According to Fox news anyway. It's now going to be "Global Intergrated Joint Operating Entity." :-)whatever: ) Could be an old script for all I know though.

The popular all-American comic-book military man and action figure dating back to the 1940s is undergoing a significant transformation for the Paramount Pictures-distributed "G.I. Joe" film, which begins production in February and is scheduled for release in summer 2009.
No longer will G.I. Joe be a U.S. Special Forces soldier, the "Real American Hero" who, in his glory days, single-handedly won World War II.
In the politically correct new millennium, G.I. Joe bears no resemblance to the original.
Paramount has confirmed that in the movie, the name G.I. Joe will become an acronym for "Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity" — an international, coed task force charged with defeating bad guys. It will no longer stand for government issued, as in issued by the American government.
The studio won't elaborate, saying filming hasn't begun and details are still in the works, but the behind-the-scenes rumblings are that the producers have decided to change the nature of G.I. Joe in order to appeal to a wider, more international audience.
/**/
The word is that in the current political climate, they're afraid that a heroic U.S. soldier won't fly.
Joe's transformation, however, isn't sitting well with diehard fans and military types.
"I find it outrageous that they'd want to drop everything American" from the character, said conservative blogger Warner Todd Huston, who wrote about the rumors this week on Newsbusters.org and his own blog. "That's nuts."
Retired Army Col. David W. Hunt, a FOX News military and terrorism analyst, called the scheme to make a whole new Joe "a shame."
"G.I. Joe is a U.S. guy," Hunt said. "What are we going to call it — Global Joe? International Joe? It's kind of stupid. It's ridiculous that they're doing that."
Paramount wouldn't say whether an American would be part of the new "global entity," nor would it offer specifics about the storyline or the characters.
"It is too early to tell about plots. We just don't know that," Jessica Rovins, a marketing executive at Paramount, told FOXNews.com.
But she did confirm the accuracy of an article that ran in the film trade publication Variety, which reported last week that G.I. Joe the soldier is being transformed into G.I.J.O.E. the task force.
A Navy spokeswoman said the studio and film's writers have already approached people at the Pentagon for input.
"They had talked about what would be the best way forward, but without seeing a treatment we don’t know yet which way it’s going to go," Lt. Stephanie Murdock, a project officer in the Navy Office of Information West, told FOXNews.com. "We're definitely open to assisting them when they get around to asking us."
But with no script in hand, she said, it's hard to gauge how the military feels about the characterization of G.I. Joe.
The comic-book character and toy line have already undergone an evolution of sorts since Joe first won the hearts of American little boys — and some little girls — beginning in 1942 with the comic strip and in the early 1960s with the action figure.
In the 1940s, he debuted as a comic-book hero in a strip that ran in U.S. military magazines during World War II.
In the 1960s, G.I. Joe was a burly U.S. Special Forces soldier, the "Real American Hero" of both comic book and action figure fame. The doll had various versions and counterparts of different races and ethnicities, but he was clearly an American male soldier.
In the post-Vietnam War era in the 1970s, Hasbro decided to downplay G.I. Joe's military theme by renaming the line "The Adventures of G.I. Joe" and recasting Joe as the leader of an adventure team charged with espionage missions and fighting evil.
But in the 1980s, the toy company Hasbro made G.I. Joe more of a superhero and added a host of other action figures, expanding the line to include characters that made up a team of international operatives.
Now some critics say the globalization of G.I. Joe has gone too far.
"G.I. Joe is not an international hero. That's crap," said Col. Hunt. "They don't have to water it down. That doesn't make sense."
For blogger Huston, who played with G.I. Joe as a boy, transforming the entire character into an amorphous task force in the movie feels like a hit to his childhood memories.
"I certainly understand that it's for international audiences, but these things are American icons," he said. "Why even pretend it's G.I. Joe then? I am a little bit upset about the whole thing."
Huston believes it's the latest example of Hollywood's hostility toward all things American, and he said he probably won't go to see the film if the existing plans are executed.
"It's the last spit in the face of our military," Huston said. "The doll was G.I. Joe, the government-issued guy who was a hero and American. It was celebrating this one heroic soldier. They want to take even that away."
But in order to be a true success these days, a film has to play well to foreign markets as well as stateside in everything from box-office to DVD sales.
For some citizens of other countries — where sentiments against the Iraq war and the American government are strong — a U.S. soldier might not be the easiest character to get viewers to identify with.
Paramount's Rob Moore, a high-level marketing executive, recently told AdAge.com that it was too soon to know what the global response would be to the film.
"Until there's a [locked] script, I don't think you can really comment on what the international reaction will be," he said. "There are parts of the world where [the negative perception of the American government] is an issue, like Western Europe, and parts where it isn't, like the U.K., Australia and Asia."
Hasbro, the maker of the G.I. Joe action figure line, declined to comment about what's in store for its line of G.I. Joe toys and action figures.
But the toy company's chief operating officer, Brian Goldner, has previously spoken to the media about plans for the movie and brand.
"There are always challenges ... G.I. Joe is not just a brand that represents the military, it also represents great characters," he told AdAge.com. "We'll weigh our options. Clearly we do a lot of work on consumer insight."
The film will be directed by Stephen Sommers, produced by Di Bonaventura Films — which just did the highly successful "Transformers" movie — and written by Stuart Beattie and Skip Woods.

