Judd Apatow’s third movie as director following “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” and “Knocked Up” will be set in the world of stand-up comedy, the filmmaker tells mtv.com. The untitled feature shooting this September, which stars Apatow’s old roommate Adam Sandler as well as regular Apatow players Seth Rogen and Leslie Mann, centers on a pair of comics – and is described as the director’s most grown-up effort to date.
From mtv.com:
"It's a comedy, but it has more drama in it. A hilarious drama is what I'm going for," Apatow said. "Every movie, I'm trying to find a way to go deeper, to tell stories about subjects that are important and make them less and less broad while making them equally as funny. [This film is] another step in that progression.

Thats cool, I hope he can pull that off. The idea shows lots of integrity.

I love anything from him so I'm already excited!

I can't shake the image of Sally Field and Tom Hanks out of my head. I'm sure this will be a lot different from that. I'll see it.

If Judd's directing, my ass will be in a theater.

Anything with Apatow name, I'm there.

It would be best inside joke for Eric Bana to be cast in the lead. I can't wait to see how Judd handles this subject.

I know he started in comedy but some of the stuff I have seen Bana was not funny, but he was kinda funny in Chopper so he'll porbably do good

Hmm, Sandler is an interesting choice, to be honest. Sandler is both the most underrated and overrated actor in Hollywood. Dramatically he is a great actor and has proved it many times over starting with The Wedding Singer. Comedicially he is entirely overrated. If he can make this movie as he did The Wedding Singer without falling back on stupid noises, it could be decent. Though I don't see why he just won't give Paul Rudd an opportunity to star.

Paul Rudd: I thought Jews hooked each other up?!

Judd Apatow Finds Funny People
Source: Variety
June 12, 2008

Variety says that Judd Apatow has added Jason Schwartzman and Jonah Hill have joined the previously-announced Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann and Eric Bana in Funny People, which will be co-financed by Universal Pictures and Columbia Pictures, with Universal distributing on July 31, 2009.

The filmmaker, who last wrote and directed Knocked Up, was deliberately vague about subject matter, allowing only that the movie takes place in the world of standup comedy and the focus is on a comedian who has a near-death experience.

The film is a co-production of Apatow Productions and Happy Madison, and Apatow is producing with Clayton Townsend and Barry Mendel. Jack Giarraputo, Rogen and Evan Goldberg are executive producers.

Production begins in mid-September in Los Angeles.

Jason Schwartzman? An Apatow collaboration? Count me in.

It may be Sandler's final come back, if he doesn't fail. But I trust Apatow and Rogen, so I am looking forward to this film.

Sandler has had a few really good roles in not so great films, I hate the idea he that he needs a comeback.

Gotta give Sandler kudos for Punch Drunk Love as well.

HAHA, I knew it...Jonah will be in this Apatow movie....way too predictable.

No Eric Bana? Does he not have as big a role as I thought?

yeah, I thought Bana was one of the main people. I guess by putting Rogen and Sandler's faces on the poster, it will get butts in the seats. Marketing...
