I got in an interesting discussion with a friend and wanted to seek others' opinions.

The one thing I want to happen/see before I go is at least ONE sci-fi concept brought to life.

It seems like the last MAJOR sci-fi concept that was realized was the moon landing. We mentioned Star Trek communicators which were a precursor to modern day cell phones but I'm talking about one of the BIGGER sci-fi concepts.

The one I wanted was a colony on another planet/moon. I wanted to see what other major sci-fi concepts others could think of, I have a short list but if you have more let me know.

Hopefully we can get a good list/discussion going

First humans on Mars, perhaps? I will consider that big :)

What about flying cars, like in BTTF 2?

The one thing I don't want to happen that probably will is self driving cars.

I see driving as an art and I love how there are so many different ways to drive a car and the skill that goes into driving.

I know it would probably cut down on accidents, but I think people should know how to drive better, not get something else to do it for them.

As cool as they are, the first 3 on the poll could be really dangerous if utilized. Therefore, I'd probably want flying vehicles.

I want most of it to happen.

To build colonies at other planets is a huge project and it will take decades, maybe even centuries, for each one of them. But our solar system is limited, and after some time we need interstellar travel to find other worlds.
Let's just hope we won't get some problems like the one in Even Horizon

We need Terminators and Skynet for Time Travel! :o

I'd really love teleportation. No more travel woes.

I guess there'd still be Bones' fears of getting your atoms scrambled across great distances. But,I'd hope the tech would be 100% sound before it became widely used.

Speaking of the dangers of teleportation, you guys should read Stephen Kings short story The Jaunt.

Time Travel.

I can go back in time and prevent Tyler Perry from being born.

I never saw Elysium but I liked the part of the trailer that showed the woman being scanned for diseases and having them be removed at the same time. I thought that was pretty cool.

Virtual reality -

Coming this year in the form of the Oculus Rift.

I think we're living in very fascinating times in which technology is moving at a faster and faster rate. Computers improve all the time; Moore's law has held.

As long as that curve keeps going up, as Moore's law predicts, it may be feasable that one day we'll be able to download our minds to a computer; live in a virtual world that feels completely real.

I think the real life potential of technology over the next 5, 10 and 20 years is a much more interesting topic than speculating about teleportation technology.

Flying cars would be terrible. Think of all the dumb **** people do with cars now and imagine them slamming into planes, apartment buildings or blimps.

I have. It's fine until you stay conscious for the trip, then you're boned.

I forgot to put in the poll "Discovery/visitation of Intelligent Alien Life"

I'm also excited about Mars One and their plan to send people to Mars by 2024/2025. The technology actually seems to exist for this to be possible. Humanity becoming an inter-planatary species is a very exciting prospect with wide reaching implications for the future.

Well, most of those seem rather fanciful to me (except the lunar colony, I imagine that will happen in the next fifty years).

I think technologies that will develop in the next hundred years, that I hope to see in my lifetime, are self-driving cars, nanobots that can ****** aging, self-aware AI, and the cloning extinct animals, like the wooly mammoth.

We will also see the first generations of genetically engineered humans, which is quite the can of worms.

Having lived in Florida, I pray for the day of self-driving cars.