The excuse from the execs about 'not having a treatment yet' shows they are running backwards through a cornfield on this one. They are doing a lazy, half-assed, get-rich-quick version of G.I. Joe and quite frankly I am tired of it.

WHY DO THEY GET TO PRODUCE CRAP WHEN EVERYONE ELSE GETS PICKED APART FOR FAR LESS ERROR AND MISTAKE??? I DON'T CARE HOW NICE THEY ARE ON THE SURFACE, ALLOWING PEOPLE LIKE THAT TO PRODUCE GARBAGE LIKE THAT IS A GROSS ERROR ON THE ACCOUNT OF AMERICA AND MANKIND IN GENERAL. AND I DON'T MEAN FINANCIALLY EITHER. IF THE PLAYING FIELD IS NOT LEVELED THEN THE OUTCOME WILL ALWAYS BE THE SAME - WE ALL DIE.

THOSE MORONS ARE JUST TWO DAMN STUPID TO COMPREHEND SO, AS USUAL, THEY WILL DISMISS ANYTHING WITH SUBSTANCE AS FLUFF AND CONTINUE TAKING THE STUPIDEST PATH AVAILABLE.

WHY THE F*** WOULD ANYONE FOLLOW AND AGREE TO ANYTHING THAT PROMISES DEATH!?!?! HOW G******ED SCARED ARE THEY TO NOT EVEN CONSIDER THE PROSPECT THAT THEY HAVEN'T BEEN TOLD HOW NOT TO DIE!?!?! AND WHY HAVEN'T WE BEEN TOLD??? BECAUSE WE ALL WANT TO WIN, INCLUDING THE PERSON OR PERSONS WHO ARE HOLDING THAT CARD. WE SHOULD ALL CONCEDE TO ANYONE WHO HAS THE
BA!!S TO SPEAK IN SUCH AN UNCONVENTIONAL MANNER, BUT... SOME OF US JUST CAN'T ACCEPT THE TRUTH BECAUSE IT COMES FROM THE PERSON WE HATE MOST - BIG BROTHER(BECAUSE HE'S ALWAYS WATCHING US.)

I'VE PROBABLY BLOWN A FEW OF THEIR MINDS CLEAR INTO OUTER SPACE WITH THAT ONE SO I'LL STOP NOW, FOR THE BABIES OUT THERE.

this is lame news . boo to you hollywood. for shame

a heroic american soldier won't fly? that's one of the most ridiculous things i've heard from a studio, an AMERICAN studio for christ sake. do americans finally hate their own country so much that they can't even concieve of the country being good or heroic? f**k this world, man.

