It's also "I love you" in sign language. Pull the thumb in to meet the middle/ring fingers, and it becomes "Hook 'em Horns", the University of Texas hand gesture. They were both around long before Gene.

I didn't say he invented it, just that he's not doing the traditional devil horns or trying to.
