Xbox Game Pass

nobody cares what Michael Pachter says. 4 million new subscribers sounds good to me
Basic math says otherwise. Four million new subscribers at a cost of next to nothing isn't sustainable business. Then there's the inevitable sub drop off next month. Triple A is ****ed

ain't no way there will be a sub drop off next month. Microsoft can take the non-sustainability, they're the biggest company in the world.
If there isn’t one and you want one, feel free to make it.
I'll consider it ;)

Sub drop off happens every month lol. Cope harder. Triple A is ****ed.

I got no reason to cope, I haven't investing anything at all into the Xbox ecosystem. I am just a firm believer that CoD will save it.
How exactly do you expect a single franchise to recoup a 67 billion investment when they're gaming division is hemorrhaging money and talent faster than they can make it?

CoD = system seller. apart from a few exceptions, it is the best selling game every single year. why would anyone spend $70 when they can get the game via a subscription?

Nobody is buying new hardware for CoD. They can get this game on the hardware they already own.

"why would anyone spend $70 when they can get the game via a subscription?"

This is the entire problem. They're not just giving away CoD for next to nothing, They're giving away every game in their first party lineup for next to nothing. Devaluing the medium across the board.

not everyone has a current gen console yet. for those interested in a Ps5, Ps5 pro, or a Series X/S, there is still every Q4 holiday season. and for those interested in CoD, and interested in gamepass, and only interested in playing on a console, then Xbox is their only option.

well if this is devaluing the medium so much, then why is Microsoft doing it?

Its fairly late into this console cycle. You might have a point if this were year two.

Because they're currently ran by executives who've arguably never understood the medium in the first place. They're chasing subscription money because of Netflix and Spotify while willfully ignoring the damage those entities have done to the creatives that do the actual work. These idiots are polishing brass on the titanic. The ship is sinking.

the past 2 generations lasted 7-8 years, so going by this time frame, we're about halfway through the generation but we're not close to the end of it.

whose idea was it to buy Activision? whose idea was it to put CoD day & date on gamepass? I don't think it was the executives at Microsoft, I think it was the executives at Xbox (which is now Microsoft gaming).

They're the same clueless executives. Im not even sure what point you're trying to make here.

I was asking rhetorical questions. The point I am trying to make here is it was Phil Spencer's idea to buy Activision, and it was his idea to put CoD day & date on gamepass. And he's not some clueless executive who has never understood the medium.

He's the head of Microsoft Gaming, who's had the title for over a decade. If you're arguing that gamepass is devaluing the medium, destroying AAA gaming, you're indirectly admitting that Spencer is responsible for it.

I'm directly admitting he's responsible at this point. I've always understood his desire to get out of first party hardware. Xbox makes dog **** hardware so it makes sense. Hell, it's why I don't work for them anymore, but the gamepass experiment has effectively failed. Its not just gamepass either, triple A games are taking 6-8 years to see the light of day now. A lot of the games Microsoft showcased two years ago still haven't seen release and when they do, they'll likely be unfinished because that's how triple A games launch now. Dumping hundreds of millions of dollars into projects only to essentially give them away for next to nothing isn't sustainable. It doesn't matter how large the company is. It's still a business.

glad to see we're finally in agreement this early on in a conversation lol. gamepass as a service and overall as a concept may sound good in theory, but in practice as you've said it's been quite troublesome for Microsoft. and despite being backed by them, Xbox bit off more than they could chew with acquiring Activision and even Bethesda before that.

TBH I think this is massively underselling the core staying power COD has for loads of people. Plenty of gamers out there who are only really buying the same, broad appeal games every year like FIFA & COD. Only now for the same money they'd pay for COD, they can subscribe and get get COD plus all these other games? I think COD is gonna bring a lot of those people and then a big chunk of them will stick around (especially those on PC etc).

Also I think the Season Pass model and COD shop is where the series generates all it's income these days, and that income is funnelling straight to Microsoft now. It's just gonna keep printing money for them, like GTA Online does for Rockstar and all they need to do is keep supporting it.

I agree the landscape has changed and is continuing to change at a weird pace, but as far as COD goes, they're gonna be totally fine and this can only help their Game Pass sitch.

A sub for 20 dollars a month vs 6 million lost sales at 70 dollars doesn't add up to success no matter how you spin it. You cannot pump hundreds of millions of dollars into these franchises and then give the products away for next to nothing every month. Its not just a CoD, they've been essentially giving away every IP they own for pennies when they're spending millions to create the content. Business does not work that way. The 15,000 jobs that have been lost over the last few years are just the beginning.
