I want GRRM to crank these last few books out as much as the next guy, but I've never taken to the whole line of thinking of "Oh, he's over 60 and he's got a gut, HE'S PRACTICALLY ON DEATH'S DOOR!!!"

That said, if does keep going at the rate he has been and ends up croaking before the finish line, that in itself should be a Hell-worthy offense. Or at least a good solid amount of time in Limbo. :o

It would be a crime on the audience's attention span to fully postpone Stannis's march on Winterfell, kind of like his season three plotline. If they follow my theory of preserving the cliffhanger, I'd see Stannis leaving the wall around episode 4, recruit in the back half of the season, then fight the Frey forces on the ice before marching on Winterfell and left on an ambiguous note, kind of like the wight army attacking the Fist of the First Men.

GRRM will kill Stannis and or Jon Snow off...he will do it just for the shoch and awe factor.

Nothing that's happened in the books has ever been done for the shock or awe factor. When you think about it, it all made sense. None of the saga could have happened if Ned Stark's head wasn't chopped off, and if he was sent to the Wall then where could his story go from there? The Red Wedding was completely shocking but Robb was losing the war, that story was over and by bringing about the RW it's made Theon become Reek, the Boltons take Winterfell, the Grand Northern Conspiracy and without it the upcoming Battle of Winterfell wouldn't be happening.

Okay, so not looking at any of the other posts at the moment. Three weeks ago I cracked open the first book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, and I am at the cusp of finishing A Storm of Swords tomorrow. Obviously, given that pace I am tremendously captivated by the books, and though Martin's predilection for elongated descriptive catalogues and odd euphemisms can be quite annoying, and Bran's chapters a tire to get through, I am very much enjoying the series so far and appreciate the differences between the show and book.

I was told by a friend that the books would make me appreciate the show less, but in fact it has made me appreciate it more, as I can understand how well material has been adapted for budget, and even improved upon in some areas, though certainly other areas lose out.

So I'm just past the death of Oberyn now. I look forward to going beyond the vale and entering uncharted territory.

The disappointments on the tv adaptation is usually less good dialogue, pointless filler additions like Greyworm subplot and then characters like Stannis given a bad adaptation.

So now that we're in the thick of Game of Thrones show, and with Martin's constant comments about wanting a film to finish things up, what would you guys have thought if these were adapted into films? Taking out box office, practicalities with runtime with theater chains playing, etc, just as is. Could these have made great movies?

They'd be an extreme ***** to adapt only getting harder with more movies, but it would have been possible to make great films.

Oh, the Emmys decided to acknowledge GOT again? That's cool. But, uhh....

YOU SHOULD'VE ****ING NOMINATED MICHELLE FAIRLEY LAST YEAR!!!! :argh:

:o

You can't have movie series with so many characters, you'd have to make 1 main movie franchise and i'd assume that would be either a movie series of Jon Snow and/or Daenerys Targaryen or Tyrion Lannister, assuming those three survive to the very end.

There's so many different arcs from Stannis' plot to Arya plot to Jamie Lannister, Brienne of Tarth, the Starks, the Tyrells, the Greyjoys, the Boltons, the Others, the Golden Company, the Martells.

If you'd adapt A Song of Fire and Ice into a movie franchise, you simply have to focus on 1 lead.

Martin might want a film adaptation because it adds more budget for CGI and cast, because there's going to be so much war scenes. The television show hasn't even shown all battles, remember season 1 where you mostly just saw the introduction and aftermaths of battles?

I think they wouldn't have worked for the reasons you suggested. They had 20 hours to adapt one book, and there's still some more of Jon's storyline left to cover in Season 5. Two hours would be awful.

The head of HBO said today at the TCA Presentations that there are no discussions for a film.

The only way a film could have worked is if the rest of the show was set up so that we get 3 hour action sequences with story snippets throughout.

If they want to do a movie about the series....Greyjoy Rebellion prequel.

or just a prequel of Fat Walda....

I can't see anything other than a Dunk and the egg story being made into a movie. The books are way too huge to fit a movie format.

I can see them working on purely an adaptation level. Again, taking out all the other considerations which factor into why this is probably suited better for a tv show format. But just as an example, the first movie I'd say focus on Ned (mainly), Tyrion, Jon, and Dany. Everyone else are more or less peripherals since their stories come into contact with theirs. It would have to take some great screenwriters, director, and I expect Martin presiding over the development process. It wouldn't hurt to have him on board either, since he's an experienced screenwriter himself. But as of now, I can see the first two being adapted.

i think making a film to end the series could be impractical. alot of people are going to want to get paid by the time that comes around. it'll cost 200 mill just to pay the actors.

a prequel, Robert's Rebellion makes a lot more sense.

Even Robert's Rebellion seems like a stretch. You'd have to follow Ned, Robert, Rhaegar/Lyanna/Elia, Stannis, Jaime. Still a **** load of storylines for them to work in.

GRRM has said all the questions about the Rebellion will be answered in ASOIAF, so a prequel series will be unnecessary.

I'd rather see a story we don't know a lot about like the War of the Ninepenny Kings.

No no no. It's a scream of joy.