Consider that these days any film can make 50% or more if it's total box office (like Transformers and all 3 Spider-man's did) outside the US. Now consider that these days a movie full of Yankee flag waving BS is going to turn off non-US viewers. So if they stayed totally true to the RAH cartoon concept they run the risk of loosing hundreds of millions in box office. Which they are NOT going to do.

It being a global task force doesn't bother me. Well at least as long as Shipwrek is in it it doesn't bother me.

The Spider-Man movies had plenty of gratuitous flag waving, and they got away with it by simply removing those shots from the international version. Who's to say GI Joe can't have a money shot of old glory in there just for the US version of the film?

Yeah but there talking about changing it from a US military force with some non-US members to a UN/NATO type force where there are some US members and some non US members.

What I'm hoping for is a GI Joe team full of Asians, Russians, South Americans, Africans and a group of very sassy girls.
I guess one American or two would be fine.

That's just funny to me. GIJoe is an American concept about military soldiers fighting enemies on their soil and abroad. I guess these whiny non-US viewers who are turned off by the sight of an American flag fail to grasp the reality that flags are an important part of the military, as with ANY country.

Why would they want to see a movie based on a cartoon that features plenty of flag-waving? It's an AMERICAN MADE MOVIE based on AMERICAN SOLDIERS, so who cares what these non-US viewers think? Tell them to make their own movies and quit whining about ours. I know an accurate adaptation of GIJoe to the bigscreen is just a dream now, with the greedy executives in control, but I get tired of hearing all of these moaners coming out to cry when an American war movie comes out.

Awesome the death of G.I. Joe :( I think they are better off NOT doing something that is basically all American based because in the end EVERYONE will be pissed off about something & if they do it this way well the Americans will be pissed off & they wont be able to use the cool theme song cause it says All American Soldier in it :(

International criers make me sick.

"Oh no, an American movie has an American flag! Shame on you! Shame on you filthy stupid arrogant Americans! Don't you know we, outside of America, can only have our flags in films?! Godzilla is Japanese- Superman is not just America, it's truth justice and all the rest of that stuff! GI Joe is not America, it's everyone! All your American properties are now everyone, you have no properties. lol."

Not meaning to offend anyone, just those that act in the manner I described above. Check IMDB, you'll be sure to find alot of those idiots running around.

I seriously hope that in the next movie, Superman looks at the screen and says: "I stand for truth, justice, and the AMERICAN WAY."

True, but it was neither the focus of the movie nor part of the marketing/advertising campaign. Just because a movie which has an American flag is well received, it doesn't mean that a movie focused on gratuitous flag waving will work, either in the U.S. or outside.

Like it or not, American films dominate and are played heavily internationally. Thus, these movies have to adhere to more limitations due to this larger, wider and more diverse audience. Japanese movies (like most other countries) are made with a smaller audience in mind, that of locals and perhaps those who have emigrated overseas. If it gets aired outside, its normally at a very low distribution and more fluke than design.

Also, whether locally or internationally, a movie that focuses heavily on over-the-top flag-waving is seen as pure American propaganda and thus, many would be turned off by it (would you watch a movie that you thought was Chinese or Russian propaganda?).

Additionally, just because the characters don't come from the U.S. doesn't make them unpatriotic. To me, patriotism is the show of love and devotion to one's country and that is precisely what they are displaying by risking their lives to fight against Cobra to protect their respective homes and the rest of the world. This would in fact highlight that even though we come from different backgrounds, some values (such as courage, patriotism, etc) remain the same regardless of where we come.

I remember quite a few very succesful movies having HEAVY pro-America overtones AND undertones.

It's not really fair to compare Transformers success overseas to G.I. J.O.E. potential success if altered drastically. Transformers was foreign to begin with AND had groundbreaking special effects and c.g.i..

