In many episodes of the prematurely cancelled Justice League Unlimited, there were key moments when the Leaguers joined forces to fight a common enemy at the same time, demonstrating once again what theyre capable of doing. Its the type of scene that will be brought to life next Thursday, January 18th, on Smallville.
Justice, which is written and directed by Steven S. DeKnight, has Oliver Queen (Justin Hartley) approach Clark Kent with a mission: to stop Lex Luthor once and for all, and to bring down his top secret operation 33.1, which involves Krypton freaks that Lex has been secretly acquiring for quite some time.
Gough talks Justice
It was definitely challenging, executive producer Al Gough offers in an exclusive Geekmonthly.com interview. We started early in the season and booked all of the actors so that we had them lined up.
Those actors hes referring to are all people who have appeared on Smallville in the past, notably Kyle Gallner as Bart Allen (a.k.a. the Flash), Lee Thompson Young as Victor Stone (Cyborg) and Alan Ritchson as Arthur Curry (Aquaman - before Hartley was cast in the role in the spin-off pilot that was widely expected to go to series).
Then it was a matter of crafting a story that was sort of containable; that had one sequence that showed off all of the Justice Leaguers abilities, he says. Its an important milestone for us, and thank God the episode turned out well. The worst would be to get all of these people together and end up with a crummy episode.
More in store for the rest of the season
A few other tidbits about the season that he reveals are the fact that when Lana confesses that she still has feelings for Clark - Put that hair back in your head!!!!! - its the real thing. The love triangle comes back, he laughs. In full force.
Rumors of a Green Arrow spin-off are nothing more than that, although he does acknowledge that the character has added a lot to the show this season. Each season, Gough notes, youre always looking for something to give the show a shot in the arm, and I think the Green Arrow did that in spades. We couldnt be happier with the arc and Justins performance.
The season as a whole, he teases, will culminate with a big finale that will involve 33.1, the Justice League in the form of Oliver Queen and getting the phantoms who escaped back into the Phantom Zone.
