An appreciation of the best gangster films of all time and discovering some hidden underrated gems.

As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster.

Goodfellas

This is when I first discovered God, he was a small italian man with thick glasses but the hoods called him; Marty. :oldrazz:

Goodfellas is a masterpiece!

King of New York

A nickel bag gets sold in the park, I want in. You guys got fat while everybody starved on the street. Now it's my turn.

Leone's ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA, which you don't hear talked about all that much these days. [YT]QgahiqYovbY[/YT]

Watched The Public Enemy last week. Really want to see Black Mass.

The French Connection starring Gene Hackman is a good one.

The Untouchables is a good one too.

Eastern Promises directed by David Cronenberg. Fantastic film, with one of my favorite Viggo Mortensen performances.

Sexy Beasts with one of Sir Ben Kingsley's best performances.

Goodfellas, Casino, The Godfather, Angles with Dirty Faces, American Gangster, A Bronx Tale, The Departed, and New Jack City are some of my favorites.

Do we count Ichi the Killer as a gangster movie?

I enjoyed the Shinjuku Incident starring Jackie Chan

Wow, I am surprised that the first film listed wasn't The Dark Knight.

:o

One of my favorites is -

Dillinger (1973) wrote and directed by John Millius

Starring Warren Oates, Ben Johnson, Richard Dreyfuss, Geoffrey Lewis, Michelle Phillips, Cloris Leachman, Harry Dean Stanton, and Steve Kanaly.

Scarface count? I know the originally 30's one would.

I would add Running Scared. Not as mob-centric, but an underrated Paul Walker film.

Trailer: The movie is a lot darker than the trailer makes it look.

Am I the only one who finds Godfather II overrated? It's good, but hardly as good as the first.

Always wanted to see this one, what a cast.

Since we're running through Scorsese's catalog lets start with:

The Departed.

Gangster Squad is another gangster picture that I feel is underrated but how about The Untouchables or even Pulp Fiction for Christ sake, Pulp Fiction is a gangster film masterpiece really when you think about it by Tarantino

New Jack City is another gangster picture that is also underrated

Gangster Squad isn't really a gangster movie though. And Pulp Fiction is about gangsters but I dunno if I'd call it a gangster movie

Goodfellas is my all time fav gangsta flick

Miller's Crossing is another gangster movie or even Snatch or Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

The all time favorite gangster movie...Scarface (1983) Tony Montana, Al Pacino now that is a classic

Get Carter (1971) or even Get Carter (2000) the remake with Stallone now that was a gangster film

A History of Violence (2005) with Viggo Mortensen could also be considered a gangster movie

Or even American Gangster with Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe is another one that is underrated