THAT'S WHAT PEOPLE WANT TO SEE!!! SOMETHING WITH THE GUTS TO BE ORIGINAL AND GROUNDBREAKING, MAYBE EVEN EARTH SHATTERING. NO ONE WANTS SOME PUNK-:cmad:SSES, KISS-:cmad:SS ATTEMPT AT MAKING MONEY AND BUYING HAPPINESS!

People cannot simply be controlled with a movie(s) which means that there is no sense in making a G.I. Joe movie into a G.I. J.O.E. movie. Seriously, there is way too much focus being placed upon the name G.I. Joe.

First it was...

Snake Eyes issues...
Then Cobra issues...
Then G.I. Joe/G.I. J.O.E. issues ...

To end THSI issue over the name or title of this project I'll say this...

If anything in a script/story/title should be changed to solely increase viewership and revenue it is the title. If you can't change the title and make significantly more money then you can't do a damn thing to make it any better.

TRANSLATION: Would more people be intrested in a movie called Action Man or one called G.I Joe??? Probably the one who has been making more money all along would be the sensible choice.

BUT... I see nothing wrong with having the organizations name be an abbreviation of sorts for the five words that make up the orginizations name - C.O.B.R.A. = Commbative Operation: Beasts Rebel Against...

...of course that is only the name for the select few leaders of the group.
Publicly they are simpley known as the scourge of the earth - Cobra.

G.I. Joe is really a name I could see being used only a handful of times in the potential film franchise. Basically only in training exercises and boot camps, kind of an inside thing to the actuall members. Perhaps it could later be made to have significant meaning but not right now.

We all know G.I. Joe is the only title for this. And, at least I know, that it could severly F.U.B.A.R. the entire thing. For the movie, title, and phrase - G.I. Joe - to have meaning and be deep and NOT be a piece of garbage they have to be connected.

The first G.I. Joe movie, the title, and the phrase ALL have to be on the same page as far as what they are putting forward.

1.) This project MUST be a bit more on the dark and realistic side(Apocalypse Now) than the light and surreal side(Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory.) G.I. Joe is really an ideal way to incorporate both aspects into one film like never before. If done to perfection it could be the greatest cinematical achievement. The reason for the darkness: No one should EVER:cmad: make a lighthearted movie of human beings gladly being referred to as Government Issued property. THAT IS JUST AS DEMEANING AS SLAVERY!:cmad:

2.) G.I. Joe or G.I. J.O.E., it doesn't matter. Neither should be used much on screen for they are supposed to be top secret.

3.) Should G.I. Joe be more of a person or an organization/operation as a whole??? Making it the organization/operation would be a helluva lot easier to explain... but it can still end up being the sad realistic truth as to what happens to the the best America had to offer. The stories of the six men and woman who were the ONLY 100% Real American Heroes, the six
Government Issued's.:csad: That's why we need at least six movies and that's why I argued so hard for part one focusing on Snake Eyes. His story is so good it will have to be told twice.

THE SIX
Snake Eyes(say what you want, he's the hardest to put in but the easiest
to omit which means... HARDCORE MOVIE = SNAKE EYES MOVIE)

Storm Shadow(unquestionably Snake Eyes hardest fight, because it was
the only real one.)

Chukkles(I know it sounds strange but with a name like Chukkles what'd
you expect? Besides, the audience will dig the little secret
Chukkles has and the irony it. Supposedly, he was killed by the
mysterious villain known as Overlord, who is actually a Russian
known as Mikhail Derenko(except to the Joes.)The irony comes in
that dear ole Chukkles is what you may call a worst case victim of
schizophrenia and multiple personalities disorder. His two
confirmed personalities - Chukkles and General Clayton "Hawk"
Abernathy. Undoubtedly the first member of 'The Six" and quite
possibley the craziest and most dangerous person on the planet.
Duke is his right hand man/fall guy and Stalker and Roadblock are
his personal, hand picked bodyguards.)

