Hey Superfans,

either a future Superman or JL film must feature Darkseid
( Monghul is cool, but really, he's Darkseid-lite, GL kicked his ass,
come on, )

Anyway, Darkseid has soooooo much potential as a villain, but
truly great villains are a combination of good writing and
great casting.

Now Darkseid is going to have to be motion-capture based,
so really, the physical appearance doesn't matter too much,
but the voice is essential.

Here are some of my thoughts

1. Michael Clarke Duncan, of course sadly, he's dead, but he would
have had the voice and the physical presence to be a great Darkseid.

2. James Earl Jones as the voice, while Dwayne Johnson does the motion-capture.

3. Vin Diesel, could do the voice, probably the motion capture, but
would need a lot of CG.

4. either Keith David or Tony Todd, again not much CG needed for
these big dudes. Both have that deep, gravelly menacing sound.

5. Ron Perlman, has the voice, and no CGI needed to make him look
like Darkseid, he's already an ugly bastard with a face that looks
like its been carved out of rock.

6. Lance Henriksen, the voice is perfect, the craggy face not bad.
would need CGI for the body though.

and the WORST CHOICE......

Christopher Walken ! can you imagine all those weird pauses ?

(and of course either Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving or Jeremy Irons as Desaad).

Okay, enough of my malarkey, what do you guys think ?

Here's the best answer:

Do him completely CG'ed and get Michael Ironside to voice him.

Think of it like how they did Optimus Prime in Transformers.

Dude ! Thanks for the post.

All Respect to Michael Ironside, for his voice (and for the fact that
he was the first person in a movie to make someone's head explode...with his mind).

Still I have to disagree, for 2 reasons

1) Motion capture adds a lot to the feel of the character. The reason Gollum was so well done in LOTR, was because of the hard work of Andy Serkis (who I worked for, on the Hobbit, and can honestly say is the nicest guy ever !).
Having the movements done by a real person makes the character's movements....well, real. Look what Ruffalo did with the Hulk. Totally
CG but moved like a person, because of motion capture.

2) Ironside's voice is gravelly magic, but (and this is a personal thing)
he has a strong Canadian accent, which for me somewhat diminishes his level of menace. I can get away with saying this, as while I live in NZ,
I'm Canadian, from Toronto originally (just like Michael Ironside). I keep expecting him to say " All will bow down before the might of Darkseid, eh !"

I'm not saying Ironside couldn't do it, I know he's done Darkseid before, and done a great job, but I reckon the vocal register has to go down
even lower for the big screen, right down to the basement. (which is why Clarke Duncan, RIP, was my first choice and James Earl Jones would be number 2)

Still, Ironside would be a strong contender. I'll put him at 7. on my list.

cheers.

Or a good way to make the character better and make the film billions of dollars.

Jeremy Irons or Michael Ironside. The latter would be perfect for mo-capping. I can also see Mickey Rourke in the role.

Darkseid should be one actor. No CGI, no voice over.

I disagree, an actor to make the character look threatening, and a voice over for him to have a deep voice, that's why Darth Vader worked so well. And Darkseid should look bigger and more larger than life than the Thing or Hellboy, so CGI is almost essencial for him.

I don't think they need to overdo it with the CGI. Darkseid in STAS was always the same height as Superman, maybe even an inch shorter. And he was still menacing as hell. As long as the actor is good, has the presence and can sell you the fact that you don't **** with that person, height shouldn't be an issue.

Just look at Manu Bennett in Arrow. He's shorter than Stephen Amell, and is still utterly imposing.

Darth Vader was a man in a suit, it was easy to go the voice over route. Darkseid has a face. Maybe I'm just old school, but that face, whatever it looks like, would be cooler if it was a human face with makeup on it and not entirely done by a computer. That's what makes special effects really special, when they're physical, tangible things. Darkseid can still be huge without being digital.

"How tall is King Kong?"

"3'6"!"

Camera tricks > CGI

I'm also a kind of traditionalist, but i imagine Darkseid as having some makeup with CGI on top of it.

First, big ups to everyone who weighed in !

Dude, that would work, but you would need an actor of immense stature.
I reckon Michael Clarke Duncan could have done it, but none of the other
guys who have the right voice are up to it.

If Benedict Cumberbatch can do the movements and voice of Smaug,
I reckon one of those other guys can do the same, and do Darkseid all CGI.

Darkseid doesn't have to do any fancy moves so someone like James Earl Jones could certainly do the motion capture (if he could channel his Thusla Doom vibe from Conan, he'd absolutely kill it).

Which actor would you choose bro ?
