So much hope.
Apparently Francis Lawrence and Gore Verbinski were in negotiation for directing Gambit but they moved on.
I think there is probably more to it when it comes to what characters they choose to give solos too.
Gambit likely has a personality they feel could carry a movie as a leading man aswell as being able to put in some Melee fights for a cool visual.
The whole idea of making a Gambit movie is not because the character has potential or not. Is because Fox asked the actor which x-men character he would like to play and he answered that he loves Gambit. That's it. Do a little resource online and you'll find out about this.
I don't feel like Gambit has a potential to carry a series of movies. Gambit is more of a loner, he's a good thief against humans but when he faces mutants he always gets captured and some x-men goes to his rescue. He is also not a leader. I don't remember to ever seeing Gambit to lead a group of mutants in the comics.

Tatum specifically says he doesn't want to appear in a team movie before doing a solo movie.I don't think its tatum thats stopping Gambit being in a main X-Men movie, they have wanted to do a solo for a while its just tatum made fox finally move it forward.
But thats not the sort of introduction Tatum has in mind for Gambit. Instead, he wants to make sure audiences understand who Gambit is before the character is forced to share the screen with a bunch of other mutants. Speaking with MTV News, Tatum says he doesnt want Gambit appearing in any other film like X-Men: Apocalypse, for instance until you know who he is.
That's ridculas.fox isn't stopping all non-deadpool films. The gifted is following legion on TV and it's full speed ahead on new mutants.Ryan Reynolds is the current savior of the X-verse. Until there's a Deadpool related bomb I wouldn't look for other spin-offs.

I really think this movie has the potential to be another 2015 Fantastic Four. Specially since is made by Fox.
Fox has the bad habit of getting weird and unknown mutants to their solo movies. See X-Men Origins wolverine how many weird mutants they used, Agent Zero, that black guy who teleports, that guy who controls electricity. The Wolverine movie, that poison woman which I don't even think is a character from the comics. Logan, many non famous mutants, having only Professor X, X-23 and Logan as known mutants.
If they do a Gambit movie they instead of using interesting mutant characters like Rogue, Psylocke, or whoever, they'll use mutants that nobody even ever heard of.
In closing argument, I really don't see a Gambit movie working.
Instead Fox could focus in 2 different x-men movies. One having the classic team, Jean, Cyclops, Beast, Iceman and Angel, and another movei with lesser known mutants like the New Mutants with some known mutants like Storm and Professor X in it.
Damn, Francis Lawrence is one of my choices for the main series, he is a really good director.
Where was this stated, I heard absolutely nothing about this movie?Didn't they say they were looking to shoot Gambit next year though? Why would they announce it was going to film this year then?

Deadpool and Wolverine are the only X related characters who can carry a solo comic. Same applies to films.
No one gives a **** about any other individual X character. And it will stay that way until a true visionary comes along and does something really special.
ark Phoenix. His character would work well with the 90s period, perhaps if Sinister is the main villain the writers could play with that, or they could develop his relationship with Storm and he can fill that bad boy role that's vacant since we have no Logan to compete with. One of the reasons he wasn't in the OT because they thought his character was to "similar" to Logan. His arc can be either villain turned good or reformed thief trying to fit in with X-Men.I'd rather we not have one of those type of characters for a while. Or maybe use Angel to fill that role instead.and he can fill that bad boy role that's vacant since we have no Logan to compete with.
