Cockroaches creep into Norwegian life
Norway long ago got the dubious distinction of being associated with a rat, but was pretty much free of cockroaches. Now the creepy crawly things are making inroads all over the country. Reidar Mehl, head of the pest unit at the national health institute, tells newspaper Aftenposten that there's been a marked increase in the country's cockroach population since the early 1990s.
The problem, he says, is worst in the larger cities and towns of southern Norway, but the far north is far from immune. "Russian fishing boats, for example, have often brought cockroaches with them that make their way onto land," Mehl told Aftenposten. "These roaches get a foothold in many coastal towns up north." But he attributes most of the new cockroach problem to increased international travel. "We're traveling more than we did earlier, and imports from foreign countries have increased," he said. He cites reported infestations at some asylum centers in Norway that house newly arrived refugees.
Globetrotting Norwegians also can unwittingly bring cockroaches home with them. "The number of cockroaches in Norway is increasing every single year, because they also multiply," said Eilif Lundberg of Anticimex, one of the biggest pest control firms in Norway."We can't just blame foreigners for the problem.".
Might want to check eBay...So, how much do flamethrowers go for these days?
Not going to look that up (the NSA is watchingSo, how much do flamethrowers go for these days?
Slushy, stop making sense and having people calm down in a thread meant to scare and freak them out. You'll get bad karma
This is news? I thought this was fairly common. This happened to my mom. A pregnant cockroach burrowed into her ear while she was sleeping and she went to the hospital in the middle of the night with terrible pain. The doctor took it out by splashing it with vinnegar and pulling it out with tweezers piece by piece.
Heh...no way you really thought that was common.
...too easy. *Walks away*Well, common enough that it happened to my mom. *shrug*