Action Man(Unfortunately, <<<this goody-goody, dumbass somehow ended
up on the team. Something about 'the manners of America
needing to be kept tabs on.' Hopefully the franchise goes on
long enough to see him killed off, but not forgotten.:cmad: )

So far we have a blonde haired and blue eyed American, an Asian, an Insane Genious with an entourage consisting of the All-American white hero and the two All-American black hero's, and a very annoying
militarized version of Mr. Belvedere.

We could stop there, with 'The Six' and a TBD traitor, but we want this film saga to be some seriously heavy sh**. We NEED the woman and the only true minority.

We know this woman has to be one bad ass beast to roll with these guys. Sorry Cover Girl... Sorry Lady Jaye(R.I.P)... Sorry Scarlett... the female member has to be...

The Baroness(She is the closest mainly because she wants to
kill Snake Eyes for killing her brother.((wink wink))
And for anyone
who says she's a Cobra you need to keep in mind: Amidst
her's and Flint's steamy affair she betrays Cobra and
Flint betrays the Joes. Ironically enough, it is later revealed
that Duke was supposed to be the one in Vietnam and the
first recruit of G.I. Joe, Snake Eyes was merely the back up
plan who gut f****d hard and fast by the government
because he had to learn an important lesson in a short
amount of time. He had to learn it before taking on the most
difficult task the U.S. Government ever issued... The task
was indeed a difficult one. He essentially had to go from
being an angel to the antichrist and then make sure he is the
only one happy about it:dry:. Back to the irony...
Duke did not gain acceptance into the group which
means he was supposed to let go all the perks that went
with it and he did, except for one called Scarlett. The original
plan was for Duke to be the one in Snake EYes position
with Scarlett as his and his alone. Eventually, Scarlett would
leave Duke via death or divorce and leave him grieving.
Baroness was supposed to defect to G.I.Joe and become
Duke's saving grace whom he rode off into the sunset with.
That didn't happen but Duke still wants her, a bit too much.
No one is blaming anyone, basically because it leads to the
Duke-Flint fight which, truely is, the best if you
like that sort of thing. That and it gives us just enough
material for the sixth and final character...)

Spirit(??? The only true minority, an honest to god 100% Native American
known simply as Spirit Iron-Knife. Believe it or not, his only purpose
on the team is to protect Snake Eyes. If Duke had succeeded in his
preperations Spirit would not even be on the team. Sadly, and
unavoidably, Hawk crossed the line and it caused Spirit great pain
and suffering but he did not blame Hawk. For Hawk needed to cross
that line to protect Spirit from the one he was protecting. Snake
Eyes rose up against his protector in ways most can't imagine...
Unbeknownst to Spirit, because it had never happened, Snake Eyes
was putting Spirit's life in serious jeopardy for the first time ever.
Snake Eyes didn't know he was doing it, Spirit didn't know it was
happening, and Hawk didn't know what he was stopping.)

In religous terms:
Spirit is the beast
Hawk is man
Snake Eyes is the antichrist.

In Star Wars terms:
Spirit is the force
Hawk is Obi-Wan
Snake Eyes is Anakin

In X-Men terms
Spirit is Jean Grey
Hawk is Wolverine
Snake Eyes is Cyclops

In Star Trek terms:
Spirit is Spock
Hawk is Bones
Snake Eyes is Kirk

In political terms:
Spirit is Vice-President
Hawk is the First Lady
Snake Eyes is President

In Metal Gear terms:
Spirit is Otacon
Hawk is Metal Gear
Snake Eyes is Snake

This will work on so many levels.

Needless to say, by the end of the sixth movie the Six True Members of the TOP SECRET organization known as G.I. Joe was reduced to 'The Three.' The red the white and the blue mother f***as!!!!
GUESS WHO!!!

