I think it's pure Manga and it's licensed in USA, so check it out I guess

Trigun... well, it's not really a Cyberpunk, but it's a Space Western.... so I dunno:o

Mecha Stuff

some Gundams are good... Evangelion is a must, so is Robotech and Mazinger Z(Old school)

Uhm... Mysteries/Mystic/Freaky stuff

My gf tells me Elfen Lied is awesome. I should check that

Hellsing also.

Uhmm.. I'm tired, so I will tell ya more later

ever seen Battle Angel Alita, Corinthian?

holy ****, Ergo Proxy's awesome

Freaking sweet animation and really good story so fat. Usually the first episodes of anime tend to be kinda meh, vbut damn, Ergo Proxy's really cool

Plot Summary: In a world where humans and androids, known as autoreivs, live in relative peace, there exists a domed city named "Romdeau". Under the implementation of complete management control, it is a paradise where feelings are literally discarded, and the governing council dictates the way of life the citizens should live. But this utopian landscape is soon broken by a series of mystifying murders. Real Mayar, a female inspector from the Citizen Information Bureau, along with her autoreiv partner Iggy, are tasked to solve the murder cases. She is soon attacked by a creature drawn to her which is neither human nor android, and learns about the mysterious phenomena called "Awakening", an event which draws her further into the case...and to the world beyond the limits of Romdeau.

The animation is a mixture of 2D, cell shading and 3D

I found the manga to be far superior to the anime :o

Watch Kamen Rider kabuto sure its not a anime but it sure does look cool.

it's a wicked sweet cyberpunk series. The Manga is gorgeous, and they made a two episode OAV in 93. The OAV is sweet but doesn't do the series justice

The OAV is split into parts on youtube if you want to see the whole thing, but here's a quick trailer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRwwsSR_IzM&search=Battle Angel

James Cameron's been trying to do a live action version for years

And I just noticed

crazy monkey, you watched Avalon? Did you liked it?

very few people have seen that movie and I really loved it

and it's not anime, but you could argue
