In the latest issue of Empire, Lauren Schuler Donner expressed her desire for a Gambit solo film, starring Tatum:

More on her approach to the X-Men film universe:

Thought this deserves it's own thread. Thoughts guys...

Sounds good. Gambit's about the only other character besides Deadpool and Wolverine I think should have a solo away from the X-Men. And can be done without a huge budget.

Tatum can do the accent, he's from around New Orleans and likes the character. So I think he could do a solid job. Interview with him talking about Gambit at :31sec

Hearing Tatum talk about how much he want to do it, even showing off some of that accent, made me giddy!

I would prefer anyone over Channing Tatum. They need to someone who can act, not just eye candy.

It's about as solid casting decision as Megan Fox for Jean Grey.

Only films Ive seen of his have been GI Joe 1 and 2, Side Effects, Haywire and 21 Jumpstreet. First GI Joe was the worst thing I saw him do acting wise. Evreything else I saw I thought he actually did a solid job.

Based on those films I never got the hate, always thought he got a bad rep cause of the lame chick flicks he always gets associated with.

Tatum is an A-Lister. Plus he's gotten better since 21 Jump Street.

I feel bad for Taylor getting replaced, but I can't blame the studio. Dude's box office poison.

Worst cast choice ever, I'd rather pick Aidan Turner or Gaspard Ulliel.

I always thought Josh Holloway would have been cool but I think that shipped has sailed.

Not a huge fan of Tatum, but I'm mildly impressed that he seems to actually know of the character and like him. Not sure he has the charisma to pull it off, but it'd certainly be fun to see more of the character (film with Rogue anyone?)

He looks the part, but he just doesn't give off that "southern charm," and his accent is gonna suck. The best part of Gambit is his over the top personality, and Tatum doesn't have it.
Ryan Reynolds, for example, had that personality for Deadpool. Chris Evans had it for Human Torch. Tatum just has that dumb as bricks personality. he can act, but I doubt he can pull off the character. I'm not with it.
I don't know who else can do it. Maybe Armie Hammer? There are plenty of guys out there.

When I think of smooth, crafty, card shark, cajun, cat burgular, the last person I think of is Channing Tatum.

I don't want it to happen and I don't see it happening.

I don't mind if they cast Channing Tatum as Gambit but seriously, they should just include him in a X-Men movie.

I dunno, I can see it, myself. Aside from G.I. Joe, which had pretty much no redeeming factors anyway, he's been decent in what I've seen him in. He's far from my first choice, but I think he could potentially handle it.

Have any of you seen anything he's been in, besides G.I. Joe? I thought he showed natural charm and comedic chops in 21 Jump Street and Magic Mike.

According to Tatum, he's actually from New Orleans. He says he could do a Cajun accent.

Not sure Gambit really has an "over the top personality." Actually, he's kind of the opposite: laid back and understated.

I have seen G.I. Joe and Step Up okay and I also think he's very hot, very sexy, very cute and very charming.

Like I said, I don't mind if he's the new Gambit, I just don't think a solo movie is needed and I don't think its gonna happen.

I'd give the two movies I mentioned if you want to see him actually, ya know, act.

To play Gambit well the actor has to be capable of subtlety. Tatum has no subtlety.

Doesn't much matter anyways though. Fox has made a lot more bad movies with the Marvel characters than good at this point. Chances are that a Gambit movie would suck with or without Tatum.