ONCE AGAIN, THE SIX MAIN CHARACTERS TO INCLUDE:
1.) SNAKE EYES:The Perennial Favorite(blone haired & blue eyed) as the underdog.

2.) STORM SHADOW: The Asian answer to him.

3.) CHUKKLES/HAWK: The Schizophrenic Dual Personalities guy who is
either the mastermind behind it all or absolutely clueless. As
always; DUKE, STALKER, and ROADBLOCK are by his side.

4.) ACTION MAN: The militarized version of Mr. Belvedere.

5.) BARONESS: Typical woman, trying to kill the good guys first only to
realize she was on the wrong team. Would have killed
herself if not for FLINT, who defected to COBRA while
Baroness defected to G.I. JOE.

6.) SPIRIT: The Native American who is the Shaman for the other five,
specifically Snake Eyes.

I can even put the perfect happy ending on it if you want it, for closure.

Perfect spin-off into the other side of this story or... the end?

**HINT: If you want to at least six more movies before you die,
then you want to see the other side of this story**

I remember quite a few very succesful movies having HEAVY pro-America overtones AND undertones.

Spoken by someone who knows not where Transformers came from. The only "foregin" about were the first few waves of the toys. The IP itself was created by Hasbro, the show was created and written in the US (by Marvel). If out-sourcing the animation to japan makes it foregin than GI-Joe RAH was foregin too. Being animated by the same company and all.

Also, whether locally or internationally, a movie that focuses heavily on over-the-top flag-waving is seen as pure American propaganda and thus, many would be turned off by it (would you watch a movie that you thought was Chinese or Russian propaganda?).

So stupid international idiots going "oh no, Spider-Man lands next to American flag in American city- oh no!" make sense to you?

To some international people ANY sign of the american flag is seen as an offense! Give me a fckin break.

Superman is an AMERICAN HERO. Why did we have to sacrafice "american way"? To please stupid hypicrate foreigners?!

What the fckin hell is next?!!!! CAPTAIN INTERNATIONAL?! :cmad:

NOTE: I am not stating all foreigners, just those who go ape **** over the presence of ANYTHING in a film relating back to America.

By and large, the issue isn't the presence of the United States but rather the absence of everyone else. To make G.I. Joe a specifically American team combating the global threat of Cobra would give the impression that the only (competent) team out there fighting terrorism are Americans. This would be a huge insult and disservice to the thousands of non-Americans out there fighting against terrorism, many of whom have contributed equally if not more to the cause.

Additionally, as I keep saying, please explain how it is that international cooperation reduces the patriotic value of the characters (specifically the American ones)? And how does posing in front of an American flag make anyone more patriotic than those who don't? Alone, and without context, the presence of the American flag alone does not symbolize patriotism in any form.

NOTE: Talking about the nature of how Hollywood is allowing itself to be pushed over by foreigners in general- not specific G.I Joe related. And the disgusting and revolting responses I heard from foreigners regarding an American flag being in an American City in Spider-Man 3. We gave them, "all that stuff" and in return that's what they do! Continue *****ing and groaning until we give in. As said before Supes should look straight at the screen and say "American Way" in the sequel as it should have been and IS. This isn't a reflection on G.I. Joe as much as it is an analysis of some hypocrite foreigners who can't stand the sight of an American flag because for some reason they hate us and can't shut up about how much they hate us.

Well, I find it pretty hilarious that they're taking a brand that's about as "Americanized" as you can get, and turning it inside out. I feel that if they're that afraid of backlash from overseas audiences who hate the U.S. govt. so much that they won't watch a G.I. Joe movie, then they just shouldn't bother making it at all. I mean, it's not going to be an actual G.I. Joe movie, anyway, so they might as well just make something else. Better yet, just wait until somebody else comes along who has the guts to make it what it's supposed to be, and the talent to make it succeed.

It's probably going to be some camped-out POS anyway, so I really could not care.
