Well those films tend to be a little more general audience friendly compared to most of the others. Longtime fans especially those who read the comics would send those movies through the paper shredder and into the fire.

I looked at it quite differently. We’ve all seen the end of the world/universe/etc. - let’s have fun with it this time. After the dour Man of Steel's endless collapsing buildings and superhumans exchanging punches but never hurting each other, I found the light hearted approach refreshing. A confused Mjolnir struggling to reach Thor as he and Malekith battled through the portals was awesome. The fact that Thor so confidently averts universal disaster without a real plan was very signature. I also find it interesting that critics who otherwise disliked the movie felt the fun roller coaster ending saved the film. There's some jarring tonal shifts in the end but Thor was always a wacky dichotomy to me anyway so I totally dug it. But to each his own.

Yeah,I think the bottom line is: they weren't gonna try to out do Avengers for best alien invasion.So they tried to make it feel different than anything we'd seen before.And I think they succeeded.

Not really. People who actually read the comics would realize IM3 is a mix of Extremis and Haunted, a story line where the Mandarin was a suave business man manipulating things from behind the scenes including a woman called Maya Hansen.

I know what Extremis is and I know it's in there but that's not really the issue. I don't think I need to talk about the plot twist which in the end was rendered null and void after "All Hail The King"

I liked the plot twist. The Mandarin is a lame villain in 99% of his comic appearances anyway. The Haunted story and IM3 made him interesting and something other than a Fu Manchu rip off.

I agree, but Marvel nullified all of that with their short.

What people more or less wanted to see was a Marvel equivalent of this rather than a Fu Manchu ripoff:

People wanted a complex villain that Tony would face off against. Ben Kingsley nailed that look and feel nicely.

I liked Iron Man 3. But I really want to see Fin Fang Foom and the Makluans. I think that would be so rad.

You should check out the one-shot though. It was really well done.

Which to me is proof that Marvel cares more about Fan's opinion than "Pro-Twist" fans would care to admit. They know that they dropped the ball with that crap.

And the "Fu Manchu" nod that people keep referring back to is irrelevant. The only Mandarin I knew of was the one in the 90's cartoon which was kinda campy but did get better it's second season. Maybe Marvel thought his rings were too much like the Infinity Gauntlet. If that is the case then why tease them in first place? Either way an "UP TO DATE VERSION" of the villain would not have hurt that movie one bit.

Go read the Knauf's Haunted story line. What we got in the film was pretty much ripped from that comic. Killian was an up to date Mandarin. A shady business man who manipulates events and people from behind the scenes.

I don't know why people continue to refer that Fu Manchu nonsense as if characters can't be updated. Was Nolans Joker anything like the 60's version...?

Come on. It's not even close to that level of suck. Plus Iron Man 3 was actually a good movie. Even though it's my least favorite MCU film even I will admit that.

There's a lot to like about Iron Man 3 - especially getting a real look at the character of Tony Stark and his ability to overcome adversity and improvise his way through just about any situation - the fact that he's not just some dude in a suit of armor. In Avengers, Cap asked "take that away and what are you?" and that's exactly what they did in Iron Man 3.

Well to be honest, I enjoyed IM3 up until Slattery entered the picture. After that I wanted to walk out of the theater and would've if it wasn't for the kids. And then it was just the attitude of Shane Black and a lot of the people who defended him that put me off even more. So as a result I'd be fine if I never see that film or another Ironman sequel again.

Now with TDW, I kinda let the negativity of others cloud my judgement on it. So I thinking about shopping around for it on Blu-ray.

Funny thing is that Ironman himself wasn't what I'd call an A list hero until the movies gains popularity. So to say that his ARCH NEMESIS wasn't A List doesn't really hold much weight to me.

You kinda lost me with this one here. I say address them specifically instead of lumping them in with the rest of fans who didn't like IM3 as a way of discrediting us all.

Another major difference is that Mandarin is nowhere near as iconic or popular as Doom, Deadpool, and Galactus.

Iron Man was one of the Big Three Avengers for decades. He was far more important than Mandarin. Iron Man's rogues gallery was infamous for being the worst among the major heroes.

IM3 was a great opportunity to change that.

Considering the studio responsible for making a Tree and a talking raccoon household names. I don't really think dismissing Mandarin as a D list villain justifies the b@stardatioin of him but I get that people liked that film regardless.

Lets not forget the real reason for this particular thread. IM3 for me was a disappointment, not a Studio killer.
