Well he just needs to work on making his VFX more "realistic".
And by that i'm not talking about realism in terms of animation , but realism in terms of story. That's where he has problems. If he can work on that , then he can really be a great director as he once was.

Didn't he say that post-SW , he wanted to make a movie about fighter pilots in WW2. I'd be very interested to see just what he how his VFX can hold up in the real world. Does he still suffer from the prequel syndrome ( storywriting , getting the right performance , making good VFX) or has he matured.

Oh and btw , what's so bad about updating you're movie just because it's not what you wanted it to be back in the old days.
It's not that he's wrong in updating ANH , ESB and ROTJ , he's wrong in inserting pointless little things that serve nothing to the story.
