‘Hart to Hart’ Remake With Gay Couple Set At NBC; Carol Mendelsohn Producing
by Nellie Andreeva

EXCLUSIVE: The Harts are back with a twist. NBC has put in development a new take on the 1979 ABC mystery/adventure drama, which starred Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers. The reboot — which centers on a gay couple — hails from producer Carol Mendelsohn and Sony TV, whose predecessor Columbia Pictures produced the original series with Spelling-Goldebrg Prods.

Written by Christopher Fife (Revenge, Private Practice), based on the Sidney Sheldon-created original, the new Hart To Hart is described as a modern and sexy retelling of the classic series that focuses on “by the book” attorney Jonathan Hart and free-spirited investigator Dan Hartman, who must balance the two sides of their life: action-packed crime-solving in the midst of newly found domesticity. The project, which has received a script commitment plus penalty after interest from multiple networks, is executive produced by Fife and Carol Mendelsohn Prods.’ Mendelsohn and Julie Weitz.

Executive produced by top producers Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg, the original Hart To Hart starred Wagner and Powers as Jonathan and Jennifer Hart, a wealthy couple leading a glamorous jetset lifestyle who regularly stumbled upon murders they proceeded to solve. (This is the show’s opening sequence, which sets up the premise.) The series had a five-season run on ABC, followed by eight TV movies.

This is the second sale for Carol Mendelsohn Prods. this broadcast pitch season through the company’s overall deal at Sony TV. The company also has The Jury, a drama at ABC written by VJ Boyd and Mark Bianculli, which has a big penalty attached to it.

Mendelsohn and Fife are repped by WME.
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaas make the One Million Moms choke on their own rage and do a lesbian Magnum PI too.

Dammit Sawyer, you were supposed to consult me first before selling our autobiography's rights! :argh:

But yah, it'll be cancelled after three episodes, but why not try it. It's hardly the most iconic TV show to reboot like this. The title of this thread alone is a win.

I was going to disagree with you because of Constantine and Hannibal, but they've also kept Aquarius and The Mysteries of Laura, so... I guess we'll see.

Everyone would've thought that it would be the male/female duo so....

wow... how original...

Just like that comment posted on a board talking about characters anywhere from 50-80 years old and the endless string of adaptations, sequels and reboots based on them.

I loved Hart to Hart, not sure I'll watch this though. It's only because I don't watch network TV, but maybe they should have considered Simon & Simon. They were brothers, but I could see that being more of a gay duo.

I have no problem with the gay aspect, or even it being a reboot of Hart to Hart but it sounds so much like a bad mash up with Dharma and Greg or the Odd Couple, or any number of shows in the past where one half is the "straight-laced serious" type and the other is the "free spirited, loose and wild" half.

Maybe they could be a bit like normal, average people instead?

Though this is NBC and thus broadcast television so I probably am asking too much if they could manage to make them not so cliched in every other way possible.

Hopefully soon there's a "The Birdcage" remake with a heterosexual couple.

I wonder if the names are coincidental: John Hart is the fictional timecop from Torchwood who is bisexual, and Dan Hartman is the real-life gay songwriter from the disco era.

Did not know Hartman was gay, liked some of his songs but not him enough to take any interest in his personal life.

I'm sure it was at least one some level intentional even if they didn't conciously realize it. That is an amazing coincedence otherwise.

That would actually be pretty great...

Before meeting their son's super-liberal future in-laws, a couple decides that they will pretend to be a lesbian couple, with the husband dressing as a woman throughout their visit.

Ok, maybe not great, but at least a trainwreck worth watching (the original is pretty great, though).

It would work better for the woman to dress up like a man.

Next up; Cagney & Lacey, and as a modern twist, this time they are two straight male cops!
That's never been done, right?
LOL! Kidding, they should actually remake that one too, and this time actually make them a couple.

The Heart to Heart remake is actually a real cute idea, hopefully it finds an audience. These guys better have the chemistry and charm of the original couple for it to work.
