Game of Thrones - HBO part 2 - Part 5

Spidey-Bat's point seems to contradict itself. "Renly doesn't know how to play the game....but the only reason he has support is because he allied with the Tyrells." I'd say that having the foresight to ally with the Tyrells in order to build the biggest army is playing the game pretty damn well.

Renly got the Tyrell support because him and the finest Tyrell warrior were in love.

It would be like calling Joffrey good at playing the game because his father is Jaime, his uncle is Tyrion, and his granddad is Tywin.

The Tyrells are the ones sucking up to the Lannisters. They bailed them out at Blackwater to make up for allying with Renly earlier (and the Targaryens back during Robert's Rebellion).

They could have still allied with Robb and let Joffrey, Tyrion, Cersei, etc. fall to Stannis. Or they could have allied with Stannis out of desperation, as Stannis had no problem taking the rest of Renly's bannermen who all came to Renly's side because he was better at courting true support than Stannis. The Tyrells had their pick of remaining kings and picked the Lannisters because Joffrey could give Margaery a Queenship. Nothing more. The Tyrells allying with the Lannisters broke Stannis.

The Lannisters still control King's Landing.

Not to get too far ahead of the books, but are you sure about that? It seems their power is diminishing more and more.

I think Ned and Stannis are great examples to use in D&D character alignment. Ned is Lawful Good, basically a saint. Stannis is Lawful Neutral, he may do things that could be considered evil, but he always operates within the law. Killing Renly may have been evil but he had every right to do so because Renly was a traitor.

Never played D&D. I'm just saying Stannis acts like he is Mr. Honorable and Noble, but he really isn't. I guess the reason I never really like him much is he's a hypocrite. Most of the other characters are bastards but admit it. But Stannis pretends he is the honorable king, when he has shown time and again he'll do anything to ensure his Kingship. Perhaps, that's why he's still alive and Ned (as well as a few other honorable characters) are dead. But that doesn't mean I have to like Stannis. Tyrion is a bastard who upon occasion tries to do the right thing. Same with Jaime Lannister. They know they're vile, but try to keep it in check and do the right thing when they can, but do not pretend it erases what they've done. Stannis pretends he's a great guy even though he does one vile thing after another. The hypocrisy is why I've never cared for the character.

The power structure is rather odd. Especially since entire "kingdoms" are unaccounted for. We still know nothing about Dorne. The Stormlands are just sitting there, waiting for orders from Stannis presumably. No one has mentioned the Vale in a long time. Riverrun has presumably seceded alongside the North.

So yeah, they might want to cover some of that.

The Riverlands (Riverrun, The Twins/Freys and all their bannerlords) have seceded with the North. It's more explicit in the book as you read more of them and all of Cat's and Jaime's scenes in ACOK took place in Riverrun or around it, instead of in middle of some field in the west like on the show.

Dorne starts playing a role in the third book, but I don't know if they'll wait until the fourth season or not to introduce Dornish characters.

Storm's End bannermen begged forgiveness from Joffrey after Blackwater and Joffrey allowed most of them to rejoin his side after the battle (through Tywin and Cersei's urging). The only support Stannis has left is Dragonstone and the lesser lords near there and where his wife was born.

The Vale is staying neutral in this conflict. Cat begs her sister to join Robb through much of ACOK via raven with no reply. Lysa won't even reply when Cat writes her that their father is dying. The Vale's untapped power becomes a central concern for the Lannisters and Littlefinger next season.

They really could have just show the characters with a map or something.

But thanks for the info.

So the Stormlands, everyone gets a turn? First Robert, then Renly, then Stannis, the Joffrey?

Speaking of unaccounted forces, what about the North? Robb still has a lot of untapped resources at his disposal. In order to win, the Stark needs to do is contact his cousin, Tony...

And he will come to Avenge Ned's death. :woot:

"Guys… It kinda smells here. Pepper, have the workmen clear out the crypts, that’s where we’re putting the Arc Reactor. If Fury calls, tell him I’m not on Earth right now. If Banner calls, tell him to get the hell up here!"

I've been waiting a whole year for someone to make that joke :awesome:

"Okay Bruce, we're going to go this place called King's Landing. There's a smug asshat there named Joffrey, along with his smug mother and smug grandfather. You'll only need to watch them for five minutes and then you'll smash the city to the ground."

The Tyrells have nothing to gain by supporting Robb. The Riverlands put themselves in enough danger allying with them. The Reach borders the Westerlands, Crownlands, Stormlands, and Dorne and has no natural terrain to help defend them, it would be another Field of Fire if they allied with the Starks. They had little to gain from allying with Stannis because they know he despises them for the siege of Storm's End. Margaery is their meal ticket to power, they need her to marry someone in a position of power which was Renly and now Joffrey.

They do at this point in time where the show is, I assumed we were talking about it.

Neither have I but it's an interesting concept, I'd suggest reading the Wikipedia article on it.

I liked Stannis early on because I found him interesting as you hear much about him in the first book. I didn't really like him until the climax of the third book and his plans in the fifth. He may be a hypocrite, but he is doing the right thing.

Storm's End is still held by men loyal to Stannis. Joffrey only pardoned the lords captured at Blackwater who asked of it.

I wonder how long before there will be a gif of Tywin slapping Joffrey once Season 3 starts.

Just finished up watching both seasons and while this show is great I'm a tad bit upset that it really has no "end". That is just a pet peeve of mine and I should have waited. Yet it is one of the best stories I've absorbed in years.

One thing I will say is that I can't believe Joffrey is still alive.

Man I hope Joffrey doesn't die soon, he's the one constant in the show where we all love to hate him.

What I did find odd was his apparent reluctance to break off his engagement with Sansa.

He probably knows that people already look down upon him for being a coward and didnt want to make matters worse until he had an excuse.

That was all for show. He doesn't care about their engagement. He acted that way to appease the crowd and look like a king who minds his vows and commitments to the gods. Besides he can have more "fun" with Sansa now that she isn't going to be queen.

Actually thought it may be because of his mother. He does usually do what she says. Once she gave him the go ahead, then it was off.

Joffrey doesn't seem smart enough to understand the need for court theatre. This is the guy who ordered a hundred people to be executed because someone threw cow **** at him.

Also his in Reign Of Fire but I don't think he gets slapped in that movie although he does have to sit and watch Christian Bale and Gerard Butler perform amateur drama productions of Star Wars.

Brilliant. All that's missing after that is a GIF of the "Puny God" scene but with Joffrey's head photoshopped over Loki's.
