You can say safe and sterile, but for Lucasfilm, the results have been sterling. Force Awakens and Rogue One both received overall fantastic reviews, tons of money.

And that's what I'm saying...this feels like more of a clean up job, at least in terms of publicity. This feels almost like a PR move. "Don't worry, shareholders...Ron Howard's got this!".

For instance, JUSTICE LEAGUE has Joss Whedon. That's likely as much for PR as it is for practicality of the actual reshoots and editing process. This feels like a similar publicity move by the studio, though the circumstances appear to be different.

I like Lord and Miller but Howards best movies are better than anything Lord and Miller have done.

Problem though is i think Lord and Miller's films have smoked what Ron has been doing lately, with Rush really being the only one that feels like Apollo 13/Beautiful Mind Ron made it since 2006.

It's apples and oranges between the two. It's not really fair to compare. But that's the point. It's so stark but it's enough to show you what they really want.

I do genuinely hope this bombs. LFL need a black eye to remind them doing the same thing ad infinitum will not stand.

If it is bad, I hope it bombs. If it is mediocre/good, I hope it does mediocre numbers. If it is great, I hope it flourishes as it deserves to.

I have no doubt it will probably end up decent. But it wont be fresh.

And this is why I am rather annoyed with the loss of Lord and Miller. Because I feel like no matter what, this was going to be honest to God different.

It's LFL's favourite flavour after all.

Is Rian vanilla? I think Colin is their most vanilla choice. The others were less vanilla, just bad choices outside of Lord and Miller. I know we disagree on JJ.

Trevorrow is the only film maker so far I dislike. I even think Ron Howard would've been a fine choice for his own full spin off and a far superior choice than Colin to do IX. I don't consider JJ vanilla, his other films may be safe blockbuster fodder, but they're exceptional safe blockbuster fodder (Barring STID), with TFA he made an incredibly vanilla film. Hell, I'm not even sure if it was LFL dogma, or simply having no choice but to meet a deadline.

I don't find TFA vanilla, but I do find how they got there was probably deadline heavy. And that deadline was a Bob Iger/Disney thing. Especially once they made the decision to take Luke out of the film. Which is why it seems a lot of the ideas are popping up in TLJ.

I really like J.J. because his biggest strength is what I tend to care the most about watching a film. That being he creates characters you want to watch. He seems to be really good at working with actors I think usually whatever flaws a movie has tend to get overlooked if you are into the characters. I think that's why Marvel and superhero films in general can have the same plot beats sometimes and get away with it..

There are two scenes in TFA that make me cringe. I don't like them, and they are a problem for me. There are also other little things that I feel like they could improve very easily with small tweaks.

But I thoroughly enjoy 99% of the flick and it is because I really like hanging out with these characters. I genuinely enjoy spending time with them, the way I do Luke, Vader, Obi-Wan, Han, Leia, and Yoda in the OT. And for me that is rare.

I also think this is why I maybe a bit more down on Rogue One now. On the flip side, it was why I was so excited about Lord and Miller. Because I love their characters.

This is exactly where I am. Granted, I'm among those who don't want a young Han Solo film in the first place, but it's not like I don't plan on seeing it. Lucasfilm has committed to making this movie, so I want it to be the best it can be. Rogue One taught me that no matter what happens between day one of shooting and the release date, the most important thing is the finished product.
