Friends of God: A Road Trip

Times like these I wish I had HBO. I get a kick out of being scared by zealots.

I was in a car with some bible thumpers today...I went to a church and had to listen to why homosexuals were "depraved and sinners in the eyes of God, and couldn't accept Jesus". I tried to defend otherwise to my friends in the car. They said you cannot selectively read the Bible, so I asked them why they were anti-semetic or impoverished (both things the Bible requires) and of course they claimed it did not say those things. They also posted on my wall (on Facebook) that Jesus loves me even if you don't understand it. It makes me sad to see such intolerance.

Why were you in the car with them? I attempt to avoid people like that at all costs.

They aren't exactly easy to avoid down here in the Bible Belt...hometown of "Christian Exodus" and Bob Jones as well.

Why I was in the car. Long story...in essence someone died...so I agreed to go to a church service this weekend where they were going to mention "those recently departed" in the service. The place was an abomination. Not just because of their vast overly generalized "sex theology" talk they gave but because of the attacks on gays and the fact that communion was "self serve".

Where do you live? Here in Texas the Bible Thumping is a state pastime.
I almost got physically attacked when I told someone that the rapture is never once mentioned in the Bible.

Don't you know anything godless sodomite? Six thousand years ago Adam named all of the dinosaurs, we lived in peace with them like in the Flintstones.
And don't try to ask any logical questions like: If Adam named all the species why do we keep finding new ones?

As a Christian I do not condone any of that. People fear change and hate and resent all that embodies that change. In 20 years, those goons that use the Bible as an excuse to murder people and yell slurs or segregate others will just now be getting use to this age. They are behind mentally and socially about 20-30 years to the rest of the U.S. I don't think half of the stuff going on in this country is right but I don't chastise or put down others for making their choice on how to live. I also think those tards that play with venomous snakes and preach are friggin idiots...it's so much fun to watch that on tv and it's even funnier to hear about how they get bit and sometimes die.

I can guarantee you Adam didn't name all the species and keep a record of each animal in his extensive bamboo library full of tea leaf scrolls. Whomever thinks Adam sat down and named every single animal on the face of the planet is dumb.

thank you.

jesus loves you.

Adam must have had a better memory than me to name over ten million different known species, not including fish.

I'd take it a step further and say anyone who thinks those stories are anything but allegorical and intuitive and based on pre-enlightenment thought (which held intuition, faith, divine providence and emotion as the highest forms of human intellect rather than reason and factual evidence) is probably not too bright either.

(I don't mean to imply one form of thought is superior to the other).

You guys think this is crazy, wait until you read this:

I went downtown one night to pick up a friend who couldn't drive himself home. I was stopped, let me illustrate "stop," I was pulled from a crowd of people, yanked to the side of the walk, and was told "the wages of sin is death."

Long story short, I told them I was merely helping a friend out. This person then told me that what I was doing was sin, being downtown in the vicinity of bars. I ended the conversation, and asked said person "do you think Jesus would risk "face" and enter a bar to help out a friend?" He answered "no."

Looking in on the bible belt is one thing; living in the bible belt is a planet unto itself.

Thankfully, I love a Savior, not a religion.

pretty well said, dude.

Thank you.

This extreme, in-your-face-religion is frustrating, to say the least.

Since when is it more important to appear holy and righteous than to do unto your fellow man as you would have him do unto you?

Even if I was a supporter of another religion, I would still find it very disturbing that a group of people who claim love to mock anyone trying to get a drunk home safely.

How is screaming "the wages of sin is death" beneficial to one's cause?

An extra part of the story, when I asked said person if he ever read about Jesus dining with "the hated" of his time, he answered "Jesus was just being nice."

It took all I had not to lose my cool. If I had, my points would have been moot.

That's assault, you could have maced him or kicked his ass.

Trust me, I thought about it.

However, I just laid my hand on his head, spoke some jibberish, and when he didn't fall flat, I screamed, "this man must have a demon in him!!"

i just finished this documentary on hbo called "friends of God: a road trip". in it, the director embarks on a road trip across the bible belt and interviews various church and evangelical leaders. to make a long story short, this scared the **** out me.

these people are so hateful it's digusting. i mean, to actually use God's name when preaching against PEOPLE is evil. i refuse to believe that Jesus Christ would allow pastors and preachers to use anti-gay slurs. i refuse to believe that Jesus would tolerate their teachings that anyone that is not a Christian is a lesser human being.

it's sick. it really is. these people are the new nazis. what do you think?

Thats no surprise. Its sad that this happens but it seems thats how religion has worked since its use as a tool. Tolerance comes second after telling you how you will burn in hell.

Jesus loves you, but he has no qualms about damning you to hell.

He may say he loves me but he just wants my cash. If hell exists, I'm proably going there for a being a unbeliever. But thats a big if.

anyone ever dream of colonizing a new planet and starting a new civilization where people truly keep their religion to themselves and out of government as it should be?

do you have ANY idea how peaceful this new world would be?

i can't even describe how f#cking amazing that would be.

no one but me? really?!?!
